Author of pole position at Assen in 2012 and 2013 but beaten by his teammate Loris Baz last year, Tom Sykes is back on the first place of the Dutch grid. The n ° 66 signs his 25th Superpole in WSBK, his first of the 2015 season.
This afternoon, "Major Tom" took down the Superpole by completing the 4542m of the Assen circuit in 1’34.789. The official Kawasaki rider therefore does not break the record of our national Bazooka (1 ‘34.357), but he is delighted to start in the two races this Sunday in front of the first two riders of the provisional classification..
Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team) and Leon Haslam (Aprilia Red Devils) complete this new 100% British front row (!). Leader Johnny fails less than two tenths of a second from n ° 66, but on Sunday on race tires, the difference should be smaller … or even reversed. ?
Second fastest time at the end of the three free sessions, the dolphin Haslam (26 points behind Rea in the championship) will also ride for the win tomorrow, provided of course that the temperatures are not too cold for his hot RSV4.
The only other rider to win this season – in the second Superbike race in Aragon – Chaz Davies (Ducati Aruba.it) was ahead of his opponents on his last lap, but he lost four tenths of a second while widening in the ninth corner and finally finished fourth.
Behind the Panigale n ° 7 will be installed the favorite Superbike of the Dutch public: the Fireblade n ° 60 of Van den Mark, their reigning Supersport world champion! "Magic" Michael had to apply himself to achieve an incredible lap of the Assen circuit on his Honda more bouncing than the Kawasaki, Aprilia or Ducati of his rivals.
Alex Lowes (Suzuki Voltcom Crescent) does not deserve either: the No.22 had to spit in the gloves to lead his GSX-R1000 – which underwent a Magneti Marelli ECU transplant last week and is not yet in great shape – on the last place of the 2nd row.
Ninth on the grid, Sylvain Guintoli has come a long way! Best time in Superpole 1 on race tires, he was only third once the qualifying tires were put on, a few seconds before the end of the first qualifying session….
Our sacred Guinters – sacred in 2014! – managed to cover an extra lap on his soft tire and finish first in SP1. A few minutes later during the final session of the Superpole (SP2), the Frenchie managed to beat Leandro Mercado (Ducati Barni), Leon Camier (MV Agusta) and Nico Terol (Ducati Althea).
On the other hand, the two new Spanish stars of the World SBK, Jordi Torres (on the second Aprilia Red Devils) and Xavi Fores (on Giugliano’s factory Ducati) managed to post better times than our reigning world champion and will start in front of him on the 3rd line.
Second in SP1 before the brilliant lap and surprise of our "Number One", Matteo Baiocco was deprived of SP2 and had to be satisfied with 13th place on the Dutch grid. The n ° 15 of the Ducati Althea team will be ahead of Ayrton Badovini (BMW Italia) and Roman Ramos (Kawasaki Go Eleven).
Our two other French representatives Randy de Puniet and Christophe Ponsson will start respectively from 7th and 8th row: behind David Salom (Kawasaki Pedercini) and Nicolo Canepa (EBR Hero) for n ° 14 Suzuki, ahead of Santiago Barragan (Kawasaki Grillini) and Javier Alviz (guest driver at Kawasaki Pedercini) for n ° 23 Kawa ‘.
Larry Pegram (EBR Hero) will start from eighth and last place ahead of the two S1000RRs of the BMW Toth team: the n ° 75 of Gabor Rizmayer and the n ° 10 of Imre Toth. Start of the first race tomorrow at 10:30 am … Stay tuned !
