Deprived of competition following a nasty crash during pre-season testing in Australia, Davide Giugliano signs on his factory Panigale with a Superpole, ahead of his family … and the two official Kawasaki !
Author of the last pole position of the 2014 season in Qatar (read), the Roman rider (Ducati Aruba.it) proved this afternoon in Imola that he has lost nothing of his speed during his six months of absence, completing the 4.936 km of the "Enzo e Dino Ferrari" circuit in 1 ‘46.382.
The track record therefore remains the property of Tom Sykes who had turned in 1 ‘45.981 in 2013. But this year, "Major Tom" did not manage to improve his mark, nor even to beat the time of Davide, first. non-British driver to settle at the head of a starting grid WSBK 2015 … The following four places are however occupied by subjects of his Majesty Charlotte Elizabeth ii.
Englishman Tom Sykes and Northern Irishman Jonathan Rea will accompany Davide on the front row. Sometimes slower than the Roman in qualifying, the two official Ninjas are generally ahead in the race. Unlike tifosis, Lls "bookmakers" will bet more on n ° 66 and 65 than on n ° 34…
Giugliano’s team-mate, the Welshman Chaz Davies, will start tomorrow from fourth place on the Italian starting grid with the firm intention of hoisting his 1199 Panigale on the podium. British fourth, Leon Haslam in his RSV4, will aim for the same goal.
Second in the general classification, 50 points behind Jonathan Rea, the No. 91 of the Aprilia Red Devils team will however have to be wary of his own teammate Jordi Torres. The "Spanish Elvis" will complete the second row and try to reach his first podium in World Superbike.
The third row is dominated by two rather unexpected riders who make the public happy: the Argentinian Leandro Mercado on a fifth Italian machine (private Panigale of the Ducati Barni team) and the Italian Ayrton Badovini on his S1000RR … entered by BMW Italia !
Michael Van Den Mark completes the third row. On the podium during his two home races three weeks ago (read our), the Supersport world champion will have to get off to a very good start at the controls of his Fireblade (Honda Pata) then spit in the gloves to hang the lead car this Sunday.
The Spaniard David Salom (Kawasaki Pedercini) completed the Top 10 of the final phase of the Superpole "SP2" and Alex Lowes (Suzuki Voltcom Crescent) took the 11th fastest time. Drafted in SP1, Leon Camier was unfortunately unable to participate in SP2 (MV Agusta broken down …) and must be satisfied with the 12th position.
Our reigning world champion Sylvain Guintoli was unable to pass the Superpole 1 milestone and will start from 15th place on the grid, behind the two Ducati Althea riders: the holder Matteo Baiocco (14th) and the replacement for Nico Terol , Michel Fabrizio (13th).
Randy de Puniet on the second GSX-R1000 on the grid will start from a distant 17th place, between Roman Ramos (Kawasaki Go Eleven) and Santiago Barragan (Kawasaki Grillini). Our third representative Christophe Ponsson will start from 19th place, ahead of his old Kawasaki Pedercini, now driven by Niccolo Canepa. The two BMW Toths bring up the rear.
See you tomorrow to follow the two World Superbike races (departures at 10:30 am then 1:10 pm) and the Supersport race (start at 11:40 am) almost live, on the Site of course: stay tuned !
