WSBK 2013: BMW Motorrad partially delegates to Italians
BMW Motorrad has good news and bad news … but it’s the same: next year, the factory S1000RRs will still be on the Mondial Superbike grid, except that they will be managed by the current second team , BMW Italia. Explanations…
After the announcements of the withdrawal of the official Ducati team in 2010, then that of Yamaha last year (read and), the press release entitled "BMW Motorrad readjusts its sporting activities: the commitment to the 2013 World Superbike Championship"could lead to fear the application of the adage"never two without three"…
Ultimately, it’s only a partial withdrawal: "BMW Motorrad Italia will take charge of the factory and test team as well as the development of the chassis", while "BMW in Munich will be responsible for the development of the engine and electronics part".
On the one hand – the good one – this means that the two factory S1000RRs will still be part of the World Superbike field in 2013, but on the other – worse – than those of the Italian team driven this year by Fabrizio and Badovini will no longer be at the start next year.
Indeed, "the focus of the new structure on a single team is clear and efficient, the concept is legitimate and logical", describe without qualms the German officials…
Chassis in Milan, engine in Munich
The only driver to have led the Munich bombshell to victory, vice-world champion Marco Melandri can be confident about his commitment to this "new" team in 2013. On the other hand, his compatriots – so duplicates? – Fabrizio and Badovini tremble more…

"The name of the team, the composition of its management team and its drivers for 2013 will be revealed later.", warns the propeller firm, currently third in the constructors’ standings (242 points) behind the Italians Ducati (247.5) and Aprilia (266), but ahead of the three Japanese !
"The Superbike World Championship will remain a good medium for BMW Motorrad next year (what about 2014, Editor’s note?) in order to demonstrate our expertise as a manufacturer of sports motorcycles in direct contact with consumers"says BMW Motorrad boss Stephan Shaller.
The German big boss takes the opportunity to congratulate Bernhard Gobmeier, sporting director of the sports branch of BMW "motorcycle", "who successfully restructured BMW Motorrad Motorsport and achieved the first WSBK victories".
Next year, the management of the official BMW team will be entrusted to Andrea Buzzoni, currently head of the BMW Italia team. Both proud and grateful, the Transalpine is already eager to get to work: "the S1000RR is capable of winning in WSBK. This is the accomplishment of Bernhard Gobmeier and his team. We will use this database in 2013".
