WSBK: Checa and Davies, 2011 world champions !

It is with panache – understand "with a new double" – that Carlos Checa became world Superbike champion this Sunday at Magny-Cours. In Supersport, Chaz Davies only finished 6th in the race but also won his first world title, well deserved…
First Superbike race
Eugene Laverty goes like a ball from his second place on the grid, while Rea is completely missing! The Irishman is just ahead of Leon Camier and Carlos Checa. In the background, Mark Aitchison is thrown into the air in an impressive highside … The Australian luckily gets up on his own.
Very incisive, Tom Sykes takes his 3rd place from Carlos who finds himself ahead of Sylvain Guintoli, Marco Melandri, Jonathan Rea and Noriyuki Haga.
From the first laps, Laverty tried to escape on the handlebars of his R1 but Camier and his RSV4 followed him. Seeing the Yamaha pull away, Checa climbs up on Aprilia n ° 2 to the point of touching it at the exit of Adelaide !
El Toro n ° 7 moved to 2nd position one lap later with the same braking from Adelaide. Sylvain Guintoli confirms that the Ducatis are going strong at the start of the race and overtake Sykes a few turns later. The Frenchie is then in 4th position.
His teammate Jakub Smrz is less fortunate: he loses the front, feels asphalt and has to abandon his first race. Maxime Berger, on the fourth 1098 of the field, fights to enter the Top 10. Johnny Rea experiences the same disillusion, victim of a "lowside" in the chicane which controls the straight line of the pits…
At the aspiration of the Kawasaki n ° 66, the Yamaha n ° 33 heckles its pilot, but the Italian does not give up his hand and negotiates the Golf break thoroughly, like everyone else! Marco even tries to brake on Tom but loses his footing and gets passed in quick succession by Rea and Haga.
At the forefront, Checa easily catches Laverty: the Catalan turns half a second faster on three laps in a row! Carlos then chooses to delay, Leon Camier being almost three seconds behind the leading duo.
After being overtaken from the outside by Corser (!), Melandri regained his 8th place immediately. The battle continues against Sykes, who ends up doing a straight ahead and wisely joins the race behind the official Yamaha..
Maxime Berger is in 12th place and is three seconds behind Fabrizio 11th on the 8th lap. The Italian and the Suz bring up the rear of the peloton where Haga stands out in times slightly lower than those of his little comrades.
It was in the 9th lap that Checa launched Laverty’s first braking attack. The Spaniard passes in front of the Yamaha n ° 58 but misses the point and must let the Irishman pass again. At the top of the circuit at Water Tower, the Spaniard transforms his test and launches the assault !
On the next lap, Haslam took 4th place in our national Guintoli in Adelaide. The Frenchman remains focused: he has an interest because Haga is in his basques! Melandri is however even more aggressive and doubles Nitro Nori…
At halfway, Carlos Checa leads with two seconds ahead of Eugene Laverty and rolls one second faster than n ° 58! Leon Camier occupies the 3rd position but is threatened by Leon Haslam … The BMW driver also overtakes Aprilia on the 13th lap.
Sylvain Guintoli, 5th, must be wary of Melandri, more and more at ease on this new circuit – "new" for him in any case. Ten laps from the checkered flag, Marco overtakes Sylvain under Adelaide’s braking.
The battle for 9th place is just as hectic! Corser has to endure the pressure from Sykes, Lascorz and Fabrizio. The old Croco still holds the shape and keeps out of reach.
The young Maxime Berger, no less sharp, must again join the pits. Hopefully the repeated troubles with his 1098 won’t prevent him from getting some good handlebars for next year. The little Dijonnais deserves to pursue his career at the highest level !
True to his good habits, Melandri finished the race at full speed. Marco gets rid of Leon Camier in the 16th lap and now targets Leon Haslam on the third step of the podium.
Six laps from the end, Michel Fabrizio fell and tried to start again, without success. Like Honda Castrol, Alstare Suzuki’s black series continues.
As Checa glides towards victory and the world title, Laverty paddles to keep Haslam at bay. But Eugene does not know it, but Leon does not arrive alone: Melandri also wants to be on the podium, and Camier is only a second away !
While he thought he could overtake Laverty, Haslam slightly missed Adelaide’s braking and lost his 4th place to Melandri. The two Yamaha are now on the podium but the BMW remains in contact.
Just before starting the penultimate lap, Marco passes in front of his teammate and climbs to the second step of the podium. A great performance from the "rookie" Yamaha, but which will not prevent the coronation – the first for a Spaniard – of Carlos Checa !
Leon Haslam tries his luck again in Adelaide and this time manages to overtake Eugene Laverty! Leon Camier immediately imitates his compatriot and relegates n ° 58 to 5th position.
All the while, alone on the track, Carlos relishes the last moments that separate him from his 13th victory and, above all, his first world title. The Spaniard celebrates this double success for a long time: winner in France, he is now "World Champion".
Supersport Race
The front row riders got off to a good start: Luca Scassa took the first turn in the lead but the Yamaha rider was surprised by Broc Parkes and Massimo Roccoli. The Italian however recovers his 2nd place in the Water Tower.
On the French side, Fabien Foret occupies 7th place, behind James Ellison and the leader of the world championship Chaz Davies! Florian Marino is 11th, Louis Bulle from Dark Dog Academy is 13th.
As is often the case, Roccoli is boiling hot and doesn’t release an ounce of pressure on Scassa. Massimo overtakes his compatriot again on the 2nd lap and tries to pick up Parkes who isolated himself just a second from the peloton.
Chaz Davies goes on the attack and overtakes Sam Lowes. A few moments later, the Kawa ‘n ° 55 lets out a thick blue cloud! Luckily, Roccoli quickly realizes this and puts his broken Ninja away on the side..
The incident allows the ZX-6R to lead – in great shape this one! – to accumulate a lead of more than two seconds in the 4th loop. Davies, Scassa and Lowes form the hunting party. Two more seconds later, Marino – come from who knows where ?! – ahead of Foret and Salom, who also wears the pretty X-lite helmet in the colors of the brand new WSBK champion, Carlos Checa !
Very fast on the Nivernaise track, Sam Lowes took 3rd place by sliding his Honda under Scassa’s Yamaha in Château d’eau. Visibly at ease, the young Englishman traces paths much tighter than those of Yamaha, lodges in Davies’ asp and surprises him under Adelaide’s braking..
At the same time, another Honda is working very hard: the n ° 99 driven by Foret is the fastest bike on the track and quickly separates from Marino, but does not let go of Salom … The Spaniard even manages to overtake then to distance Fabien in the 8th lap !
Broc Parkes continued to attack and isolated himself in the lead: the Australian was almost three seconds ahead of Sam Lowes on the 9th lap. Lowes takes advantage of a small drop in Davies to give him company.
Glued to the Yam n ° 7 of the probable world champion, his n ° 9 sister is eyeing the podium, unlike the Kawa ‘n ° 44 posted in fifth position, two seconds behind Scassa.
Further still, James Ellison brakes Fabien Foret in Adelaide. Florian Marino helplessly attends the show: the young French rookie of the Ten Kate team is a big second from his attacked teammate.
Halfway through the race, Chaz Davies grabbed a few tenths from Sam Lowes. The leading men are already catching up with the very last: the Russian Pozdneev on his Yamaha n ° 73…
With nine laps to go, Luca Scassa delayed his braking in Adelaide but widened and returned his 3rd place to Chaz Davies. The latter is placed under the pot of the CBR of Lowes: an excellent idea since Sam is gradually going back to Broc Parkes !
Scassa attacks Davies again but this time stays ahead of his teammate on the 16th lap. The Italian instantly gives up on his Welsh teammate – who perhaps thinks of his title above all? – and joins Lowes. In the next lap, Luca overtakes Sam and therefore climbs the second step of the podium..
There are now five laps to go and Parkes is only a big second ahead of the R6 n ° 9 … The Australian gives up half a second in the lap to Scassa, and loses more by turning around to analyze a situation that is nevertheless clear: Scassa is on his tail !
Davies also turns around and realizes that Foret is not there to make an incredible comeback "à la Foret" … For Chaz, the title is guaranteed on condition of staying on its wheels..
Luca Scassa negotiates Estoril much faster than Broc Parkes and steals the reins of the race from him by passing into Golf. The Italian is on the run, looking for a podium that has not received since Monza in early May.
Chaz Davies, on the contrary, is no longer in the race: he turns a full second slower than his opponents and finds himself in 5th place two laps from the end. Sam Lowes climbs to the second step of the podium in the penultimate loop and lets Broc Parkes explain himself with his teammate David Salom…
In front, Luca Scassa drives the point home and forges a lead of more than a second. Sam Lowes rides in 2nd position just ahead of the two official ZX-6Rs of Parkes and Salom, and the Honda of James Ellison…
Chaz Davies may cross the finish line only in 6th position, he nevertheless won a well-deserved first world title, crowned with seven podiums including five victories this season..
Yamaha, on the other hand, is not yet assured of the world title: the brand with three tuning forks is only 12 points ahead of Honda in the provisional standings. Chaz Davies will undoubtedly be keen to offer Yam ‘the world title by winning in Portimao … To follow on Site !
Second Superbike race
Jonathan Rea starts ahead of Eugene Laverty, Leon Camier, Tom Sykes, Carlos Checa, Noriyuki Haga, Leon Haslam, Sylvain Guintoli, Marco Melandri and Troy Corser. From the first lap, Carlos overtakes Tom and settles in 4th position.
The Englishman tries to recover his due by delaying his braking in the water tower behind the Spaniard, slips on the rear wheel of the Ducati n ° 7 and falls! The Kawasaki n ° 66 will not leave: a pity for the show…
Jonathan Rea hides his head under the Fireblade bubble and abandons the peloton led by Laverty and Camier. But Leon is quickly overtaken by the 2011 world champion, while Haga tries to stay in touch, far ahead of Haslam, Guintoli, Melandri and Fabrizio.
For the sixth consecutive time, unfortunately, Michel Fabrizio will not reach the finish line: he loses the front in Adelaide and comes out of the turn on foot…
Suddenly, Checa found himself behind Nitro Nori in 5th place. Fortunately for Checa, in search of his 14th victory this season, Johnny Rea gradually gives back control: Laverty and Camier get back on the Honda n ° 4, dragging in their wake Haga and Checa.
At the same time, Marco Melandri separates from Leon Haslam and Sylvain Guintoli to get back on the hunting party. In the 6th lap, Eugene is up to Jonathan on Adelaide’s braking, but on the outside. He must therefore wait for the exit of the hairpin to take the lead of the race.
Carlos Checa, eager for victory, does it twice before passing Haga again. El Toro stayed within a second of Camier and Rea, but was a big second behind Laverty. Melandri on his side goes up to the level of Haga.
In the 8th lap, Melandri and Haslam pass poor Haga in quick succession: it is not finally this year that Nitro Nori will win his sixth victory at Magny-Cours !
After pretending to isolate himself in the lead, Eugene was joined by Jonathan shortly before halfway. Checa is in ambush while Camier has failed to keep pace with the No.7 Ducati. The n ° 2 Aprilia is also threatened, in the 10th lap, by the famous n ° 33 and his official R1 !
The Italian took 4th place in the descent of the Lycee and is now aiming for the third step of the podium occupied by his great rival Checa. Laverty, who must score the maximum number of points to clinch 3rd place in the provisional – that of Biaggi, again forfeited this weekend – is still in the lead !
Five seconds behind the leader, Sylvain Guintoli has the pace to fight for 4th place but is two seconds behind Haslam (6th). Maxime Berger is traveling 19 seconds from Laverty, accompanied by Rolfo and Fores. N ° 121 is fighting not to finish 14th … and last !
Ten laps from the end of the race, Johnny Rea was the victim of a technical problem on his Honda, as in Imola! No leaks, no smoke, no damaged plastic … A new failure due to an electrical or electronic part at 1 euro for the Honda rider ?!
As if galvanized by Rea’s abandonment, Checa decided to shift overdrive and quickly passed Laverty. WSBK’s Best Driver This Year Irresistibly Moves Away From Second Best Rookie Of The Season – After Ex-GP Star Melandri…
Marco inherited the 3rd place and also separated from his pursuers: Leon Camier and Leon Haslam. Sylvain Guintoli rolls in 6th position, two seconds ahead of two BMW riders – the young Badovini and the old Corser – and a small second behind another S1000RR tamer: Haslam !
In front, "Youdjin" refuses to give up a second behind El Toro: there are only six laps to go and Laverty has not compromised his chances of victory in France. Melandri may well wring the right grip of his R1, he does not grab a tenth from his Irish teammate.
Leon Camier, on the other hand, gradually returns his hand and passes through Haslam. Guintoli climbs back to RSV4 No.2 with four laps of the checkered flag…
In the next loop, Rolfo lost the front end of his Kawasaki Pedercini n ° 44 and allowed Maxime Berger to climb to 12th position. The young Frenchman has lost contact with Javier Fores (replacing retired Toseland) and must now pray that his Ducati will go the distance.
On the other side of the circuit, Melandri maintains an infernal rhythm and is now quickly getting back on his compatriot Laverty! One loop from the end, Marco is in Eugene’s pots … The Italian lodges in the Irishman’s aspi in the not-quite-straight line of Magny-Cours and arises inside Laverty braking Adelaide.
As Carlos Checa wraps around his fifth double of the year, Marco Melandri locks in second place ahead of Eugene Laverty. Leon Haslam finished 4th six seconds behind the winner, Sylvain Guintoli tumbled into 6th place a second later. Maxime Berger brings up the rear, in 12th position.
In the Championship therefore, Carlos Checa takes his lead over Melandri to 107 points! Marco is assured of the "title" of vice-world champion while his teammate Eugene Laverty now overtakes Max Biaggi by two small points.
Will the Roman Emperor be back in Portimao to defend his 3rd place in the 2011 World Drivers’ Championship? At the same time, will he be able to offer Aprilia 2nd place in the constructors’ ranking? Because far behind Ducati (new WSBK champion with 491 points), Yamaha is ahead of Aprilia by only 16 points. Championship to follow: the final is scheduled in two weeks, stay tuned !
