Castrol and motorsports

Created in 1899 by Charles C. Wakefield and bought by the Burmah group in 1966, Castrol is a lubricants manufacturer that operates in the automotive and two-wheeler sectors, but also in aviation, the agricultural world, maritime and rail transport and even the conquest of space.

Historically involved in the biggest mechanical competitions (Indianapolis 500 Miles in 1911, Tourist Trophy in 1959, Formula 1, WRC rallies, Grand Prix and Motorcycle Endurance …), Castrol is a partner of many world champion teams such as Jaguar, Toyota, Volkswagen, Honda or Suzuki.

This partnership between Honda and Castrol is not really a first, since the collaboration between the two brands began in 1959 at the Tourist Trophy (see box opposite). It continued in the 250 cc Grands Prix in the 90s and led to three world titles in World Superbike: John Kocinski in 1997 then Colin Edwards in 2000 and 2002.

"Motorcycle racing provides Castrol with a fundamental environment to test and develop our Power One technology and the Castrol Honda World Superbike Championship team provides a powerful and stimulating platform to demonstrate the performance of our Castrol Power One products" , says Donald Smith, head of sponsorship Global Marketing Unit Castrol.

"We are approaching the 2011 season with a lot of optimism and we hope to achieve many victories in the championship," said Carlo Fiorani, head of the Honda Motor Europe racing unit. “It’s wonderful to have such an iconic motorsport brand as a sponsor and personally I think the Honda CBR 1000RR race bike is absolutely fantastic!”

At a time when motorsports are going through worrying financial and environmental difficulties, Castrol’s return to motorcycle racing is certainly excellent news. For its part, Ducati has also just announced a partnership with Shell in MotoGP..
