Jonathan Rea was again intractable this afternoon at Imola. The No.65 Ninja made a point of dedicating his eighth victory of the season to Joan Lascorz, former Kawasaki rider on the Italian circuit. Besides being a – future – great champion, "JR" is a nice guy. !
Second Superbike race
Tom Sykes started better than Davide Giugliano but it was Jonathan Rea who took the lead at the entrance to "Traguardo"! Behind the three men on the front row are Leon Haslam, Jordi Torres, Ayrton Badovini, Michael van den Mark, Alex Lowes, Leon Camier. Sylvain Guintoli is 11th, Randy de Puniet and Christophe Ponsson are 16th and 17th.
Boosted by his fifth place obtained at the end of the short first round, Sylvain Guintoli attacks a little too hard in the "Acqua Minerali" basin and finishes in the gravel pit … The world champion happily gets up without the assists commissioners and even greets the public.
On the track, Sykes immediately puts pressure on his teammate Rea. Giugliano tries to hang on to the two official Kawasaki and distances his own teammate Davies slightly. The two Aprilia Red Devils are about three seconds behind the leaders in the middle of the 2nd lap, just ahead of Van den Mark.
During the next two laps, the two factory ZX-10Rs gradually moved away from the Panigale … n ° 7 passed in front of n ° 34! Despite the support of his home crowd, Giugliano is unable to keep in touch with Davies. After Guintoli, de Puniet abandons the race by returning to the pits (like Camier), and Ponsson falls.
In the 8th lap, Jonathan Rea beats the lap record in the race but Tom Sykes is still hanging on! About ten seconds behind, Leon Haslam places his Aprilia under Michael van den Mark’s Honda. The Dutchman gets off the track and falls into the gravel.
The n ° 91 is however punished for his attack a bit virile by falling in his turn a few seconds later. The English driver gets up, holding his wrist: could it be that the number two in the championship misses "his" race at Donington Park in two weeks ?
Meanwhile, the excellent "JR" takes his lead over "Major Tom" to just over a second. Tom Sykes is himself almost six seconds ahead of Chaz Davies. Five seconds behind, Davide Giugliano and Jordi Torres fight for fourth place.
On the 11th lap, Sykes erased his teammate’s best time in the race but Johnny reacted on the following lap by setting the new record for this second race. In one loop, n ° 65 wins half a second on n ° 66! Seven laps to go Rea is 1.8 seconds ahead of Sykes…
Davies and his Ducati are relegated to 10 seconds behind the leader and his formidable Ninja. But while there are five laps to go, poor n ° 7 is again betrayed by his Panigale. "Chazie" ends his race on the low side, giving third place to Jordi Torres !
Rid of Davide Giugliano, the "Spanish Elvis" tumbles to his very first World Superbike podium, behind the two top names in the discipline and ahead of three Italians: Giugliano on his factory Ducati, Badovini on his BMW Italia and Baiocco on his Ducati Barni.
One year after his double on the Honda Fireblade, Jonathan Rea signed Imola his third double of the 2015 season at the controls of his Kawasaki Ninja! The n ° 65 continues his extraordinary start to the season: the northern Irishman has let slip only 10 points since the opening of the championship in Australia.
