Chaz Davies is still riding very hard in Aragon. He proved it again this Saturday noon by winning the first Spanish round of the WSBK 2016, far ahead of Jonathan Rea and Tom Sykes, his two main rivals in the world championship….
First Superbike race Aragon 2016
Tom "Super" Sykes got off to an excellent start and took the lead ahead of our national Sylvain Guintoli. Starting from fifth place on the grid, Jonathan Rea came out of the first series of turns in third position ahead of Chaz Davies and Davide Giugliano.
Alex Lowes widens in the twisty portion of the circuit and lets pass the two Hondas of Nicky Hayden and Michael Van den Mark. The Top 10 is completed by Leon Camier, Xavi Fores and Lorenzo Savadori. Our second representative, Sylvain Barrier, rolls in 21st position.
Giugliano attacks Rea in a snitch, but Rea retorts in the bang! The World Number One is again attacked by the Ducatis at the end of the long straight and sees the two leading men slip away: Sykes and Guintoli have a second lead at the end of the first lap !
Davies managed to get to the top of the chase group on the second lap and lost company to Rea and Giugliano on the next lap. Rid of the reigning world champion, the n ° 7 Ducati rider has the 2013 and 2014 champions in his sights….
Within the peloton, Van den Mark overtook his teammate Hayden. Fores, Camier and Lowes are doing their best to stay in contact with the two Honda … beautiful ugly middle of the 3rd lap, the Fireblade n ° 60 and its "Magic Michael" disappeared from the standings: VDM fell in the fifth corner. He reaches the stands on a scooter.
At the forefront on the track, "Chazie" easily climbs on our "Guinters" and passes him just as easily. The Welshman took advantage of the long straight to hoist his Panigale up to the level of the ZX-10R of "Major Tom" and plant a magnificent braking at the end of the descent.
Imperial at the start of the race, the "King" of Aragon then maintains his frantic pace and slowly but surely eludes Sykes. Guintoli is unable to follow the two Britons and is caught by Rea. The Northern Irishman slips his Ninja under the R1 n ° 50 at the end of the winding section and attacks the 5th lap in third position.
Our dear Sylvain Guintoli is quickly followed by the hot Giugliano, the experienced Hayden and the remarkable Fores. Italian Superbike champion two seasons ago, the Spanish rider delighted his audience by rubbing shoulders with big names in world motorcycle speed !
Leon Camier and his MV Agusta do not fail: they occupy a solitary 8th place, halfway between Fores on his Panigale and Torres on his S1000RR. Tenth place goes to Alex Lowes and his R1. A third Spaniard, Roman Ramos on ZX-10R, is in eleventh position. Barrier and his Ninja are 18th.
Giugliano started the second half of the race, passing Guintoli at the end of the short pit straight. Our Yamaha rider n ° 50 is struggling to stay in the aspiration of the official Panigale n ° 34, and feels the pressure of the Honda n ° 69 weighing on his shoulders! At the same time, Camier must give up in the 9th tou, betrayed by his beautiful F4.
Panigale n ° 7 runs like clockwork and Chaz Davies now has a comfortable lead (over three seconds!). The two factory Kawasaki are found wheel to wheel: inseparable three weeks ago in Thailand, Jonathan Rea and Tom Sykes put it back! The n ° 1 also seizes the second place in the 10th lap.
Far from his colleagues, the 2014 champion (Guintoli, who else?) Is overwhelmed on all sides: Hayden then Fores overtake him too easily, and Torres quickly finds himself in his aspi ‘… The "Frenchie" clings to his seventh place but the n ° 81 simply got rid of it when accelerating down the long left at the end of the course. Lowes fits in Sylvain’s wheel…
Four seconds ahead of this Jordi, Sylvain and Alex trio, Xavi Fores overtakes Nicky Hayden and manages to get ahead of Davide Giugliano! The Italian takes advantage of his factory engine to regain the advantage in the straight line but is passed over in the last curve…
The public gets up when its driver n ° 12 passes and cheers him warmly: Xavi is driving his Ducati wonderfully well, prepared by the private Barni team. In the following lap, the Spaniard distances Giugliano slightly and prevents him from coming back to contact in the straight line. He only has three laps left to take.
While Davies parades alone in the lead, Rea and Sykes are still riding in a tight formation … unfortunately not enough to spice up the end of the race: at the start of the last lap n ° 1 counts on n ° 66 several steps ahead and keep them until the checkered flag.
Chaz Davies takes a masterful victory, his fourth in Aragon, his first this season. The Welshman is thus relaunching brilliantly in the fight for the 2016 title … But Rea and Sykes accompany him on this first podium and score big points too !
Let us salute as it should the superb fourth place of Xavi Fores who hoists his Panigale in front of that, official, of Davide Giugliano. Disappointment on the other hand for Sylvain Guintoli: very well started from his 2nd place on the grid, he finished in ninth place, behind his teammate Alex Lowes. Sylvain Barrier finished four seconds from the first point.
