WSBK Spain (2): Davies wins ahead of Aprilia

Second Superbike race

The factory Kawasaki got off to an excellent start again, but Jonathan Rea widened in the first corner and let Chaz Davies and a Jordi Torres go much better than this morning! Michael Van den Mark completed the Top 5 ahead of Leon Haslam who passed Niccolo Canepa in the middle of the first loop, Michele Pirro, Matteo Baiocco and Sylvain Guintoli. Randy de Puniet and Christophe Ponsson are 17th and 18th.

Tom Sykes completed the first lap a good half a second ahead of Davies, ahead of Torres and Rea. The peloton was just a second further: Haslam passed Van den Mark on the second lap and left his former colleague Honda to manage three Ducati Panigale riders: Pirro, Canepa and Baiocco. Guintoli stays in touch.

At the end of the third round, "Major Tom" is propelled into his orbit: the Ninja n ° 66 is already almost a second and a half ahead of two duets: Davies and Torres, Rea and Haslam. In the pits, Alex Lowes stops his Suzuki n ° 22 and waits for his mechanics to change his rear tire.

In the background, Lowes’ teammate Randy de Puniet is aiming for 13th place occupied by Ayrton Badovini but the "Frenchie" n ° 14 is not the only one: Roman Ramos and David Salom is on his way. The four men are in the same second! Christophe Ponsson is six seconds later and fights against Gianluca Vizziello and Gabor Rizmayer.

Unfortunately in the 6th lap, Randy de Puniet fell in the standings: victim of a technical glitch on the formation lap, the Suzuki rider had to abandon this second round after failing to score points in first.

On the track, Tom Sykes starts the 7th lap with less than a second ahead of Chaz Davies … The temperature of the track, much higher than that of this morning, will it be right with the rear tire of the Kawasaki n ° 66? A clue perhaps: two seconds behind Sykes, his teammate Rea gives up his fourth place to Haslam…

Chaz Davies attacks the second half of the second round with a knife between his teeth: he is only half a second behind Tom Sykes! The two official Aprilia riders Jordi Torres and Leon Haslam are equidistant.

Michael van den Mark takes care to pass the new Superbike World Champion as cleanly as possible – Rea, who else? – when braking on turn 6, at the end of the opposite straight line. The # 65 Kawasaki isn’t the only one struggling on the hot Jerez track.

The poleman and winner of the first round, Tom Sykes, lost the pace and was overtaken by Davies on the 10th lap. In the next loop, Torres and then Haslam make short work of the # 66 Kawasaki, which turns a big second slower than its rivals…

Sykes’ ordeal continues when Michael van den Mark easily takes fifth place. The 2013 champion finds himself in the sights of the 2015 champion in the 13th lap … and is shot down in the next loop.

In front, Chaz Davies and his factory Ducati continue their formidable race and are two seconds ahead of an infernal trio: rookie Jordi Torres, experienced Leon Haslam and reigning Supersport world champion Michael van den Mark !

Unfortunately in the 16th lap, "Magic Mike" suddenly disappears from the track, in a cloud of smoke! The young Honda Pata rider crosses the gravel trap to retrieve his Fireblade and sets out again to attack, the fairing loaded with stones !

The "Spanish Elvis" and the "Pocket Rocket" now have a free hand to compete for the second step of the podium. The two Aprilia riders can no longer hope to catch up with "Chazie" (two seconds ahead) and cannot be threatened by "JR" (four seconds behind).

The French clan can not really rejoice: our 2014 champion "Guinters" is in ninth place and is dominated by Leon Camier and his MV Agusta … Christophe Ponsson is 16th, twenty seconds behind this sacred Michael van den Mark (15th ) !

Chaz Davies concludes a perfect race and takes his fifth victory of the season. Inseparable, Leon Haslam and Jordi Torres animate this second race to the end: the English n ° 91 tries to brake the Spanish n ° 81 in the last bend but widens and has to be satisfied with the third step of the podium.

The two RSV4s of the Red Devils team both enter the Top 3 for the first time this season. Two "firsts" also for the factory ZX-10Rs: they were ejected from the podium but ensured the Akashi firm its first constructor title in World Superbike !

Won this morning by Jonathan Rea, the world championship for Superbike drivers is not shaken up: Davies consolidates his second place (353 points) against Tom Sykes (331). Leon Haslam slightly distances Jordi Torres, Michael van den Mark grabs a few points from Sylvain Guintoli.
