WSBK Spain (2): Melandri and Guintoli do it again
As in the first round, Sylvain Guintoli lacked endurance this afternoon in Jerez and was beaten by his teammate Marco Melandri at the end of the race … Third behind the two official Aprilia, Tom Sykes gave up some additional points to the championship.
As in the first round, Sylvain Guintoli lacked endurance this afternoon in Jerez and was beaten by his teammate Marco Melandri at the end of the race … Third behind the two official Aprilia, Tom Sykes gave up some additional points to the championship.
Second Superbike race
This time Loris Baz started very well from his pole and took the lead ahead of Marco Melandri, Davide Giugliano, Sylvain Guintoli, Tom Sykes, Jonathan Rea, Eugene Laverty, Chaz Davies, Leon Haslam and Alex Lowes. Sylvain Barrier is 13th, Guarnoni 16th.
Guintoli on his RSV4 n ° 50 climbs to third place behind his teammate Melandri, but Giugliano responds tit for tat by attacking the two official Aprilia in the same sequence and seizes second place !
Baz completed the first lap ahead of Giugliano, Guintoli, Sykes and Melandri. Laverty is a few lengths from the Top 5 and leads the peloton made up of Davies, Rea, Haslam and Lowes. Elias drives ahead of the first Evo riders: Canepa and Barrier.
Guintoli and Sykes pass the No.34 Ducati on the second lap. Sylvain even propels himself to the front of the race on the first braking of the 3rd lap. Sykes imitates his best enemy and passes Baz in the same 3rd loop. Melandri, Giugliano and Davies are found in the Wheel of Baz.
At the very end of the 3rd lap, Giugliano leaves the track and once again abandons his Ducati in the gravel pit. On the track, Baz is surprised on the brakes by Melandri in the sixth turn and has to let Davies pass at the same time….
In front, the No. 50 Aprilia keeps half a second ahead of the "Number One" Kawasaki at the start of the 6th lap. Tom himself is just a second ahead of the second official Aprilia rider, Marco Melandri, closely followed by Chaz Davies. Loris Baz him, must be wary of Laverty, Rea, Haslam, Lowes and Elias !
Further on, Barrier dominates the "Evo race": eleventh overall, the BMW Italia rider could not stay in the aspiration of Toni Elias’ Superbike. Our two-time Superstock 1000 champion fights with Andreozzi. Morais follows at five seconds, chased by our other compatriot Guarnoni.
While Guintoli firmly holds the reins of the race, slightly increasing his lead over Sykes and Melandri, now very close to each other, Baz cracked against Laverty and Rea. In the 9th lap, Haslam in turn finds himself in the wheel of Kawasaki n ° 76…
Half the race is over and Sylvain Guintoli has a big second ahead of his two pursuers, Tom Sykes and Marco Melandri. The Italian goes on the attack in the first corner of the 11th lap and steals the world champion for his second place.
More than five seconds behind "Guinters", Davies is riding alone on his Panigale. Laverty is caught by Rea, while Baz is still threatened by Haslam and Lowes. Toni Elias completed the Top 10, far ahead of Barrier, still leading Evo rider. Andreozzi falls in the 13th lap and gives up his second place Evo to Guarnoni !
In front, Melandri moves away from Sykes … and quickly approaches Guintoli! At the end of the 16th lap, Marco is only three lengths behind his teammate. The Italian lodged in the Frenchman’s asp on the straight line and managed to overtake him on the brakes before plunging into the first corner.
Much faster than Sylvain, Marco escapes visibly! Guintoli does not give up, unlike Sykes who completely loses contact with the two official Aprilia in the last laps and seems to be satisfied with his third place..
After a slight jump in the 17th loop, n ° 50 let n ° 33 go alone towards victory, his second of the day! Again dominated by Aprilia, the Spanish podium is this time completed by a Kawasaki: the n ° 1 of Tom Sykes.
Chaz Davies beats Jonathan Rea by nothing on the finish line, the Honda rider having come up like a cannonball in the very last laps! Loris Baz who resisted Haslam finished 7th, Barrier 11th and 1st Evo, Guarnoni 13th and 3rd Evo !
In the championship, Sykes now has a 31-point lead over Guintoli. Author of the double in Jerez, Melandri climbs to fourth position, 5 points ahead of Baz and 36 points behind Rea. The next – and penultimate – distribution of points will take place in a month at Magny-Cours: stay tuned !
