Variable valve control and anti-hopping clutch

Yamaha has presented a brand new model for the young: the new Yamaha MT-125 will be rolling onto the streets in the 2020 model year with a new engine and a more adult look.

At the end of September there was a first official teaser video from Yamaha, in which the now presented MT-125 was hinted at. At that time, however, the Japanese did not reveal which model it actually was. The only thing that was clear was that a brand new MT would be presented on October 16. As we suspected, the new bike is a smaller model, more precisely a new one Yamaha MT-125.

New engine with variable valve timing

Similar to the new MT-03, the Yamaha MT-125 also has a more mature design, which is based on the larger MT models. The relationship to the MT-09 can be seen especially on the front. The rear area has also become shorter. In contrast to the 300, the MT-125 also gets a new engine, which is said to be more powerful than the previous model. Yamaha donated the newcomer, which was derived from the drive of the YZF-R 125, a variable valve control, which has a positive effect on the top performance.

Among other things, Yamaha has given the new MT-125 a new engine.

In the press release, Yamaha describes the performance of the new engine in detail: The variable valve control is a system with two intake cams that are provided with their own rocker arm. The lower cam is active at speeds of up to 7,400 rpm and should therefore particularly stand out in the low and medium speed range. At speeds above 7,400 rpm, a solenoid valve switches the engine to the upper cam. This ensures a higher peak performance between 7,400 / min and the maximum speed of 10,000 / min. Speaking of maximum speed: compared to the previous model, this has been increased by 1,000 rpm. The transmission has also been thoroughly revised.

New Yamaha MT-125 with slipper clutch

In addition to the new engine, Yamaha has given the MT-125 an anti-hopping clutch. The new clutch should have a positive impact, especially in city traffic. A 41 mm upside-down fork with a suspension travel of 130 mm is supposed to ensure good road holding. The new MT-125, however, has to accept compromises in terms of tank capacity: The new MT-125 only fits 10 liters; the previous model had 11.5 liters. This loss is likely to be attributed to the more aggressive and compact design of the new model. For the lighting, Yamaha relies on two slightly angled position lights. There is space for a compact LED headlight underneath the two lamps.

The look of the new MT-125s is reminiscent of more powerfully motorized sister models.

Also new is a one-piece, tight-fitting bench that is said to have a positive effect on seating comfort. With the new LCD cockpit you can choose between a black and white background. Apart from this, in addition to the speed, two trip meters, a reserve odometer, a timer, the current and average fuel consumption and the average speed can be called up. Another innovation is a so-called Deltabox frame and a new aluminum swing arm, which should enable better balance and thus better handling. As a result, the wheelbase has also become a bit smaller, which is now 1,325 mm and is thus 30 mm shorter than the previous model. Thanks to the new swing arm made of aluminum, a 140 mm rear drawn can now also be fitted. In addition, Yamaha has given the new MT-125 a 292 brake disc, which is otherwise used in vehicles with more powerful engines.

From December 2019, from 4,799 euros

The new Yamaha MT-125 will be available from dealers from December 2019 and is available in the colors "Ice Fluo", "Icon Blue" and "Tech Black". Cost: from 4,799 euros (plus additional costs).

Conclusion

New look, new engine, new slipper clutch: Yamaha has given the new MT-125 some successful updates that could be well received by the youngsters. We are looking forward to the first ride with the new Yamaha 125cc.
