Yamaha Quad Raptor 700
Yamaha Quad Raptor 700
Four for fun
Stefan Kaschel
07/06/2005
It was a good 15 years ago that the author had his first encounter of the fourth kind. A quad rider cheekily overtook the ambitious but at that moment completely perplexed motorcyclist. A blink of an eye later, the four-wheel pilot balanced the device, which was unusual at the time, on the two left wheels. And turned around laughing.
Now the grins are back: First active experiences came from a Yamaha presentation in a former brown coal mining area in Brandenburg with the fun device Raptor 700. Serves as a base
the water-cooled single of the Enduro XT 660 R. With the same nominal output of 48 hp, the modified injector, which has been drilled out by two millimeters, applies a generous amount of torque to the rear balloon tires, especially in the lower speed range. In contrast, the maximum torque was reduced by three to 55 Nm. As with a motorcycle, a balancer shaft soothes the single-cylinder runout.
Gear in, clutch out, and the quad-typical »thumb button« operated as a replacement throttle grip. Cross your fingers and go! If the 44 millimeter throttle valve is at 90 degrees, i.e. full throttle, does the Raptor pull through without ever choking? even if the gear is too high. It pushes and pushes, there’s always some way forward. Or sideways, sliding over the front wheels in full drift.
The special driving physics ensures rapid success. Even off-road newbies can plow around the course in a rather spectacular way after a few careful laps to get to know each other. To drift, simply turn the handlebars fully and open the gas. The raptor prefers to be fast,
sandy passages with light waves and not too extreme jumps. A four-wheeled soft enduro. And if you can’t go any further: reverse gear. The upright sitting position behind the high handlebars is pleasant. The spring elements filter out rough bumps in a surprisingly effective and comfortable manner.
But calm blood, when driving at the limit, the lightness suddenly turns into insidiousness. The point of no return
can be reached quickly. Where a cross motorcycle easily forgives a diagonal jump with a little correction, the quad threatens to crash or crash-land. A composite frame ensures stability so that it can withstand such rough handling; the front frame made of steel tubes is bolted to cast aluminum parts that form the backbone. The wishbones of the front wheel guide and the swing arm with integrated eccentric for easy tensioning of the drive chain are also made of aluminum. The finely crafted components reduce the curb weight to just 180 kilograms.
And the unfamiliar “throttle” initially limits the driving time to 20 minutes. Then the untrained thumb quits its service. The fitness program is called accelerating. If this is to be done on public roads, around 1000 euros must be invested for a road approval including conversion parts at the purchase price of 8840 euros. You also need a driver’s license and a helmet. For uncompromising sports freaks Yamaha the revised Sportquad YFZ 450. With the 9,190 euro off-road racer, it’s even more crisp around the corner? without any reverse gear. Just never forget the smile…
