The XJS 600 Diversion was Yamaha’s entry-level roadster that many youngsters loved. Easy, cheap, uncomplicated, a little tight in power but ready for any service without fuss, this handyman was not lacking in hard work and did it without ever complaining. But the anti-pollution standards, the fashion, the seniority, brought him to slowly die out at the beginning of the 21st century, digging a void in the Yamaha range, that the Fazer, more technical and of the higher range, could not. to fill in.
But the good surprise has arrived. 2009 saw the birth of a new small road in 600cc: the XJ6 Diversion. And as good news never comes on its own, this basic bike is lined with a naked version, ideal for driving schools and young drivers..
Like their ancestors, these two versions are technically extremely close. The main and almost unique difference between the 2 versions is the diversion’s fork crown. Angular without being sharp, it gives a little sporty side, and above all a judicious protection. The road accessible to all, and especially to young people, that’s his thing.
With all the technology that modern sports cars are throwing at us, we would have almost forgotten the simple solutions. Not the XJ6 Diversion. Like her grandmother XJS, she adopts a quieter design than technology showcases. Here, no variable intake, perimeter Deltabox, traction control, radial brake calipers or MotoGP type inverted fork…. No, here, we use what it takes to drive, not to snap the pendulums, and if this 600 does not have the chassis of a hypersport (radical and unliveable on the open road), it enjoys a higher price. accessible than the Fazer (very close to that of its competitors) and with a much higher road capacity.
Arsouiller? The XJ6 Diversion will appreciate moderately. The pleasure of riding? She smiles again. The technical solutions implemented here confirm this trend. The bike uses a classic tubular diamond-type steel frame, less expensive than an aluminum perimeter like that of the FZ6. These 31.8mm diameter tubes are 2.3mm thick create a simple frame that almost completely disappears under the cabinet. The exhaust is also very discreet, hiding under the engine and behind the boot. The wheelbase, like the hunting angle, reveals wise and reassuring values. A new fork, new aluminum rims and a new swingarm are part of the game. The latter does not look like much, but that’s not what we ask of him.
The brake discs are slightly thinner than those of the FZ6. They are associated with conventional 2-piston calipers, optionally lined with ABS (+ 400 euros).
Ah, I see some pouting in the background…. Are you bothering about the normal 41mm fork? Doesn’t that throw away enough? You prefer a reverse like on a 600 GSX-R, with a sharp chassis…. Yeah, but that’s not the philosophy of the machine; and the gex costs 4,000 euros more.
For the engine, there is no question of using the XJS as a fire, an antique air-cooled engine. The new Diversion uses a modern, clean and compact 4-cylinder. Coming from the FZ6, and originally derived from the R6, this boiler is somewhat modified and suitable for versatile and available use. Engine response, torque, and mapping are optimized for low and mid-range, those most commonly used on this type of machine. Let’s hope that this new moulbif has more character than the old 600 8 valve air cooled, supple and nice but without relief. Cylinder head, camshafts, injection, clutch and gearbox selection are reviewed. Enough to make it an urban machine more than sympathetic, hoping that it will make us forget the harsh gear passages of the old XJ 600.
The XJ had disappeared…. and is reborn under an equivocal name. Same philosophy but more modern, more enticing, it comes at the right time to sinter with the new Kawasaki ER-6f, Suzuki Bandit 650 and the recently renewed Honda CBF 600.
