When the XSR 900 was unveiled, I told you this at the bottom of the sheet: “… fit it a pair of handlebars, a single-seater saddle, an XJR 1300 Racer fork crown, an exhaust to the sportier look, Ohlins suspense and you would make a great cafe-racer … “
It seems that someone from the com at Yamaha got wind of this good reading. Because this special XSR 900 Abarth series takes exactly these stylistic codes; with the exception of Ohlins suspensions. Adorned thus, the roadster is transformed into a true cafe-racer, punchy with a lot of style. The front is menacing, as it should be for a race of streets and avenues, with its inverted fork and radial brake calipers; like all machines developed on the basis of an MT-09. The Abarth series is even more aggressive, with its handlebars turned upside down, imitating half-handlebars and resulting in a very sporty riding position. And what a threat with its carbon fork crown stung to the disappeared XJR 1300 Racer.
Who says special series often says unique color. This is also the case for the XSR 900 Abarth, coated in a gray marked with red stripes. Three scorpions, the emblem of the house, ride on the motorcycle, marking the tank, front fender and seat cowl. These last two elements, like the micro-fairing, are made of carbon fiber. One way of emphasizing the sporting as well as the modern side of the machine. To fulfill its destiny, the big XSR breathes via an Akrapovic titanium exhaust, finished with a double Slip-on silencer. Sounds, style and performances will accompany the Slovenian breath. For the seat, a specific suede saddle with red stitching validates the premium side. Behind, the plate holder is minimal to blend in with the spirit; as often, he will be more at ease in the trash than to make the hindquarters ugly. A numbered aluminum plate authenticates this series by resting on the case to the right of the frame; Would it not have been better to fix it on the tank or the handlebars ?!?
Yamaha is not at its first attempt with the Italian preparer. In 2009, an Abarth Assetto Corse creation based on FZ1 was created to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of its creator Karl (Carlo) Alberto Abarth. This special edition was more or less to lead to a limited production of which we have never seen the slightest bolt; in contrast to this XSR 900 Abarth which will be produced in 695 copies. According to a two-stage distribution method: as for the R1-M, Yamaha is setting up a dedicated online registration system (here: www.xsr900-abarth.eu) where the first 95 buyers were invited to participate in a exclusive Abarth VIP experience. Once this quota is validated, the other 600 XSR 900 Abarth are available through the classic dealer network..
Why 695 copies? Because at the same time as this special series, the Abarth company is unveiling a concept car with the same graphic codes as this Yam roadster: the 695 Tributo XSR. This show car commemorates the legendary 695 from 1964, the most successful model of the Fiat 500 line transformed by the house of Abarth.
Apart from the Yard Built creations, Yamaha has until now only offered pure sports cars, ready to emancipate itself towards Supersport and Superbike. Here is a machine that blends in with the current trend, ready to provoke brawls and thrusts with the BMW NineT Racer, Triumph Thruxton R, Honda CB 1100 RS and Ducati 800 Scrambler Cafe-Racer. The ardor and character of the CP3 engine is well established. Full, playful and powerful, the three-cylinder Yamaha benefits from a recent update of its injection maps and traction control graft to be smoother. Its perimeter aluminum frame has more rigorous suspensions than on the MT-09. But for this sleeker version, Ducati-style damping would be more appropriate. Let’s stop bitching with this heresy of having lowered the handlebars rather than having offered him real bracelets.
We can bet that this limited series XSR 900 Abarth calls for other achievements; the Fasters Sons will be keen to take advantage of the trend.
