Yamaha YZF-R1 1000 2001

Let’s not skimp on words. When it was released in 1998, the R1 revolutionized the world of sports. Offering an unprecedented weight / power ratio, Yamaha’s new big sports car immediately imposed itself, sweeping the benchmarks, becoming THE sports machine. Even before driving it, we are in tune: taut lines, aggressive look, reinforced swingarm and inverted fork – and a plastic that has made history..
Once in the saddle, it’s horrible! No Japanese will have been so radical. The saddle is thick like a slice of ham and the overall comfort is… In fact, it was not part of the specification. The R1 has only one vocation: efficiency.
To do this, it combines the strengths. First of all, a minimum weight barely exceeding 200 kgs all full; but above all an ultra fiery and more than generous 4-cylinder. Overflowing with torque, it provides the R1 with lightning revolutions as well as great flexibility. This would almost allow this sportswoman to circulate in town without batting an eyelid … It would be without counting on the position of the pilot, without compromise or velvet. A little stretched out and totally tilted forward, you subject your wrists to a quickly painful exercise session. In comparison, a Kawa ZX-6R or a 600 CBR offers limousine comfort. Quick, flee to a circuit. Forget the highway – The minimalist protection will quickly exterminate your cervicals already bruised by the urban journey.

Arrival on the track. Here, the R1 is in its element; imperial, superb, swollen with pride, the motorbike is begging to reveal itself. More delicate and demanding than a 900 CBR, the machine asks a lot of its pilot. You have to be attentive, firm, move on the bike, and have a good technical background to get the most out of it. In return, the machine is very manoeuvrable, extremely precise and extremely efficient. Tortured in town but here ideally placed, the experienced pilot can make the most of the beast, imposing pronounced angles and manly acceleration. Be careful, however, because the large torque can overwhelm you if you are too optimistic about the throttle when exiting a curve. The gearbox is precise, the suspensions are excellent and the braking stands out as a benchmark. The front axle is very agile but shows a tendency to handle on surfaces with random coating (steering damper strongly recommended).
Pleasure, sensations, efficiency, radicality … the R1 offers you a hell of a dose of adrenaline. And as if that were not enough, the finish is quality, the “titanium” pot throws a max, and above all, the bike is simply magnificent..
