Auto Fabrica is one of the UK’s most promising preparers, combining avant-garde design with classic style. Yamaha therefore approached this mechanical workshop, knowing that it would design a unique model without sacrificing its handling. An essential part of the Sports Heritage range, the XSR 900 was chosen for its vast customization capabilities, as well as the power of its 847 cc three-cylinder engine that no longer needs to be demonstrated..
Auto Fabrica co-founders Bujar and Gaz Muharremi called on their great designer friend Toby Mellor to design the Type 11 Prototype One. This design was to reinterpret the boundaries that separate classicism from modernism. The team decided it would be a track bike so it wouldn’t be held back by regulations for use on open roads..
The story begins with the Prototype One.
This one is a racehorse, thought out down to the smallest detail, evocative of raw power. Ohlins suspensions, Brembo calipers, special PFM brake discs and custom BST carbon rims allow for a more intense ride. Made of 3D printed nylon-carbon, the computer-designed components combined with carbon fiber elements and featuring Zirotek coatings harmoniously match the radical-styled, hand-crafted aluminum bodywork. A flush dial, contrasting saddle, quick-fill competition tank, and handcrafted 3-into-3 escapement complete the package..
The story continues with the arrival of the Prototype Three.
It quickly became clear that this bike started a long history. The team now imagined a machine with the same DNA but allowed to hit the road. The Prototype Three took shape, using the mechanical foundation of the legendary Yamaha XS 750. Featuring typical 1970s motorcycle styling, this XS 750 had something to inspire Auto Fabrica. High performance parts increased its power, and the team propelled this machine straight into the future. Brembo calipers and a Motogadget dashboard combine with flowing shapes created using classic sheet metal techniques and handworking. These elements combine with creative interpretations of classic designs, such as 3D printed carburetor gills and custom-made headlight structures. The sandblasted metal exhaust is characteristic of Auto Fabrica.
A legend is born with the Prototype Two.
After Prototype One and Prototype Two, the direction to take was clear. The Prototype Two Type 11 combined the characteristics of the first two creations in order to adapt to road use. Prototype Two was developed on the basis of XSR 900. It draws its power from Prototype One, while borrowing the aesthetics of Prototype Three. The combination of different styles and design techniques gives the Prototype Two its powerful appearance. Round headlight, traditional tank cap, padded seat, indicator lights, road profile tires and metallic silver paintwork tightly connect the Prototype Two to the classic styling of the Prototype Three.
“Watching this project evolve has been really special for all of us,” commented Antoine Clemot, Yamaha Motor Europe Product Manager, Motorcycle Division. “We started from a great idea with a great bike to come up with three incredible creations that fit perfectly into the Yamaha Yard Built platform. We’re also excited that the Prototype Two is up and running soon. often unique models and it is an extraordinary pleasure for all of us to know that this bike is going to be driven in the real world by design enthusiasts. ”
The Prototype Two will be offered in a very limited series, sold to order as Type 11 from Auto Fabrica. The first deliveries should take place between summer and fall 2018.
