Zero shows the new FXE and remains surprisingly close to the Huge study with the production model. Above all, the characteristic duck bill and the supermoto style have been taken over quite precisely.

Zero FXE: electric supermoto in the driving report
Driving report Zero FXE 7.2 2021
Enough, Zero, enough
With the FXE, Zero shows that you can build good motorcycles from very good studies. This is how the new electric supermoto drives.

Yes, the new electric motorcycles cannot yet keep up with the classic combustion engines in terms of range. But enough has been written and talked about. Today it’s about the driving experience of the new Zero FXE 7.2.
Cyclists as friends
We drove around 85 kilometers, one lap – exactly from hotel to hotel. The batteries are empty, we’re back. That worked. But is that enough otherwise? For the time being, it has to be enough, battery technology doesn’t offer anything else. At least not without the matter becoming heavy as lead. If you want more range, you have to drive a combustion engine, that’s that. Or do you have to ask yourself exactly what you want beforehand? 100 kilometers? No problem, you can do that. However, if it is to be 150 kilometers, it will be thin. Only those who discipline the driving mode and the throttle can do that. The drives in cautious eco mode instead “Sports”. The FXE then goes far less full and more restrained on the gas, but recuperates more noticeably. So let’s assume it’s enough. Then 85 kilometers of driving fun are guaranteed. Because regardless of whether at 50 km / h or 100 km / h (Vmax according to the speedometer 140 km / h): the 106 Newton meters push the FXE, which weighs only 135 kilograms, powerfully. Here, too, at the gates of Amsterdam, where the highest point is the dike and the second highest is a molehill. Here, vertical meters are as rare as curves. If you don’t let it fly here, you will be punished immediately by cyclists. Their owners close the zero Incidentally, immediately into her heart. That is also an important aspect of electric mobility – it fits here.
Whisper-quiet city child
The area of application of the new FXE is thus largely defined. She is actually a city child, feels surrounded by houses, stopped by drawbridges and braked by lines of cars. However, this also applies to the dike. A slight whistle from the engine, the hum of the toothed belt, here and there a screeching brake – that’s what creates such a zero background noise. She whispers against the wind. The Zero-Troop fits seamlessly into this calm landscape with its nice people and happy cows and sheep. Live and let live. That is also electro.

Light-footed supermoto
Some information on the specification of the new FXE. It is a supermoto, based on the well-known FXS, but with a new outfit. Huge-Design from California thought about it, the result was a convincing design that clearly differs from the well-known FXS. However, the technical data are identical: the battery stores 7.2 kWh of energy, the electric motor delivers 106 Newton meters of torque from a standstill, the peak output is 44 hp, and the weight is a playful 135 kilograms. With a full tank, of course. This makes the FXE one of the few electric motorcycles that does not overwhelm its rider with the weight of its battery pack at the first contact. On the contrary, it scurries lightly through the stationary traffic to the front row. Starting the traffic light itself is child’s play. Just electricity, and off you go the electric rider. Without clutching, without shifting, but blessed with perfect throttle response – when the engine is running under load. The FXE takes a minute to think about the push operation. This fraction of a second should be taken into account if you want to put the Zero on the rear wheel.
Big undercarriage
The chassis is easy to handle, the coordination of the Showa spring elements (spring travel 178/227 millimeters) is comfortable. This applies to the fully adjustable 41 mm upside-down fork as well as to the fully adjustable shock absorber. The feedback from the narrow 110 front wheel is just as transparent as that of the 140 rear wheel, the Pirelli Diablo Rosso II do a good job. The FXE can do without assistance in the form of traction control despite the considerable torque, and a Bosch ABS keeps watch when braking. This cannot be switched off, but with a sufficient speed difference between the front and rear wheels (burnout) it can be sent into a limited coma. In the event that someone wants to save tire rubber on the front wheel.

However, in the event that one or the other reader is crackling with tension, a warning should be given. As is currently the case with all motorcycles in this genre, the new FXE is not a bargain. Zero calls for 13,650 euros, regardless of whether with the full continuous output of 15 kW (A2 driving license suitable) or the 11 kW version (A1 / B196 driving license). Both have in common: 44 HP peak power and the pressure on the rear wheel is always enough for rapid progress, a gentle pressure on the handlebars for a quick change of direction. The time of contemplation, on the other hand, is clearly tough. Ideally, it is night when the FXE is plugged into the house socket. You should calculate a good nine hours with a completely empty battery, with an optional fast charger (821 euros) this range is reduced by around half. Then 95 percent of the battery is charged again.
Conclusion
If we move away from the oppressive discussions about ranges and how an electric motorcycle should or should be driven, the FXE from Zero shows that there is the right two-wheeler for every two-wheeler use. The FXE is just something for the city. Low in emissions and high in power, but for the limited urban space .
