Normally, selected MOTORRAD readers get to know a new motorcycle in detail at a reader test ride. At the Zero event, there was a lot more – namely their electric premiere.

Numerous readers applied for one of the seven places for the zero Reader Test Ride 2020, during which the Zero SR / F and Zero SR / S models could be tested for two days – including hotel and catering. We drove under the guidance of a tour guide on wonderful routes in the southern Thuringian Forest. MOTORRAD editor Stefan Kaschel was there and reports from the Zero Reader Test Ride 2020:
For once, the usual numbers that are usually discussed first when it comes to electromobility were not in the room. Purchase price – not even in a half-sentence. Range – not an issue here today. Charging time – only briefly touched upon. Namely, when Tourgide Toni presented the route planned for the next day from the Hotel Rennsteig in Masserberg through the Thuringian Forest to the Linkenmuhle in Gossitz. There, around 100 kilometers away, where the Saale damms up to the Hohenwarte dam, we want to stop for lunch and reload. The Zeros too, by the way.

So everything has already been taken care of, including the all-important charging station. We can therefore talk about the important things in e-biker life. About torque, for example. The number of the day is 190. This is how many Newton meters it should be that the electric motor delivers to the front pulley without going through a gearbox, from the first turn on. 190 Newton meters – the faces of the seven winners are mixed with hopeful anticipation and thoughtful respect. How does such a torque surge feel? And what do they do with our test bikes, the 225 kilogram Zero SR / F and the ten kilogram heavier disguised SR / S. Also exciting: How do the poor Pirelli Diablo Rosso III rear tires in 180 format, which are usually good for plenty of grip, cope with that? “Do not worry”, Zero man Ralf Czaplinski calms down, “Traction control and cornering ABS from Bosch are of course on board.” Everything else is self-explanatory, so get into your motorcycle clothes and get in touch.
“Normally we would have to scream”
It turns out to be amazingly simple indeed. Put on the gas – and go, because the propulsion can be controlled better than with any combustion engine using the throttle grip. Do you actually need a driver’s license for this?”, jokes one of the group at the first red light. Only now is it noticeable that normal conversation is possible at all in this situation. Normally, we’d have to scream to drown out the rumbling engines. But here and now there is an eerie calm, only the ticking of the traffic lights signals the traffic light phase. When it stops and the traffic light turns green, the group quickly starts moving. Only a faint whirring can be heard, passers-by look behind in amazement. They didn’t expect that.

And we do not accelerate with this. Or better: with this silent acceleration. But be careful: This seamless propulsion without coupling strangles and combustion engine accompanying orchestra quickly disguises the actual speed. Fortunately, Tourgide Toni drives in front and nobody can get past him. He largely adheres to the speed limits, while behind him everyone in the group is playing with the throttle after a short familiarization. Quite simply to see what’s going on.
Effortlessness also convinces skeptics
The strategy of the 110 hp power pack is always the same. Anyone who answers every sugar in the gas hand with perfectly dosed propulsion cannot do much wrong. Especially not when it modulates depending on the current mode – Sport, Street, Eco or Rain. This means noticeable differences in terms of propulsion as well as recuperation via the rear wheel (engine brake). Of course, all of this can also be adjusted in a personal mode and of course there is an app for this. But for the test ride winners, this is not the central issue even after two eventful days. That’s the same in every conversation “Ease”, which has also convinced skeptics of the group.
In terms of chassis and comfort, on the other hand, there are suggestions for improvement here and there, especially the GS group, which is again strong on this test ride, demands a more appealing shock absorber and more space for luggage and pillion rider. And if you’re already thinking about traveling on the Zero: What about the range? And what does it cost?
