2004 Kawasaki ZX-6RR 600

The ZX line (6, 9 and 12 R) has until now relied on versatility to seduce – but Kawa has decided to go back to crude, radical. as proof, this new ZX-6R: a racing machine equipped with indicators. The only concession to the road: a 636 cm3 version (appeared on the previous generation of ZX-6R). this to preserve a minimum of torque and ease of use. The first contact with the machine is an opportunity to check that indeed, the old ZX-6R is getting a serious look. Despite an identical wheelbase, the new one seems more collected, taller and thinner. For the height, it is an optical illusion, due to the new design. On the other hand, the seat height increases by 5 mm, the straps pass under the triple tree and the screen is shorter. On the engine side, the first surprise is that it has become very hollow at low revs. Where the old one pulled gently from 4000 revs, the new one does not wake up before 7000 revs. No more protection and comfort. Now the 600 Ninja is racing! But progress is good: we finally note the disappearance of the gasoline valve in favor of a switch to automatic reserve as well as roller trips. The dashboard is ultra-modern, but the tachometer could be more readable.

Let’s go back to the mill. Once in the towers, it metamorphoses: frankly weak under 7000 revs, it finally snorts to push shamelessly from 9500 revs. However, it is really only between 13,000 and 15,000 trs that he takes his turns like a fury. The gear ratios have been brought closer for better efficiency on the track. The new chassis is a marvel of stability, with a front axle as precise and safe as that of other current super sports cars. The ZX-6RR is easy to register when cornering, predictable, but also a bit smoother than the old one. The new fork (now inverted) shows extraordinary rigidity. This allows you to take full advantage of the power and feel of the new radially mounted brake calipers. The new ZX-6RR has become a weapon on the racetrack, losing the charm of its versatility that set it apart from other supersports. But now she’s formidable.
