The 450 SX-F is a KTM designed to win; it draws its potential from a large-displacement engine and a perfectly adapted chassis. Ryan Dungey won the AMA MX1 class title in 2012 riding this bike and he had absolutely no reason to want to change models to defend his title.. It’s no wonder that the compact SOHC engine and its innovative injection technology deliver raw but easily controllable power. The 450 SX-F stands out among the big four-strokes in terms of performance and handling. It is the right choice for all motocross riders who want maximum torque and power in the MX1 category, while maintaining easily controllable handling..
MOTOR
The compact 60 HP powerhouse with overhead camshaft and all-new electronic fuel injection shines with unrivaled performance and even more efficient power delivery. Improved crankcase on model year 2014 further reduces weight.
CYLINDER HEAD
In the engine cylinder head of the 450 SX-F, an overhead camshaft controls four ultra-light titanium valves via the extremely robust, DLC-coated rocker arm on the intake side. This configuration allows speeds in excess of 11,500 rpm and contributes significantly to the unique performance of the large-displacement KTM engine. The 2014 model year incorporates a new triple butted head gasket which is even more robust in the most extreme conditions. The now lower weight camshaft also has a reinforced automatic decompression mechanism.
PISTONS
The 95mm bore cylinder accommodates an extremely lightweight forged piston in the Box-in-Box design; its light weight contributes greatly to the low level of vibration and the high speeds supported by the engine. The compression ratio is 12.6: 1. The piston pin optimized for the 2014 model year ensures greater robustness.
EMBELLISHMENT
The crankshaft of the 450 SX-F with 63.4 mm of stroke is fitted with a sliding bearing in the lower connecting rod eye. Two pressed bearings are directly connected to the crank pin of the crankshaft. the pressurized lubrication of the motor ensures the oil supply to the bearing. This construction is essential for the high revs and impressive peak performance of the 450 SX-F engine. Another decisive advantage for customers is the extended crankshaft maintenance intervals thanks to the sliding bearing..
BALANCING SHAFT
The laterally placed balance shaft also serves as a drive for the water pump. Thanks to the perfect weight balance and the low moving masses of the engine, it has been possible to limit its vibrations even at maximum speeds..
CRANKCASE
For this new 2014 model, the engine crankcase manufactured by die-casting process has been further improved. Elimination of the kick starter dome resulted in even more weight savings compared to previous models.
CLUTCH
The engine of the 450 SX-F has a DDS (Damped Diaphragm Steel) clutch developed by KTM with wear-resistant steel housing and extremely heat-resistant friction surfaces. This construction is distinguished by the use of a spring washer instead of the usual spiral springs, which significantly reduces the force to be applied. The stronger spring washer on the 2014 model year leaves room for the integrated shock absorber hub: an advantage in terms of grip and durability. A training cleat optimized for the 2014 model year now guarantees even better resistance. Brembo’s hydraulically operated clutch with new clutch housing guarantees easy and easily controllable modulation.
GEARBOX
The engine of the 450 SX-F is fitted with a light 4-speed gearbox, specially adapted to the characteristics of the large-displacement engine and with an optimized geometry of the gears, new for the 2014 model year. On the American market, the 450 SX-F is fitted with a 5-speed gearbox which is a bit heavier but better suited to the requirements of US customers.
ENGINE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (EMS)
Keihin’s Engine Management System with electronic fuel injection, 44mm throttles, as well as the revolutionary injector position developed by KTM, ensure spontaneous reaction and maximum engine performance. The 450 SX-F’s wire harness has been further simplified for the 2014 model year and the quality of cables and connectors improved. Many connectors are now protected against pressurized steam jets with new rubber grommets. The Map-Select-Switch available in the PowerPart catalog also allows different motor characteristics to be selected via the EMS. In addition, an optional User-Setting-Tool allows the use of a laptop computer to access motorcycle data and modify the ignition and fuel injection mapping in just a few clicks..
ELECTRIC STARTER
Like all KTM four-stroke motorcycles, the 450 SX-F ignites at the push of a button. It is especially in the heat of the motocross action that the electric starter becomes an invaluable advantage..
FRAMEWORK
The modern frame design of the SX models made of lightweight, high-strength chrome-molybdenum steel profile tubes combines maximum longitudinal stiffness with optimum torsional rigidity. This not only offers good handling behavior and precise steering, but also excellent driving stability..
SWINGING ARM
The cast aluminum swingarm was designed using state-of-the-art calculation and simulation software; the design and the thickness of the walls ensure a minimum weight for an optimal robustness and a perfectly defined flex. For the 2014 model year, engineers have improved the chain guide and its attachment points on the swingarm for improved reliability and reduced weight.
SUSPENSION / AMORTIZATION
Both the rear shock absorber and the 48mm inverted fork from WP Suspension ensure optimum handling for damping and responsiveness. In the 2014 model year, the telescopic fork shines with optimized adjustment and greater impact reserves. The rebound and compression of the fork can quickly be adjusted to the needs of the rider and the track. The rear shock absorber also allows High-Speed and Low-Speed adjustment of the compression damping.
FORK TIES
High-quality CNC-milled triple trees have been standard at KTM for years. They ensure precise handling and clearly emphasize the flex characteristics and therefore the responsiveness of the telescopic fork..
EXHAUST
FIM noise limits are a huge challenge for motocross manufacturers, and KTM goes to great lengths to meet them. The 450 SX-F is also equipped with hydroformed parts and an additional resonance chamber (Header Resonator System HRS) to provide greater torque while reducing noise..
FAIRING
The aim was to create a more ergonomic and functional fairing, so that the whole bike in every detail is in perfect harmony with the rider. The molded plastic parts of the front mudguard are a model of solidity thanks to their sophisticated structure and attachment.
SADDLE
The perfectly ergonomic 2014 model year saddle contains an improved foam core that provides greater comfort and sturdiness.
AIR BOX
The airbox design guarantees optimum protection of the air filter against dirt, and maximum airflow for increased performance. Changing the Twin Air air filter in seconds and without tools has long been standard at KTM.
TANK
All models in the SX range are fitted with a new 7.5 liter lightweight polyethylene tank; it has been modified at the level of the internal thread of the cover and the cover itself, which closes more easily and with great reliability. The four-stroke motocross features the same fuel pump system as the four-stroke enduro models, which allows the optional installation of larger tanks available in the PowerParts catalog or on the enduro models..
HANDLEBAR
All SX models are fitted with a super robust Renthal Fatbar 827 tapered handlebar, the shape of which has been adapted to the demands of motocross. The proven KTM system allows the handlebars to be fixed in four different positions. In 2014, a large black / silver Renthal Crash Pad provides the rider with additional impact protection.
GRAPHICS
A new refined graphic design with clear lines underlines the uncompromising requirement of this modern off-road motorcycle.
WHEELS
At the wheels, lightweight CNC machined hubs along with premium Excel rims and black coated spokes with lightweight aluminum nipples ensure minimal weight for maximum stability. Pirelli Scorpion MX Mid Soft 32 tires shine with perfect grip and excellent performance.
BRAKES
High-tech Brembo brakes have long been standard on KTM off-road motorcycles with lightweight wave disc brakes for optimum braking performance. For the 2014 model year, there is a new brake housing with a new compensation reservoir, a smaller piston diameter, and a new lever with optimized kinematics. Thanks to this and the optimized brake pads, the performance and dosability of the front brake have been further improved significantly..
