The improvements are discreet in the Heritage range, less conspicuous than the Options 719 and more secure. The latest that the NineTs recover for 2020, the ASC traction control. This is now part of the standard equipment. Just like the Dynamic Brake Light grafted in 2019.
The love rating for BMW is not weakening. It must be said that the brand has something to satisfy all categories of bikers. High dose sport? The S 1000 RR transfers adrenaline without the need for an infusion. From the road in high voltage arsouille mode? The S 1000 R removes tar. Adventure in R 1200 GS, Grand Tourisme in R 1200 RT or K 1600 GTL, urban connected with C 650 scooters; in short, Behème is inescapable. And it’s not about to stop with the development of the Heritage range. The first milestone in this chapter, the 1200 Nine-T got off to a rocky start and intensified the craze for neo-retro. In less time than it takes to weld a frame, BM transforms the test, teases the preparations, picks up the nostalgic and draws the Scrambler version. A more marked breath of freedom, a welcome carefreeness, a country side that hits the mark, style to turn the heads of the uninitiated: she wants to please in beautiful neighborhoods.
The Scrambler. It is the machine which preceded the trail. It allowed to go everywhere, it had a quirky face, and it was the beginning of the adventure. With this version of the 1200 Nine-T, we believe it, and we want it. It’s calibrated right down to give the Boxer pepper and a little nutty taste. But do not confuse: it remains a roadster with modifications which situates it between the preparation and the machine to wander on the road and at the edge of the roads; not a motorbike ready to eat off the stony track. It doesn’t matter anyway! The effect is there, gripping, dry, powerful, and almost light. But does BMW only have to add raised exhausts and spoke rims to make the NineT a scrambler? No, it goes much further. First, note that spoke rims are optional. Better to take them right away because the original stick wheels are not the best to capture the spirit of this machine.
It is first of all the silhouette that takes hold of you. A moment of hesitation, situated between the workshop, the dealer and the song of a farm lost in the tobacco trees. Less muscular than the Nine-T, perhaps less premium but no less interesting, the Scrambler shares many elements of its sister and defends its specificities. First, this chestnut-colored saddle, which catches your eye and invites you to walk to the next cigar roller. Then the exhausts grab you as they clear the view of the rear rim. Then this front axle much less sporty. The inverted fork from the S 1000 RR and the 17-inch wheel are abandoned in favor of a classic 43 mm fork (without the house Telelever) embellished with protective bellows. Some axially mounted brake calipers, one 19 inch front wheel, no adjustment; this takes us to a very classic, almost basic dimension. And a good way to lower the price, because the Scrambler should be displayed at a more contained price, especially more reasonable, than that of the NineT.
Once caught, let’s remain lucid and look at what the machine offers. What to assert an identity? Without a doubt. BMW has planned it in this direction with a removable rear frame at the passenger level and a wiring harness compatible with various “trendy” accessories. The on-board network allows preparers to get excited on the grindstone without altering their handling of the bike.
The evening offers many ideas in the garage. The next day, impatience will be law. Once synchronized with the rider’s look (or vice versa), true meaning only takes shape when the thrilling kicks in..
The engine is still recent Bavarian history, but remains sufficiently “classic” to stick to the spirit of NineT. Hoses, fleet, water cooled, it would be indelicate. The flat air continues its career here. In every way similar to that of the neo-retro roadster, this block with 8 valves, double ACT, injection, etc…. differs only by a mapping adapted to Euro4 standards. Like that, he takes a deep breath from the top of his 110 horsepower at 7750 rpm. It is only the couple which took a blow of bramble in the stems: from 12.1 mkg, it drops to 11.8 mkg at 6000 revs. It remains consistent, always able to lift you with enthusiasm.
At first, it smells of steel; for its tube frame. The function is there, with the seriousness of a Bavarian part-cycle. For its 17-liter tank too, just to save a little more. Aluminum is noble, it’s more expensive, and it’s for the younger sister’s container. Also in this dictate of privileges, the brake shoes will be a little less efficient than those of the Nine-T. Pity ? Trappers will not find the high level that an S 1000 R can offer; but does a Scrambler necessarily have to wrinkle the road with every braking? A little less bite will not be bad depending on the terrain. Usage will prevail.
Later, subtly, the aluminum comes back. For the triple trees, the handlebars, the air intake cover, the plates fitting the saddle, the tank and the engine.
Then it smells of coziness. Almost helpfulness. The atmosphere is more relaxed. To do this, the handlebars are raised and brought closer to the pilot. As the saddle is provided with less padding, the seat is lower. The feet go down, move back a little, participate in the sympathy of the domain. Once installed, the pilot is in a more relaxed, natural, upright position, as if the weather was happy.
Finally, before leaving, we finish realizing the simplicity expressed with this new instrumentation. Basically, with a single circular dial, and the company of a needle to indicate the speed (because it is mandatory). No tachometer, no need; as if the important thing was to ride regardless of speed, relying on the life of the twin to know how to handle it. However, we are not in the 60s, and digital still manages to take hold somewhere. Occupying the bottom of the dial, a window indicates some information such as the mileage or the time. The Scrambler would make us forget tablets and processors ?
In the race for technology, BMW is not the last. Walking through the brand’s catalog, you can find a plethora of electronics: semi-active suspensions, hill start aid, traction control, driving modes, locks and keyless start, adaptive headlight in bends, shifter … etc. Enough to put a Microsoft programmer into a trance.
Except that the Nine-T Scrambler doesn’t care! But with a force. His thing is emotion and a snub to the arms race. We have already seen that he refuses the latest evolution of the Boxer engine. It is also satisfied with the legal minimum at the level of assistance. An ABS, enough to cash Euro4, a bit of a digital screen in the meter, and that’s it. What is the use of electronic debauchery? Did you water down the road?!? For the superfluous, you have to look at the accessories and style. But to consume the road, you need the beard, the shirt and Bluetooth…. ? Or a jacket and a pair of boots?!? Just in case, BM still offers ASC traction control as an option..
Announced by the Path 22 concept-bike, the BMW 1200 R Scrambler continues the offensive initiated by the NineT. The mouth instantly hits the mark, for a more affordable price and a more lively desire to dawdle. To really have fun and fully forge your leitmotif, a little tour through the options box is almost essential: Here are some elements that Behème should have installed as standard: spoked rims, off-road tires, headlight grille and engine guard. Result, the tradition is respected and will have to helmet more than expected at the dealership.
With this machine, the brand impeccably follows and even feeds fashion. The 1200 Scrambler will be a motorcycle of choice to offer its sensations. But don’t his customers above all seek to create a sensation? ?!?
