Under 1’37 at Le Mans, the Yart dominated on the 1st day, its opponents and the elements
Here we go again ! After eight months of hiatus, the riders of the EWC Motorcycle Endurance World Championship chased the clock yesterday during the first practice sessions of the 24 Hours of Le Mans 2020. Victorious in the last event at Sepang, the YART still dominates … Chronos.
The 43rd edition of the 24 Heures Moto officially started yesterday (Thursday) at 1 p.m. on the Bugatti circuit. A circuit as mythical as it is desert this year 2020, because of its course behind closed doors in order to fight against the spread of the coronavirus.
The Yamaha n ° 7 is in great shape! After the first official free practice session, the YART was the only machine to run under 1’37. By completing the 4.185 km of the Sarthois route in 1’36.879, the R1 was already a third of a second from the pole position signed in 2019 by the official S1000RR ERC.

We found the same crew at the head of a first qualifying session very disturbed by showers (see the rankings at the bottom of the article). The pilots with the blue armband had to drive on a drying track, the yellows took advantage of a perfectly dry tarmac and the reds had to take out the rain tires.
Karel Hanika (2nd in his session), Marvin Fritz (4th) and Niccolo Canepa (2nd) averaged 1’42.225: enough time to take first place, far ahead of the Ducati ERC n ° 6 driven by De Puniet , Da Costa, Rossi and Jezek. The Panigale V4R is fast … and enduring ?
Third in the n ° 1 Kawasaki SRC, Guarnoni, Nigon and Checa quickly adapted to their new set of tires. The reigning world champions were abandoned by Pirelli this summer and !
SERT, current leader of the 2019-2020 championship with 79 points, is in sixth position behind its main rivals in the provisional: the factory BMW team (64 points) and the Yamaha Wojcik Racing Team (48). As a reminder, YART is fourth in the world ranking with 43 points.
Ninth overall, the Yamaha RAC41 dominates the Superstock category, but by little: the Kawasaki n ° 24 of the BMRT does not concede to it more than a hundredth of a second (!) And the Yamaha n ° 66 of the OG Motosport team is at less than three tenths … The only Experimental machine on the board, the Metiss n ° 45, is right in the middle of the table (19 out of 39).
Note that YART also set the best time in night free practice last night (ranking below). Discreet until then, the Honda France FCC TSR n ° 5 team hoisted its new Fireblade in second position, ahead of the n ° 6 Panigale, the n ° 4 ZX-10R (Tati Beaujolais) and n ° 1, as well as the GSX -R1000R n ° 2.
The second qualifying session is scheduled this afternoon from 1 p.m. to 2:20 p.m. Meteo France is forecasting rare showers during this time slot … and the risk of hail the rest of the afternoon! Which team will pass the best between the drops to sign the pole ?
Drivers should expect a race that will also be disrupted by showers and even thunderstorms. Finally, maybe we are not so bad behind our computers? Stay connected !
