After 30 years of development, in 2015 we arrived at a motorcycle that looks completely different, but somehow the same.
30 years of Suzuki GSX-R
History of the Supersport series

30 years of Suzuki GSX-R – for the anniversary, important people from this Supersport series came together, with whom we talked about their highlights in 30 years.
"We worked day and night", tells us Tateshi Shimizu, who was the sub-project leader for the engine of the first Suzuki GSX-R 750 worked. Company boss Osamu Suzuki signed the development contract exactly one year before the launch of this GSX-R, which became the first real four-stroke superbike, and dictated to his engineers exactly what he wanted in the end. “100 HP and as little weight as possible was a must,” says Shimizu-san.

30 years of Suzuki GSX-R
History of the Supersport series
"The Suzuki GSX-R 1000 was a revolution"
“We were in constant contact with SERT in order to further develop the motorcycle,” says Shimizu-san and cannot completely hide his engineering disappointment that he had given up the ultra-light oil / air cooling for the reliability of the Suzuki GSX-R. Both then agree on the next important step: the “SRAD”. “Before that, every model came with more and more power, and we soon needed a model that also made this power drivable,” says Meliand. “With the frame of the 1996, we made a giant leap in the chassis and were on the road to victory.”
With the K1, the first superbike with a 1000 cubic four-cylinder, Suzuki made the leap in 2001. “The 1000 series was another revolution. Until then, every model was a successful evolution of the first Suzuki GSX-R, even the 1100 series that existed at the same time, ”Meliand comments on this milestone. “With the first GSX-R 1000, Suzuki created a pioneering sports motorcycle on which all models are based to this day – by the way, the guarantee of success for us in the Endurance World Championship, because despite the necessary tuning measures for a real racing motorcycle, we can to this day rely on a basis that has been tried and tested a million times. ”Accordingly, Dominique Meliand is also excited about the upcoming new GSX-R 1000 with lots of electronics and even more power.
