Starts with a new twin and a displacement of 2.6 liters Buell into the new season. Into the dragster season. At 117 km / h. You read that correctly: a top speed of 117 km / h. Just the piston. With a diameter of 130 millimeters, the piston reaches an average piston speed of 117 km / h or 32.67 meters per second at a maximum speed of 10,400 revolutions. Anyone who paid attention to the mechanics course knows two things: 1.) Normal engines have a critical mean piston speed of around 22 meters per second or a good 80 km / h. 2.) According to the modified formula, the twin must have a 98 millimeter bore. Both are true. The twin is built for the chassis based on RX1190 by Buell or EBR. High speeds, high compression
The key data, combined with an absurdly high compression of 14.5: 1, generate a torque of 240 Nm at 7,000 rpm and an output of 400 hp at 9,800 rpm in the two-valve engine. The red area of the twin starts at 10,400 revolutions per minute. Without ancillary units, this power plant weighs 99 kilos. Incidentally, the engine also has a brother with four cylinders for the chassis from Suzuki in the ProStock class.

118 octane and giant valves
With this high power density you won’t get very far with E-10 fuel. The engine only runs on 118 octane racing gasoline. The mixture finds its way through a single valve in the cylinder head, which is, however, an absurd 68 millimeters in diameter – the size of a piston in a 600cc four-cylinder from Honda. The exhaust valve measures 50 millimeters in diameter. The huge valves are controlled by two camshafts per cylinder head, which are driven by gear wheels. It should come as little surprise that the exhaust manifolds are over 50 millimeters in diameter.

400 hp, high speeds and huge combustion chambers also require a lot of fuel. The engine with double ignition consumes almost 600 milliliters of the racing fuel per race. Since the sprints are only 402 meters long, this results in a consumption of a good 149 liters per 100 kilometers. Thirsty. On the other hand: Since the racers only need 6.7 seconds to go 321 km / h, the 149 liters or 100 kilometers are reached after a good 18 minutes.

When you look at the price and the maintenance intervals of the new engine from Vance and Hines, it becomes clear: there is no mess in the dragster scene and anyone who finds a street motorcycle to be expensive only throws small change into a wishing well. The new twin costs $ 75,000. Naked without anything. The valve springs must be replaced after 10 to 12 starts and a complete overhaul is due after 20 to 25 starts. By the way: The engine can also be used with adjustments for the NHRA ProStock racers based on Harley-Davidson and Indian.
