Back to the Future

An unrecognized trendsetter – that was the Yamaha TDM when it was launched in 1991. Even the MOTORRAD editors did not agree on how to classify the new bike. Today you would say crossover. A look back into the future.

VPast: The French were to blame. At least tends to. They were looking for the best sometime in the 80s. The best motorcyclist of all sport classes. To do this, they strapped sports tires into their crossers and sent the pack into the lap: an asphalt track, supplemented by a section of terrain. Supermoto was born. But nobody knew that back then.

Yamaha TDM "interesting all-round talent"

The drafts flowed onto paper, Yamaha Japan nodded, and the two-stroke Yamaha TDR 250 stood there. The first shot wasn’t a direct hit. In 1991 it got better with the four-stroke TDM 850. The hour of birth of the high-volume crossover bike. But this category didn’t even exist back then. The two-wheeler community found it correspondingly difficult to classify. This was also the case with MOTORRAD tester Axel Westphal, who was the first to be able to examine the Yamaha TDM. His opinion on the 3VD type: “Interesting all-round talent.” There is little sexiness involved. Rather, the thought of fine rib underwear comes up. It is hygienically valuable and warms – but unsuitable as an electrifying pleasure amplifier. And the Yamaha TDM should make you want to open up a new way of formidable two-wheeler fun. missed the chance?

With Yamaha TDM and MT-09 Tracer over the Alb

Present: The year is 2015. The TDM listed Yamaha as a 900 in the range until 2012, after which it was over.
By the end of 2014 the Yamaha MT-09 Tracer appeared. Is she the legitimate successor? A round over the Swabian Alb should clarify that. Next to the Tracy, a TDM, built in 1997, growls (many thanks to Worner & Hirsch motorcycle service from Reutlingen for the loan). Connoisseurs know: type abbreviation 4TX, motor no longer as a real parallel twin with 360 degrees, but with a 270 degree crank pin offset for a pulsating V2 touch. The Yamaha TDM lived on engine donations. After the drilled out unit from the Super Tenere, the TRX was allowed to run as a two-cylinder dispenser. And their engine was really good for the universal mobile. Bring character into play. Tickled on an emotional level too. So don’t miss a chance. Tingling in the stomach and working carefree – that finally came together at TDM. For this requirement, the 850 from 1991 to 1995 was simply designed too evenly, too turbine-like.

With two cylinders, the Yamaha MT-09 Tracer is over. What remained was the use of the modular system. After all, not only did the MT-09 triplet go into the frame, but also large parts of the chassis. On this basis, the MT-09 becomes a new motorcycle. Free of excessive nervousness, now with confidence-inspiring stability and crisp steering precision. If the TDM could speak, it would immediately stop: “What’s new about that? That was one of my virtues more than 20 years ago. “Good, sorry, let’s go.

TDM over 20 pounds heavier than MT-09 Tracer

What is immediately noticeable: Everything fits ergonomically. With the old and the new. Okay, the special high handlebar from the Magura range on the Yamaha TDM is not much help when it comes to feeling for the front wheel. But otherwise? Even the 850 gives the pilot a relaxed bed on the bench. As if by themselves, the feet fall on the pegs. Well done, even then. This legacy continues seamlessly with the Yamaha MT-09 Tracer. It also offers a bit more sportiness, looks more filigree, more direct. The TDM feels more expansive, more massive. The modern age is also noticeable on the scales. Only at the 234 kilo mark does the pointer stop on the two-cylinder 4TX. The Tracer is over 20 kilos less. You can tell. And although the Yamaha TDM rolls on narrow pusher by today’s standards (110/80 ZR18 / 150/70 ZR18), it does not sweep through the curves as easily and above all with the same feedback as the Yamaha MT-09 Tracer. Anyone who looks back on a long two-wheeler career knows the Michelin Macadam. Even then, he needed a lot of temperature and was no rain god. The fact that he has been driving the country with the TDM for almost 15 years does not improve the performance.

For us that means: less sport, more touring. Thoughts wander. Prize question: When did the Yamaha TDM actually get the first model from the competition? The clouds whirl past, the trees on the roadside, which are more gray than green depending on the season, do the same – but the brain is on strike. We had to ponder for a long time. But back to the here and now.

Yamaha TDM already cost 9,813 euros in 2007

The Yamaha MT-09 Tracer sets the pace. Drives light-footed through all kinds of radii. Quickly inspires confidence. She can do something. Above all, they make virtues strong that the Yamaha TDM already knew. The chassis responds sensitively. It may not always react perfectly to every edge, but it spoils you with a lot of comfort. Those who are not in hot spur mode will like the arrangement. “I tell you,” interjects the TDM. Right. It was like that in the 90s. Elsewhere, the progress is more noticeable. The tracer provides information via the digital display, with the TDM classic round clocks are sufficient. Thanks to the electronics, the Tracer can do more: show more, choose driving modes and act more environmentally friendly. The 4TX consumed less than the 3VD, but around 5.5 liters always flowed through the carburetor. The Yamaha MT-09 Tracer takes 4.8 liters from the tank for 100 kilometers on country roads. That is good for your wallet and the environment. And the TDM. Because: With the Tracer, Yamaha has not only refined the argument for the crossover segment, but has finally brought the property into play at a favorable price. 9.595 euros are one word. A Yamaha TDM already cost 9813 euros in 2007.

It moves on in harmony with the Yamaha MT-09 Tracer, impressing with its still very entertaining, constantly thrilling engine. It just shakes noticeably at the bottom. From 2000 revs, however, it hangs wonderfully on the gas and willingly revs up. That is fun. The tracer drive spreads that anyway. Can do almost anything, can do almost anything. But remembering back then remains interesting. This is how the Yamaha TDM even succeeds in partially trumping the Tracer in terms of equipment: the adjustment of the spring tension at the rear by means of a quick adjustment – that is only offered by them.

Overall, the TDM does not seem old, it has remained refreshingly modern. The two bikes slowly roll out. The Yamaha TDM enjoys the evening after work, treats itself to a few liters of fuel and a nourishing bath. Our adult photo model has earned that. Finally, a quick look at the crossover poetry album, which also includes the Yamaha MT-09 Tracer. It’s good, better than TDM in everything and a worthy successor. But it still has to work out its place in crossover history. That will not be easy. Unlike in the past, there is now plenty of competition in the class up to 1000 cm³. The Yamaha TDM is calm and enjoying the late recognition.
