If you correctly interpret the sounds made by your motorcycle and take countermeasures in good time, you can possibly prevent worse things from happening – so it's worth listening carefully. 2Wheels presents possible causes for unusual noises.

BRAKES

Grinding and / or squeaking can always be heard when the brake disc does not rotate freely through the brake caliper. The simplest explanation is pollution, but oily, glazed or worn surfaces also make noise. If a brake piston does not return completely to its rest position or is completely stuck due to corrosion or defective sealing rings, this also causes unwanted noises.

TRANSMISSION

If it clicks or rattles while driving in a certain gear, then the relevant pair of gears is the culprit. If the rumble or rumble continues, the suspect is shaft or bearing. Howling can be heard when (primary) gears are worn. If the primary drive (i.e. the connection between the crankshaft and clutch) runs via a chain, wear and tear and a lack of tension can cause the chain to hit parts of the housing and make a noise. If, on the other hand, it rattles only when the clutch is pulled, the release bearing is defective.

SPRING ELEMENTS

Noises during compression do not have to be directly related to the fork. Incorrectly routed cables that rub against the paneling can be the culprit. Loose or broken fork innards, on the other hand, are the worst possible cause of noise. Loose screw connections (fork bridges, mudguards, wheel axles) are more often to blame. Systematic processing and correct tightening (with a torque wrench) usually help. Gargling or gurgling during compression and rebound also indicate a defective inner workings.

CARDAN / CHAIN

If the cardan bevel drive is worn, it will generate howling noises. If, on the other hand, it cracks while pushing, one of the bearings in the final drive is over; the universal joint can also be the cause. In the case of chain-driven machines, irregular rattling while driving reveals that the chain set (chain, pinion, sprocket) is worn out and ready to be replaced.

ENGINE

First check when noises become noticeably louder: oil level. A soft click from the cylinder head indicates that the valve clearance is too large. Chattering from the cylinder area can be caused by a worn out piston pin bearing. Regular knocking from the cylinder area indicates a defective connecting rod bearing. If there is a rumble in the crankcase, the crankshaft bearings are usually due. Rattling noises on engines with overhead camshafts are caused by too loose timing chains – their tensioners may be defective
