All Comparisons - Comparo Trails 1200: the R1200GS threatened by the Multistrada and the Super Tenere - When Ducati and Yamaha attack BMW ...

2010, year of big trails: Ducati and Yamaha have relaunched their Multistrada and Super Tenere to attack the benchmark of the segment, the BMW R1200GS. Will the Japanese and the Italian succeed in dislodging the German from its pedestal ? Comparative test.

When Ducati and Yamaha attack BMW…

Somewhat jealous, even irritated by the immense success that BMW meets with its GS across Europe and in particular in France, Ducati and Yamaha decided in 2010 to reinvest in the large trails segment. And not just any old way !

First of all, in order to compete – and beat? – the R 1200 GS, the two manufacturers have simply aligned themselves with its displacement: the Italian and Japanese engines both have 1200 cc. On the other hand, in terms of architecture, everyone has their own specialty…

The choice of the name of this new Yamaha model was straightforward: the "Super Tenere" – or Super T for close friends – rose from its ashes! The Paris-Dakar, "the real one", is no more, but the legend does persist … and the tuning forks firm would be wrong to deny it !

Less evocative, the name of Multistrada also emerged from the boxes this year. Ducati persists and signs in its concept of motorcycle "multiroutes" and "multitasking" … A recipe which succeeds wonderfully at BMW, but which has not yet found its balance with the Italians. Is the 1200 version the right one? ?

Regarding the engine, the Bologna firm of course retains an L-shaped architecture. Ducati has not skimped by grafting on its new trail the Testatretta which equips its Superbike 1198 and its "Super roadster" Streetfighter: will to have sport !

The presentations being made, it remains to discover these three motorcycles as a whole. Because the names and the engines are far from being the only distinctive elements of these three 1200 trails. A brief tour of these red, blue and gray motorcycles…
