All the Duels - Another idea of the roadster - Duel of spaghetti roadsters

Very similar in their design and philosophy, are the Aprilia Shiver 750 and the Ducati Monster 796 so much on the test? This is what Site invites you to discover by comparing these two Italian motorcycles: 100% Italian duel !

Spaghetti roadster duel

Without necessarily wanting to, Aprilia and Ducati this year launched on the medium-displacement roadster market two motorcycles very close to each other: the 2010 version of the Aprilia Shiver 750 and the younger Ducati Monster, called 796.

After the press launch in the spring of the new Shiver (read our) and our test of the "little" 696 two years ago (read our), the editorial staff of Site suspected, by opposing these two novelties, that the match would not would not be the easiest to arbitrate…

Because if these two motorcycles have many points in common on the technical level and covet the same clientele, they display different plastics and contain very distinct characters. Make way for a duel between two transalpine cousins…

Launched in 2007 in the mid-size roadster cage – the juiciest and bloodiest segment in France! – Aprilia Shiver has benefited from a slight update this year.

Aesthetically, Noale’s men wanted to give their "750" a more "racing" touch. The colors in particular are more punchy than on the old version, the plastic covers and the saddle have been redesigned, the original long footrest plate has been replaced by more conventional elements and the discs are now of the "petal" type..

From a mechanical point of view, the V-twin (90 °) injection and ride-by-wire controls with three maps to choose from (Rain, Sport and Touring) is renewed as is, as is the frame in two parts (steel trellis and aluminum plate), the aluminum swingarm, the two 320 mm brakes with radial calipers at the front and the 265 mm disc at the rear.

Two new products for 2010 clash

Only the suspension settings were finally revised compared to the "first version" Shiver. Objective of this modification: to make the new model more suitable to meet the demands of bikers enticed by the sporting aspect of this little sister of the Tuono 1000 !

The Ducati 796 also smells of arsouille: the native of Bologna is equipped with its inevitable tubular frame, but it is relayed by an aluminum element – a bit like on the Aprilia. There are also radial brake calipers and an inverted 43 mm fork (Showa for the 2010 model and Marzocchi from 2011, read).

The 796 also borrows the L-shaped twin of the 696, but extends its stroke by 8.8 mm (bore x stroke of 88 x 66 mm) in order to benefit from a decidedly very fashionable displacement (803 cc) which brings it closer to BMW F800R, Yamaha FZ8 or future Triumph Tiger (read in particular).

The new Ducati, however, differs greatly from the Shiver by its rear single-sided arm – that of the Monster 1100 -, its finish a little more polished and its look, more distant from those of the Japanese compared to the Aprilia. That said, the pots of the Monster are not unlike those of the Yamaha MT-01 or MT-03 !

From this point of view, the Shiver seems more elegant with its beveled exhausts. From the front, the Ducati, with its optics placed low, its engine devoid of a large radiator and its visible frame, is more compact and stocky while the Aprilia is more "big bike". But on the handlebars, what does it look like ?
