Peugeot Django 125 scooter test: neo-retro-work-sleep
Unveiled at the Eicma 2013 Show, the Django will finally land in Peugeot dealerships. Skilfully blending retro and modern, development in France and production in China, this new scooter has just been presented in Paris.. MNC was there: test.
Peugeot presents its … its neo-retros !
Expected for eleven months by fans of the neo-retro genre (more and more numerous in France, particularly in Paris), the new Peugeot Django scooter will arrive in dealerships "end of October / beginning of November for the 125 cc version, in April / May for the 50 cc 2-stroke and 4-stroke", predicts Peugeot. But the scooter should not disappoint…
Django 125: availability, versions and pricing |
|
At least, this is what Site deduces from the reactions of the first people to see the scooter "for real in the street": onlookers on the avenue de la Grande Armee invariably turn around and sometimes stop for a long time in front of the dozen or so. ” copies assembled in front of Peugeot’s Paris headquarters.
It must be recognized that this brand new scooter has a certain charm. "The" all new scooters, we should rather write, since the Django is available in four different versions: Heritage, Evasion, Sport and Allure.
"The "heritage" model is not present at this press launch", warns Frederic Bart, press manager at Peugeot Scooters. But future customers can rest assured: this basic Django, displayed at an attractive price and at the psychological threshold of € 2,999, will be available at the same time as its three brothers.
In its color "Milky White"- let’s say" cream ", in good French -, the Django Heritage is, as its name suggests, the one that comes closest to Peugeot’s main source of inspiration: the S57, a copy of which has escaped of the museum to pose alongside his descendants.
"For several years, the demand for a retro scooter was very important in our network", rightly underlines Christelle Huchette, product manager (of Django!) at Peugeot Scooters:"our dealers and our customers rightly consider that we are perfectly legitimate in this niche".
"With our style office – currently composed of 7 people and based near Montbeliard – we therefore went to the "Peugeot Adventure Museum" and we immersed ourselves in the brand’s products: old scooters of course, but also cars, tools, the famous pepper mills, etc..", continues our interlocutor.
During this visit, the development team would have particularly fallen in love with the 402 prepared by bodybuilder Emile Darl’mat. And how we understand them! It is therefore no coincidence that the Sport model of the Django (the one with the "sporty" rear shell, but delivered as standard with the passenger seat) is adorned with a "France Blue"corresponding to the color worn by French cars in competition at the beginning of the last century.
For its walk in Paris, Site chooses the Evasion model which particularly caught the eye with its two-tone color (white / red, in this case), its white rims and matching tires, its nose screen and its luggage rack … on which we will not venture to get anything stuck !
The two colored bands accentuate the long and low appearance of the machine. The stitching of the saddle – in two parts like on old scoots, with retractable passenger footrest – and the small chrome cap of the headlight give this Django a delightfully vintage air..
Like the Sport and Allure versions, "our" Django Evasion has the attractive LED "U" light signature on its grille and benefits from the SBC (Synchro Braking System) combined brake system..
Two elements that the Heritage does not include, and resulting in a price increase of 300 euros for Sport / Evasion (i.e. € 3,299) and of 500 euros for the Allure equipped as standard with a top-case (€ 3,499 so). "Ah but it’s not expensive !", launches us at the red light the intrigued driver of a retro … Italian scooter !
The surprise effect is mainly due to the fact that the Django is well finished: the paints seem of good quality, the plastics and body rods are perfectly aligned, the chrome parts (shiny or satin depending on the version) are tastefully arranged and the small touches of rubber in certain places (luggage rack, floor …) tend to prove that the product is successful.
Entirely designed and developed in France, the latest Peugeot is produced "in our factory in Jinan, China, where the New Vivacity, Speedfight 3 and Kisbee are already built. We were thus able to stay within the prices we had set for ourselves", explains the Django product manager..
"The level of quality achieved by our team in China is satisfactory", continues Christelle Huchette."The Django does not incorporate very advanced technology, unlike the Metropolis, Satelis, Geopolis and e-Vivacity which continue to be produced in Mandeure.". And then you never know, if the Django were to seduce the Chinese – and Indian (read -) clientele, it would be on the front line !
But back to our test and our red light…
