BMW Test Drives: The 2015 S1000RR in All Its Forms !
Withdrawn from the World Superbike for two years, the BMW racing department supports numerous teams around the world. MNC had the chance to test six S1000RRs entered in WSBK, BSB, IDM, TT, EWC and South Africa (!) On the Valencia circuit (Spain).
S1000RR International German Championship
Work or replacement of the cylinder head, camshaft and pistons "recingue", crankshaft and lightened bolts … The possibilities of grabbing weight (176 kg) and power (200 hp only according to the technical sheet?!) awarded by the German Superbike Championship are more numerous.
On this S1000RR flanked by Markus Reiterberger’s n ° 21, the modifications made to the engine are felt on the handlebars, especially when the needle of the tachometer – original, it – turns beyond 10,000 rpm and flirts with the red zone indicated 4250 laps above. It pulls on the arms !
This time on slick tires, the BMW is even more lively. But the sportier profile of the racing Pirelli is not the only factor responsible: the driving position, more exclusive than on the South African machine, tilts the pilot clearly forward..
More radical and more powerful, this little bomb prepared by the Van Zon-Remeha-BMW team requires more attention. On the other hand, it spares its pilot a little more in the straight line: the screen much higher than the one delivered as standard allows it to be completely isolated from the wind..
On curves, the BMW HP Race injection settings (ignition and free ECU in IDM) seem finer to us than on the original S1000RR. The go-around is particularly smooth, which allows you to carefully keep your trajectory.
Being adapted to a forecastle of 1.82 m and 70 kg, this motorcycle should have pleased MNC and his pilot of 1.80 m and 72 kg. Alas, to be completely frank, the curved handlebars of the German machine, its saddle and its high-placed footrests destabilized us during our session..
Unable to find his marks on this bike – yet very well designed, how its 11 victories in 14 races contested in IDM 2015 prove it! -, Le Journal moto du Net failed to run clean enough to properly analyze the work of the suspensions.
However, the mere mention of the Ohlins brand and its components (TTX25 at the front and TTX36 at the rear) is enough to make it clear that this S1000RR is remarkably well suspended. Braking, meanwhile, remains with the original Brembo calipers. No – bad – surprise, therefore.
