As the name “Aprilia eSR1” was recently protected as a word mark by the European Patent Office, we speculated on an e-scooter.

Aprilia brings electric scooters
eSR1 turns out to be an e-scooter

The Aprilia eSR1 is unfortunately not an electric scooter with the drive of the E-Vespa, but a foldable electric scooter, which will be available from January for 659 euros.

A law firm that works for the Italian two-wheeler giant Piaggio had the word mark eSR1 protected by the European patent office, which is why we speculated on a new electric scooter from Piaggio at the beginning of December 2020. The e-scooter could have made use of the technology of the Vespa Elettrica and, optically, could have been less retro and more sporty. Not even close. What Aprilia now presented with the eSR1, turns out to be an electric scooter.

The Vespa Elettrica is available in versions with 45 km / h and 70 km / h top speed.

Many an e-scooter will be happy, we are rather disappointed. Not because we have something against e-scooters, but because we were looking forward to an Aprilia e-scooter in the 45 km / h and 70 km / h speed classes. We speculated on an engine output similar to that of the Vespa Elletrica: 3.5 and 3.6 kW respectively (the peak output is uniformly four kW). The 4.2 kw / h battery of the electric Vespa enables ranges of up to 100 kilometers. However, it also costs 6,250 euros..

We were hoping for an electric version of the Aprilia SR – with the electric drive technology of the E-Vespa.

The Aprilia eSR1 electric scooter costs 659 euros and will be available from January 20, 2021. The foldable e-scooter is powered by a brushless 350 W motor. The motor, in turn, can be fed by a 280 Wh battery, which should provide a range of 30 kilometers per charge. The battery can be removed for charging and – if available – exchanged for a full battery.

10-inch wheels with tubeless tires, the frame made of magnesium alloy as well as the electric brake on the front wheel and the disc brake on the rear should ensure safety and driving comfort on the Aprilia eSR1. There are also LED lights on the front and rear as well as the 3.5-inch LCD display on the handlebars.

On the subject “Safety and Brakes” At this point we refer again to our large comparison test of e-scooters. Even if the models are no longer entirely fresh, their braking systems and the safety problems resulting from the construction can still be taken as exemplary.

Conclusion

The drive technology for a full-blown e-scooter based on the Aprilia SR would be ready with the Vespa Elettrica. In addition, an electric SR would appeal to a completely different audience. With the eSR1, Aprilia is jumping on the last mile train, which is booming. Understandable, yes, we are still disappointed.
