The Harley sling chain / U-lock kit gets top marks for security. This is for taking with you to the biker meeting
Part too bulky, however.

Light and shadow: an almost unbreakable lock – combined with a slack chain as a weak point. The Hartmann lock combination is cheap, but not good.
Verdict: satisfactory.

Mega safe, but also mega heavy at over seven kilos! Top marks for security, but the handling of Kryptonite’s Padlock plus Legend Chain is mediocre.

Kryptonite’s cheaper Evolution Series 4 does not have to hide from more expensive products with the handy 1016 Integrated Chain, because it offers a high level of security.

Super security. But the Nemesis Oxford combination is not exactly handy. Annoying touring, but solid protection for backyard parkers.

The chain-lock combination from infactory is one thing above all: super cheap. And she looks safe. But it is not, because cracking is just an easy finger exercise for professionals.
Verdict: sufficient.

The big advantage of the folding lock: when folded, it is hardly larger than a brake disc lock and more variable than a bracket. Trelocks FS 500 Toro is a good compromise.
Verdict: good.

The Trelock PK 515/100 armored cable does not offer the security of fat chains, but it can only be cracked with heavy equipment. And remains very handy.

As a chain lock, the Trelock BC 515 is very cleverly designed. The full 110 cm length can be used, the handling is great and the weight is not excessive.

The bracket 1500 HB by Burg-Wachter looks like cheap hardware store goods with a lot of ugly plastic, but it has it all behind the ears. In addition, light and compact.

… how to use this. With bolt cutters or diagonal cutters this may not be that complicated, but it is more difficult to acquire and use unlocking tools such as jigglers, handpick sets and electric picks (in the previous picture, top right), which are actually only sold to specialists such as locksmiths.

26 motorcycle locks put to the test
Which system is best?

In the comparison test, 26 motorcycle locks didn’t have much to laugh about, after all, any anti-theft device can be cracked with the right tool. But which system is best to optimally secure the motorcycle?

Break the massive Harley lock with a power cutter? The spectacle lasts a good two and a half minutes, then the chain is through. A chain with massive links and a weight that would be appropriate for strength training.

In this test of motorcycle locks, however, the cut-off machine as a last resort for a theft was only used to better classify the material thickness and quality.

The Harley lock that was blown up in the picture was previously dealt with using all other – more likely – theft methods.

This is also what the unlocking experts from A. Wendt in Bergheim near Cologne, which MOTORRAD brought on board for the test, say. “The perpetrators are specifically looking for locks with which they are already familiar, and as a rule do not try to get on a motorcycle at random,” explains Josef Schumacher, a technician at Wendt and an expert on the scene.

Conclusion

Buyers of brake disc locks should be told: Better to spend a few euros more than afterwards without a motorcycle. Inexpensive motorcycle locks are attractive as take-away items, but they hardly make sense because they only get a tired smile from thieves. To be on the safe side, the motorcycle should be firmly connected anyway. Whether with a bracket, folding lock, chain or armored cable is a matter of taste.

In this test, the comparatively light, integrated chains and armored cables were convincing as all-rounders. In order to optimally secure the moped in the car park at home, however, the following applies: A lot helps a lot!

Abus Granit Detecto X Plus 8077.

Handling: Due to the rather high weight, the handling is a bit more difficult when attaching something built-up, and the loud alarm may be triggered unintentionally. The locking system does not fit every brake disc, but overall the lock is very compatible. The lock fits exactly into the high-quality textile bag with zipper and can then be stowed away nicely anywhere.

Price: 169.95 euros

MOTORRAD verdict: very good

Hartmann brake disc lock.

Handling: The bracket can be removed completely, which makes it easier to attach and lock it to the brake disc. Sometimes, however, the bracket only engages forcefully. The opening gap is sufficiently dimensioned for almost all brake disc types. The textile bag is rather cheaper, but still practical. The lock can be easily accommodated anywhere.

Price: 34.95 euros

MOTORRAD verdict: very good

Abus Victory 68 Roll Up

Nice and small and relatively light, but a tough guy: The Abus Victory 68 is not exactly cheap, but a high-quality and highly secure lock.

Abus Victory 68 Roll Up

Handling: The attachment is sometimes a bit fiddly because of the rotating lock, but with a little practice (almost) every pane is quickly blocked. The bolt does not fit through if the brake disc recesses are very narrow. In the robust protective bag with Velcro straps, the very compact lock can also be easily attached directly to the motorcycle.

Price: 92.95 euros

MOTORRAD verdict: very good

Abus Element 285

Handling: The thin metal keys are not very durable, and the locking mechanism was often very clumsy in the test. However, the lightweight lock can usually be easily attached to different brake discs. Cheaply made signal cable – nice bonus. The second lightest lock in comparison can easily be tucked away in any pocket. A simple transport bag is included

Price: 32.95 euros

Abus Sledg 77

Handling: Attachment and locking works flawlessly by means of a slide with locking bolts. The non-slip, sheathed body lies comfortably in the hand, and the warning spiral cable is easy to attach. Fits many, but not all, brake discs. Transport bag, very compact shape, there is nothing to complain about. A little too heavy for a trouser or jacket pocket.

Price: 136.95 euros

MOTORRAD verdict: very good

Handling: Fits well into the various perforations in the brake discs of various motorcycle models. The locking mechanism works perfectly, the keys are easy to hold. The slim shape of the lock even allows it to be carried in comparatively small jacket pockets.

Price: 90.50 euros

MOTORRAD verdict: very good
