If you look at the new sales of the 600 super sports cars, disillusionment spreads. Nothing works, nobody buys these things. We have the reasons for this in one Extra items clarified. Apparently these deplorable circumstances also produce something good. Because what does not want to go over the counter in the dealers’ halls changes hands all the more frequently on the used market.

Honda CBR 600 RR

600 series super sports car used overview

Honda CBR 600 RR as a used motorcycle.

In the Honda CBR 600 RR the two “Honda virtues” balance and reliability are combined. Like the Fireblade among superbikes, the 600 series has long been considered the most solid motorcycle in the field in the Supersport class. Thanks to its comparatively less stressful ergonomics, not a few even said it was suitable for everyday use. Don’t stop reading now, because the little RR can also do speed, as Wolfgang Harbusch from Honda Wellbrock reports. He drives a completed CBR 600 RR race at Art Motor, and quite far ahead. “After they saw what was going on with the thing, five of my friends bought one too,” says Harbusch. He still sees the Honda’s greatest strengths in its already mentioned driveability and reliability. The motorcycle is very balanced and therefore the perfect device to conjure up a steep learning curve on the racetrack. “Earlier models still had occasional problems with the timing chain tensioner, but since the PC40 from 2007 I have not known any teething problems or the like.” With used CBRs, the long-time Honda dealer has no concerns about passing the machine on to the customer, including the guarantee.

MOTORCYCLE market: Used Honda CBR 600 RR

ABS weighs ten kilograms

For the circuit, Wolfgang Harbusch recommends a machine built from 2007 onwards with the extremely well-functioning electronic steering damper HESD. Time chasers on the Kringel better opt for the ABS-free CBR, because the stutter brake hits the total weight with ten kilos. If you want to stay with the music for racing, sooner or later you have to worry about the engine power and overhaul the cylinder head. Otherwise, the Honda is subject to its competitors purely in terms of performance. Compression, camshafts, valve timing, exhaust and ECU are the points of contact that need to be addressed in order to gain strength. Incidentally, Harbusch’s winning CBR has a stable 133 hp on the rear wheel.

Kawasaki ZX-6R / 636

Kawasaki ZX-6R / 636 as a used motorcycle.

Since 2002 it has been allowed to Kawasaki be a little more now and then. The Kawasaki ZX-6R was also offered with 636 cm³ and then again only with 599 cm³, currently it has 636 cm³ again. Although this increase collides with the Supersport regulations (which is why there is still a homologation model with 599 cc), private drivers can only be pleased with the good pulling power of the 636 engine. On top of that, the Kawasaki ZX-6R from 2013 together with the MV Agusta F3 is the only one among the 600s to have traction control.

ZX600P is the affordable ZX-6

The big annoyance is the high prices for more recent models. “The Ninja 636 is therefore a grandfather clock in the shop,” explains Karsten Bartschat from the Luchow Bike Shop. If you want a cheap ZX-6R, you should look around for the Kawasaki ZX600P model from 2007 to 2008. At that time, Kawasaki sold the new machines at a favorable price, which attracted a number of interested parties and accordingly made the motorcycle appear frequently on the used market. With this ninja in particular, however, it is important to ensure that the recall was carried out because of leaky valve covers. Some Kawasaki ZX-6R still suffer from too weak timing chain tensioners. In addition, Karsten Bartschat reports high mechanical reliability. When tuning, he advises a suitable accessory system including an air filter as well as reprogramming the original ECU. Machining the engine would often be disproportionate to the costs.

Suzuki GSX-R 600

600 series super sports car used overview

fact

Suzuki GSX-R 600 as a used motorcycle.

Life and work of the Suzuki GSX-R 600 can be divided into the era before and after the year of construction 2006. The K6 was both visually and technically successful and retired the previous, much clunkier design. From now on, extensive changes made the engine more powerful and significantly more compact. The minimalist stub exhaust was an aesthetic revolution and fit perfectly into the appearance of the clearly slimmed-down chassis. In addition to an anti-hopping clutch, useful gadgets such as gear indicators and three-way adjustable footrests were on board. The smallest Gixxer from model type K6 can be found in a decent number on the used market thanks to a strong fan base. Just like the Honda CBR 600 RR, the Suzi is a relatively problem-free super athlete, which Denis Hertrampf can confirm. Many GSX-Rs have already passed through the hands of the Suzuki tuner from Nordhorn, and he describes the 600 series as a rock-solid vehicle with an “Everybodys-Darling attitude”.

All used offers: Suzuki GSX-R 600

Chassis revision by Hertrampf

Your motor delivers nice torque in the middle and is not quite as pointed as that of the YZF-R6. Even ergonomically, it is Honda-like dignified. With a closer look, you stumble across two points on the otherwise white Suzi vest: Far back in 2002 there was a problem with titanium valves tearing off, which was due to the supplier at the time. In addition, at the end of 2013, Suzuki called all GSX-Rs from the production period December 3, 2003 to June 20, 2013 back to the workshops because of possible corrosion in the brake circuit. In the course of this, the master brake cylinder of the front wheel was replaced. In terms of top performance, the Suzuki GSX-R 600 has remained unchanged since 2006. Up to the current generation, the bike has been revised considerably, for example it has lost a lot of weight. In order to make such a device economically ready for the race track, Denis Hertrampf lists a chassis revision, the installation of a racing fairing, steel braided lines, slip-on silencers (BOS, Akrapovič, Yoshimura) and a set of decent slicks as a basis. At the top there is of course only one limiting factor: money.

Yamaha YZF-R6

fact

Yamaha YZF-R6 as a used motorcycle.

Again the year 2006. Yamaha launched a completely redesigned R6 with the type code RJ11, which was heavily influenced by racing. With this ultra-short stroke they landed a big coup, because since then Yamaha has been considered the manufacturer with the most toxic 600 burner in the model range. No other machine in this class can turn the Yamaha YZF-R6 keep up. The YCCT system (Yamaha Chip Controlled Throttle), an electronic throttle grip, also made its debut in the RJ11.

All used offers: Yamaha YZF-R6

RJ15 (from 2008) in terms of durability in front

In terms of durability, however, tuner Dominik Klein advises Yamaha YZF-R6 RJ15, which was offered from 2008. “After a certain amount of time, the RJ11 was still prone to play in the crankshaft bearing and connecting rod bearing damage could occur. On machines with these handicaps, which also lay in the gravel bed one or the other time, the engine would sometimes rev up. However, these problems no longer exist since the RJ15, ”says Klein. As a care tip, it only points out that you must use high-quality oil such as the Motul V300. He also strongly advises against purchasing an imported model from England or Italy. Often these are accident machines, some of which are rebuilt several times and then resold as accident-free. The motto is therefore better to buy a German model with 30,000 kilometers, a complete checkbook and traceable history. Strictly speaking, this principle applies to all motorcycles presented here.

Options for tuning the Yamaha YZF-R6 from model type RJ11 offers the optimization of the air flow (removal of the restrictors in the inflow area) in addition to the installation of a complete system from Akrapovič or Arrow. Including coordination via the Powercommander or the RapidBike module, Dominik Klein gets ten to twelve more horsepower out.

MV Agusta F3 675

MV Agusta F3 675 as a used motorcycle.

Not that long ago, MV went back to its own history and brought out the construction drawings from that time. Out came the MV Agusta F3 675, which has done really well in the Supersport World Cup so far. The production model can score outstandingly in some disciplines. The ultra-short-stroke three-cylinder of the F3 turns 1000 rpm higher than that of the Triumph Daytona and cracks violently in the upper speed range. The stiff chassis (Marzocchi / Sachs) is a dream on the racetrack and the whole chassis, despite the small wheelbase, is a role model in terms of stability.

MOTORCYCLE market: Used MV Agusta F3 675

Problem electronics coordination

Let’s get to the horse’s foot: electronics. Although the MV Agusta F3 675 the full package of electronic throttle, multi-level traction control, ABS (from model year 2014) and automatic gearshift on board, but the worm is in the coordination. In the past, the throttle response in the lower speed range was too harsh, and the control behavior of the TC was often incomprehensible. Furthermore, it is difficult to get the constant speed jerk under control, as Armand Mottier from Micron Systems reports. He has already set up two F3s for the PS-TunerGP and says that the other electronic inconsistencies are actually easy to fix.

He recommends flashing the original control unit, which experience has shown works better than the updates from the MV dealer. Mottier also installed a traction control from GripOne on its MVs – it works plug & Play and works optimally according to the tuner. Unfortunately, due to the few F3s in circulation, there is hardly any experience with the machine. Most owners imagine the MV Agusta F3 675 but rather in the living room than to take part in race training.

Triumph Daytona 675 R as a used motorcycle.

If you don’t want to know anything about speed-hungry row fours, you might find what you’re looking for with the guys from Hinckley. The robust three-cylinder offers a fuller center thanks to larger individual cubic capacities and does not have to be pushed into the speed orbit quite as brutally – in terms of character, the Triumph represents Daytona 675 represents the antithesis of the Japanese fours, so to speak.

All articles about the Triumph Daytona 675

Better to use thicker oil

Dietmar Franzen from Sport Evolution won the IDM title together with Arne Tode at the Triumph Daytona 675 in 2008, so he knows a lot about bikes. In his opinion, the machine has always improved a bit in terms of performance and durability with the newer model years. The engine of the current model is also much smoother and a little rounder than the older triples. Nevertheless, he cannot report any problem cases or regularly occurring “ailments” over all years of construction. It is important, however, that an elderly British woman is generally well-groomed, ideally in its original condition. A Daytona is closer to a Ducati than to a Honda. So be careful with “revamped” 675s. Less knowledgeable “tuners” like to increase the engine power by increasing the maximum speed, which can cause bearing damage. The professional also recommends using a thicker oil. “The Triumph is a bit sensitive in this regard. We use the 15-60 from Motorex and overfill a bit, but the Motul V300 works the same, ”says Franzen.

In order to get over 130 hp on the bike, the Triumph Daytona 675 also requires the complete program of engine processing, exhaust (Arrow and Remus work well on models with an underseat system), mapping and fine-tuning on the periphery. Owners of a current model benefit from the experience from the T-Cup: The Bodis manifold specially made for the Street Triple R also fits the Daytona and brings a small increase in performance.
