Results of the MOTORRAD readers’ choice

An unbelievable 51,333 readers took part in the MOTORRAD readers’ poll 2021! Now we reveal the winners in 10 categories.

Stefan Kaschel,

Dina Dervisevic

In this article:

  • Tourer / sports tourer
  • athlete
  • Chopper / cruiser
  • Enduros / supermotos
  • Crossover
  • Naked bikes
  • Modern classics
  • Beginners
  • 125cc
  • Scooter

You dear MOTORRAD readers have chosen your favorites from 204 candidates. And the result is damn significant, because after all 51,333 of you voted – that is impressive. The result: quite a bit of blue and white, quite a bit of orange with hints of Great Britain, Japan and Italy.

Tourer / sports tourer

That category is – well, difficult. Because it is not clearly defined. Motorcycle worlds gape between touring tourers and sporty sports tourers, as can easily be seen on the podium. BMW R 1250 RT and KTM 1290 Super Duke GT – there is probably hardly anyone who vacillates between these two. Motorcycle travelers ride RT, motorcycle hurries take the Super Duke, that’s that. But as always in life, uncompromising comes at a price. At the top is one that harmoniously combines both worlds – the BMW R 1250 RS. R stands for travel, S for sport.

  1. BMW R 1250 RS
  2. KTM 1290 Super Duke GT
  3. BMW R 1250 RT
  4. Ducati Supersport / S
  5. Kawasaki Ninja 1000 SX

athlete

Compromise? Not in this class. Here it is called R for Racing – and if the number of R in the name had its way, the new Fireblade would be set. Five times the R in the model name: It is surprising that it is only enough for fifth place. Just like the victory of the noble M version of the BMW S 1000 RR over the brute Ducati Panigale V4 R. The fact that both brands also have two more irons in the top 5 raises the question of the competition in orange. So far you have to be a MotoGP rider to get circuit material from Mattighofen.

  1. BMW M 1000 RR
  2. Ducati Panigale V4 R
  3. BMW S 1000 RR
  4. Ducati Panigale V4 / S / SP
  5. Honda CBR 1000 RR-R Fireblade / SP

Chopper / cruiser

In the middle the duck is fat, says Triumph. And with the 2.3-liter triple, it packs a unique motor between the mighty wheels. Not even the R 18 with the equally unique 1800 boxer can keep up. And the rest? Tackled, which is particularly surprising with the series winner from earlier times, the Ducati Diavel 1260.

  1. Triumph Rocket 3 R / GT
  2. BMW R 18 / Classic
  3. Ducati Diavel 1260 / S
  4. Triumph Bonneville Bobber / Black
  5. Ducati XDiavel S / Black Star

Enduros / supermotos

Seriously, we’ve been thinking about a class change for the R 1250 GS. But where? Tourer / sports tourer – wins it easily. Crossover – she wins even more. Naked bikes – ditto! So it stays where it is. Hello, surprise: The new Ducati Multistrada V4 has started to catch up and is light-footed on the heels of the class queen with a clear double-digit vote.

  1. BMW R 1250 GS / Adventure
  2. Ducati Multistrada V4 / S / S Sport
  3. Yamaha Tenere 700
  4. Honda CRF 1100 L Africa Twin / Adventure Sports
  5. Moto Guzzi V85 TT

Crossover

Something’s moving in the long-legged sports all-rounder category: The superior previous year’s winner BMW S 1000 XR (+ 6.7) and the sharpened fun bike Ducati Hypermotard 950 / SP (+ 7.3) received even more reader approval than in 2020. Yamaha’s completely redesigned all-purpose weapon Tracer 9 / GT also scores highly with readers and lands in third place with double-digit values. Notable successes also for the BMW F 900 XR and Triumph Tiger Sport – they pushed the two Ducatis Multistrada 950 and 1260, which were placed last year, out of the top 5.

  1. BMW S1000 XR
  2. Ducati Hypermotard 950 / SP
  3. Yamaha Tracer 9 / GT
  4. BMW F 900 XR
  5. Triumph Tiger Sport

Naked bikes

The Austrian power bike continues to expand its supremacy, but the strong Ducati Streetfighter V4 / S flexes its muscles and takes off in the readers’ favor – from zero to second, wafer-thin behind the KTM 1290 Super Duke R. The rather moderate BMW R 1250 R. continues to grow in popularity and displaces the very sporty Aprilia Tuono V4 1100 RR / Factory from third place. The completely new, refined BMW S 1000 R also reached the class target and finished fifth.

  1. KTM 1290 Super Duke R.
  2. Ducati Streetfighter V4 / S
  3. BMW R 1250 R.
  4. Aprilia Tuono V4 1100 RR / Factory
  5. BMW S 1000 R.

Modern classics

And another class in which no BMW or KTM is at the top. The all-round successful Z 900 RS in the style of the Kawasaki Z 1 defies the retro boxers and is the only representative of Nippon with a class win. Remarkable: The radiance of the BMW R nineT models is unbroken, although the sales figures are falling. The wonderfully down-to-earth Royal Enfields are among the top 5 for the first time.

  1. Kawasaki Z 900 RS / Cafe
  2. BMW R nineT / nineT Pure
  3. BMW R nineT Scrambler
  4. MV Agusta Superveloce 800
  5. Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 / Continental GT 650

Beginners

KTM’s biting young duke as king of the readers’ hearts: The single-cylinder bike 390 Duke lands again in first place, with an even clearer lead than the year before. The Honda all-rounders CB 500 F and CBR 500 R as well as the crossover version CB 500 X are also gaining popularity. And the KTM 390 Adventure moves in front of the arch-rival BMW G 310 R / GS.

  1. KTM 390 Duke
  2. Honda CB 500 F / CBR 500 R
  3. Honda CB 500 X
  4. KTM 390 Adventure
  5. BMW G 310 R / GS

125cc

There is little movement in the youngster category: almost everything is the same as regards the order of the models in terms of the popularity of the readers. Above all here again KTM with the 125 Duke, followed by the classy Aprilia RS 125 / GP Replica, the cute Honda Monkey and the entry-level naked bike Honda CB 125 R. the family stays: Yamaha’s MT-125 has replaced the fully disguised sister YZF-R 125 in the favor of the electorate.

  1. KTM 125 Duke
  2. Aprilia RS 125 / Replica
  3. Honda Monkey 125
  4. Honda CB 125 R.
  5. Yamaha MT-125

Scooter

She is an absolute hit. Regardless of whether it is in the registration statistics for 2020 or in the MOTORRAD readers’ poll: the large Vespa GTS Super 300 is far ahead of the competition. The evergreen from Italy was even able to extend its lead compared to the previous year’s result. New in the field of pursuers, however, are Yamaha’s TMax Tech Max, Honda Forza 750, and even the little Vespa sister makes it into the top five.

  1. Vespa GTS Super 300 hpe
  2. BMW C 650 Sport / 650 GT
  3. Yamaha TMax Tech Max
  4. Honda Forza 750
  5. Vespa Primavera 125
