Understatement, also from the rear: a fat six-cylinder is working here. Upper class: suitcase with central locking.

Ideal for motorcycle trips
BMW has been building great six-cylinders for a long time – for cars. But it wasn’t until 2011 that the Munich-based company transferred this concept to two wheels with the BMW K 1600 GT and K 1600 GTL: The K 1600 series redefines motorcycle travel.

Imagine: finally at home after a hard day’s work. Make yourself comfortable on the sofa, stretch your arms, turn on the radio – and drive off. Welcome to the world of super tourers! If traveling, then with all the pipapo, that’s the motto of a motorcycle class that is still not better represented by anyone than by BMW’s K-model series in the Gran Turismo versions.

With a cylinder bank inclined by 55 degrees, aluminum bridge frame, Duolever front wheel suspension and Paralever cardan single-sided swing arm, the 1600 model is outwardly similar to its predecessor, the K 1300 GT, but ultimately it is in a completely different league. The BMW K 1600 is a rolling superlative. The six-cylinder delivers full power in every situation, but without riot and with a silky soft character – a new dimension of sovereignty.
Handy and accurate despite its heavy weight
Numerous equipment packages, perfect ergonomics for driver and front passenger, well thought-out luggage systems. And yet very easy to use and above all: easy riding. In addition, there is a wonderfully smoky bass from the six-in-two system, so that you even forgive the loud transmission and the hard load change reactions – both improved in 2014 thanks to less play in the drive train. It should be clear that, on the other hand, there is also some weight combined with all these qualities.
When standing, you need strength, experience and determination for her 342 kilograms. But when driving, the mighty 1600 is lively, handy and precise. And in the wind protection of your mighty windshield, you can also ride with your visor open or with a jet helmet, even in second gear and with music from the sound system. When the ignition is switched off, the windshield automatically shuts down as theft protection for the Garmin BMW navigation system. So there are plenty of reasons to flirt with a BMW K 1600. You don’t have to be a world traveler or a luxury freak. Solvent only, that helps.
Market situation
Half the basic new price is currently the lowest limit for what has to be paid for used vehicles. Most of the time they have some of the extras that were once subject to a surcharge.
from 10,500 euros
Sample ad: BMW K 1600 GT, 48,000 km, EZ 08/2011, HU 09/2017, 2nd hand, 160 PS, white, full service history, but scratches due to a fall over, with good equipment such as adaptive headlights and engine protection bars
Low price level. Anyone looking for the cheapest six-packs shouldn’t make high demands in terms of condition / care. Small bumps or quirks here and there tarnish the overall impression. If you want to accept that: here you go. Pay attention to the equipment.
from 13,000 euros
Sample ad: BMW K 1600 GT, 65,800 km, EZ 03/2013, HU 03/2018, 1st hand, 160 PS, full-service motorcycle in good condition, gray, with navigation, tire pressure control, audio system, engine protection bars and extended warranty until February 2018
Medium price level. The majority of the offers can be found here, most of which score points with extensive extras, fresh HU and possibly even a guarantee. The mileage can be high at times, but it is completely harmless for the six-cylinder
from 16,000 euros
Example ad: BMW K 1600 GTL, 16,500 km, EZ 03/2014, HU 09/2017, 1st hand, 160 PS, full-service motorcycle in top condition, free from accidents, tires 90 percent, with full equipment and higher seat
High price level. Both the GT and the GTL can be purchased in this price segment, some of which are well below 20,000 kilometers. A newer year of construction, top condition and extensive equipment then offer the best conditions for a happy future.
Dealer interview with Jochen Ernsting

Jochen Ernsting (55). Head of the legendary BMW dealer Studemann (“The Hamburg original. Since 1971.”) on the subject of mobile six-packs.
MOTORCYCLE: A BMW K 1600 GT or GTL is perfect for …?
Jochen Ernsting: … comfort-oriented long-distance drivers as well as torque freaks. On the one hand, the thing can be driven extremely lazily – from 1800 revolutions it already delivers 85 percent of the maximum torque. On the other hand, you can really let it rip with her – sound and agility also go well with it.
MOTORCYCLE: And how easy it is for interested parties and used motorcycles to find each other?
Jochen Ernsting: Since a motorcycle in this price range is bought very consciously, there are few owners who at some point discover that the bike is not for them after all. With an emotional hobby like motorcycling, however, you can always come across something that seems more attractive or that suits your life situation better. Then it is sold after all. Although these young used vehicles are still very expensive, supply and demand are in balance in terms of volume; the only question is whether the specific machine will also meet the wishes of the interested party with regard to equipment packages.
MOTORCYCLE: What should you pay particular attention to when viewing a used vehicle??
Jochen Ernsting: Checkbook maintenance. Consequences of falls and the like. The condition of the tires says a lot about the care mentality: Does the tread still have the semicircular shape or are there washouts on the left and right? That would be an indication of tire pressure that is not checked too often. When it comes to the performance and payload offered by the BMW K 1600, the tires are the top priority. And if extras are installed – which is almost always the case – then of course they should also work.
MOTORCYCLE: And what mileage can be expected from the six-cylinder?
Jochen Ernsting: The scale is completely open at the top. We haven’t had a single engine or transmission overhaul yet. Not even a clutch was due so far. Here the BMW K 1600 seems to remain very inconspicuous over the long term.
MOTORCYCLE: Do you have any last words?
Jochen Ernsting: Yes. That more people should dare to drive something like that. Especially those who drive long distances in pairs should have respect, but in no way be afraid of a K 1600. It is much easier to drive than is often assumed. And although many bikers mourn the K 1300 GT, the BMW K 1600 is actually clearly the better motorcycle.

Internet
There are two major forums on the Internet: The somewhat more active BMW K forum is essentially only about the K models. Whether technology, tires, accessories or the whole bike, there is a lively exchange here for the 1600s. At www.bmw-bike-forum.info, on the other hand, all BMW models are devoted to, and in the Supertourer sub-forum there is also the BMW K 1600 GT / GTL in particular.

The six-cylinder boxer runs even more smoothly than the heart of the BMW K 1600, but overall the Honda is less sporty.
Honda ST 1300 Pan European
127 hp, weight 326 kg, 0-100 km / h: 3.5 seconds, Vmax: 225 km / h, consumption 5.1 liters, ABS,
from 4000 euros.
Those who want to travel in peace are well served here. Good engine, inconspicuous undercarriage, but high speed commuting.
Kawasaki 1400 GTR
155 hp, weight 304 kg, 0-100 km / h: 3.2 seconds, Vmax: 246 km / h, consumption 5.5 liters, ABS,

Its powerful engine is convincing, the equipment is valuable. Unfortunately it can only be steered a bit sluggishly.
Yamaha FJR 1300 A
144 hp, weight 305 kg, 0–100 km / h: 3.3 seconds, Vmax: 245 km / h, consumption 5.5 liters, ABS, from 4,300 euros.
FJR stands for Fast Journey and Ride, so she interprets the topic of tours in a more sporty and dynamic way.
