Batteries and cooling system are built into the Vision DC Roadster in such a way that they look like the BMW boxer.

The view from above clearly shows the lateral shape of the batteries and the cooling system. The highlight: When the electric motor is started, the cooling elements slide out slightly to the side and indicate that it is ready to drive.

The electric drive is placed under the batteries and directly connected to the cardan.

Where the fuel tank is usually located on combustion motorcycles, the BMW Vision DC Roadster has a clear view of the lattice frame and the longitudinal grooves on the frame.

The design element (longitudinal grooves) extends from the headlight (picture) over the tank to the rear suspension of the swing arm.

The rear light consists of two C-shaped LED elements that are integrated into the aluminum rear carrier.

On the side, the bright elements on the tires should ensure better visibility, while the LED rear light takes over this task.

What will the sound of future electric motorcycles be like? Will they have to be at least minimally audible for security reasons? We don’t (yet) know what the Vision DC Roadster sounds like, whether it hums audibly, for example.

"New and independent aesthetics in the best BMW tradition", According to BMW, this is what the Vision DC Roadster was all about.

Deep front and high rear – if it is not yet installed, you cannot tell from the aluminum part how much it characterizes the side look of the Vision DC Roadster.

BMW Motorrad Vision DC Roadster
Electric motorcycle in boxer look
An electrically operated naked bike, whose batteries and cooling system are installed diagonally reminiscent of the location and appearance of the two-cylinder boxer engine, that is the concept behind the BMW Vision DC Roadster study.
Gib’s closed! When you think of BMW motorcycles, you first think of the two-cylinder boxer. It has been shaping the look of many BMWs for over 90 years. But how will that develop in the long term? Especially with regard to electromobility? BMW is already thinking about this today and is presenting the possible future of BMW electric motorcycles with the Vision DC Roadster naked bike concept.
Cooling elements extend to the side
Batteries and cooling system are arranged vertically and are reminiscent of the two-cylinder boxer. Two elements with cooling fins and integrated fans protrude from the side. When the electric motor is started, the cooling elements slide out slightly to the side, indicating that you are ready to go.

The motor just mentioned does not take up a lot of space, is housed under the energy storage unit and directly connected to the cardan. The cardan shaft, in turn, is exposed. On the side, however, the look is mainly characterized by the low front and the high rear. It looks very sporty, not necessarily particularly comfortable – we would like to do a seat test.
The BMW Vision DC Roadster has a flat aluminum frame construction that integrates the seat in the middle and closes off with the LED rear light where the tank is usually located on conventional combustion motorcycles. If the driver looks down between this frame in front of him, he sees the grooves milled lengthways in the aluminum frame, which not only loop around once as a design element, but also ensure weight savings.

New tire optics for better visibility
Metzeler developed the tires especially for the BMW Vision DC Roadster vehicle concept and accommodated light-colored reflective squares roughly the size of a postage stamp on the sides. We hope that the motorcycle and tire manufacturers will join forces here and emphatically encourage such a solution for one of the next Euro standards – as a replacement for the currently prescribed side reflectors, which make every effort in terms of color, shape and placement, to improve aesthetics of a motorcycle.
Let’s stay with the topic of safety: At first glance, the driver’s station wagon doesn’t look like protective clothing, the sewn-in protectors are only visible at second glance. Formulations such as “integrated technologies enable various light functions”, “digital networking” and the backpack vest attached by magnets lead us to conclude that this was not the focus.

When will BMW electric motorcycles go into series production??
BMW has so far been able to showcase the C evolution scooter and the i3 and i8 cars with e-drive, but the Bavarians do not yet have an e-motorcycle in their range. When we asked when the time will come, Tim Diehl-Thiele, Head of Communication BMW Motorrad, answered: “We’re not talking about decades.” Aha. According to BMW, the study is in any case fully functional, we did not receive any technical data upon request.
The BMW Vision DC Roadster will be presented on June 25, 2019 as part of the NextGen event in the BMW World in Munich. It will also be on display at the BMW Motorrad Days in Garmisch-Partenkirchen (July 5 – 7).
