The sports boxer, which was part of the BMW range from 1998 to 2006, was popular, but not a conspicuous bestseller. Today around 9,500 BMW R 1100 S models are still registered in Germany. Accordingly, the previously not exactly cheap BMW can now also be found in a larger selection in price regions below 4500 euros. In addition, it is considered reliable, and in particular the models equipped with dual ignition from 2003 onwards are very well-engineered – the previously criticized constant speed jerk has almost disappeared since then. The 98 hp boxer is of course too weak for serious sporting activities, directs vibrations right into the handlebars and consumes half a liter of oil over a thousand kilometers. Although far from perfection, the 1100 sports boxer is in demand as a concise motorcycle with rough edges – an exciting alternative to Far Eastern monotony and Italian divas.

Modifications to the brake system: larger brake discs at the front (320 instead of 305 millimeters), larger brake pistons, new partially integral ABS with brake booster, which is subject to a surcharge. Black is not used in the paintwork, blue is added. Price: 21,930 marks (11,189 euros).
2003
Transmission revised (already from autumn 2002), double ignition and new ignition system. Price: 11,505 euros. A Boxer Cup edition in special paint with sports suspension, wider rear wheel rim and wider tire, engine spoiler and valve cover protectors made of carbon is limited to 1250 pieces to the side of the standard model. Price: 12,750 euros.
2004
Jump start connection, socket as standard, raised bench (820 millimeters) available as free special equipment. Price: 11,712 euros. In the case of the Cup replica (new edition of 1100 pieces), which is in the range for the last time for 13,712 euros, the ABS is omitted, its silencer comes from the exhaust specialist Laser.
