Strong character air / oil-cooled boxer with Euro 5
The air / oil-cooled boxer with its strong character is still the retro BMW’s greatest asset. The Euro 5 update doesn’t change that, but it makes the anniversary BMW fit for the company’s centenary.
Ferdinand Heinrich-Steige
07/03/2021
At first glance, Euro 5 changes little in the neo-retro BMW, which is good news for many. As usual at BMW, the latest version of the two-cylinder can be recognized by the newly designed cylinder heads. Behind it, a new turbulence system should enable cleaner, better combustion. Boxer connoisseurs will also notice the longer increased idle speed, which is supposed to bring the catalytic converter up to operating temperature more quickly. Another measure to reduce emissions.
Euro 5-R nineT with more punch
As a result of the modifications, the NineT models have nominally lost a horsepower (now 109 instead of 110), which should run under measurement tolerance even on the test bench. In practice, that doesn’t really matter. Here, and this is definitely noticeable, what counts is the maximum power that was applied earlier (at 7,250 instead of 7,750 rpm). The maximum torque (116 Nm at 6,000 rpm) remained unchanged, but in the range between 4,000 and 6,000 rpm, which is relevant for the country road, it is above the level of the Euro 4 engines. The proven drive already impressed with a lot of pressure in the lower rev range and superior torque across the entire rev range. Now it offers a little more punch. To the previous driving modes “Rain” and “Road” now come at an additional cost “Dyna” (NineT and NineT Pure) or. “Dirt” (Scrambler and Urban G / S), which sharpen the response and allow a little more slip. Unfortunately, a recommended hook in the configurator.
The fact that the NineT has become a bit quieter is not immediately noticeable, because the mufflers, which are differently shaped and relocated depending on the model, remain acoustically present at all times. A few decibels less could still be the decisive factor in favor of a Euro 5 NineT for some interested parties.
Cornering ABS series, cornering lights optional
The facelift does not only affect the engine, however. The new shock absorber with travel-dependent damping slightly increases comfort on bumpy roads, but the basic set-up remains rather tight, even with the Scrambler and Urban G / S, whose chassis offer more reserves. So the retro BMW remains true to itself, is handy and intuitive and, depending on the driver’s nature, also a bit suitable for touring. You can always rely on the bite-proof brake, which is now even standard with cornering ABS (“ABS-Pro”) is supported.
LED indicators and the new headlights, which are now adorned with a daytime running light bar as standard and thus have a higher recognition value than the old halogen round headlights, provide additional purchase incentives. A cornering light is also integrated for an additional charge, in addition to the aforementioned “Driving modes Pro” a cruise control can also be ordered. Even if even more electronics are supposedly entering the perfect retro world, the NineT still stands for screwdriver-friendliness and customizing options ex works. This means that every model can be replaced with new ones as usual “Option 719”-Prepare milled parts, other tanks, rear silencers or various rear variants.
Racer variant with half shell is no longer available
Except for the elimination of the racer version with half-shell, everything remains the same in the best sense of the word: NineT and NineT Pure primarily appeal to fans of classic street motorcycles, the differences here are mainly in the chassis and thus also in the purchase price. Scrambler and Urban G / S are a bit more off-road with their 19-inch front wheel and more suspension travel. However, their ergonomics are less suitable for longer off-road excursions. Anyway, NineT is ultimately about enjoying and, to a certain extent, the essence of motorcycling. All the better that we have retained this interplay of classic design and modern technology.
Conclusion
The Euro 5 update brings a few amenities and innovations to the NineT family, above all cornering ABS, new driving modes (optional) and a new headlight. The changes to the engine are also noticeable. In terms of character and handling, however, nothing has changed, which is why the retro boxer is still a recommendation for everyone for whom modern BMWs are too technocratic. But they are not cheap: Prices start at 13,050 euros for the R nineT Pure.
