Comeback of BSA
Indians bring back cult brand with twin

In 2016, an Indian group bought the international trademark rights to the former British manufacturer BSA. The new models with 650 twin-cylinders are to be presented in 2021. Probably at EICMA.

Birmingham Small Arms Company was actually called the company, but is known by the abbreviation BSA. The British brand became world famous with its single-cylinder Gold Star, which was built into the 1960s, before it went into decline in the early 1970s.

At the end of 2016, the Indian Mahindra Group acquired the trademark rights through its subsidiary Yezdi BSA bought and announced to build motorcycles again under the name and to want to bring them onto the international market. Two years were named as the period for the BSA’s comback at the time. In August 2019, Yezdi announced with a post on Instagram “a comeback” on. Which models, however, remained completely open. A BSA start failed to materialize.

BSA from England and also as electronic versions

In November 2020, Anand Mahindra, Indian billionaire and chairman of the Mahindra Group, had in an interview with the British newspaper “The Guardian” the comeback plans resumed. BSA is scheduled to start in 2021 – with a production facility in Great Britain. Whereby this is only supposed to be a final assembly from kits supplied from India. Currently there are still uncertainties due to Corona and Brexit, but the plan itself is in place. Initially, BSA is to start with motorcycles with internal combustion engines, but later switch to electric drives. In which “later” already means the end of 2021. Mahindra will shortly begin construction of an R&D facility in Banbury, where the Mahindra Racing team is already based.

Premiere with two-cylinder at EICMA

For the comeback, the Indians relied on a newly developed two-cylinder, which is probably designed as a parallel twin. With a displacement of 650 cubic centimeters, it is aimed directly at competitor Royal Enfield. The engines are already in the final stage of series testing and meet all common approval standards for Asia and Europe. EICMA 2021 in Milan is increasingly emerging as a premiere location.

Over 200,000 employees worldwide

Mahindra is by no means unknown in the motorcycle scene. Since 2011, the Mumbai-based group has been successfully entering the Moto3 World Championship as a designer with its own team. In India, Mahindra is one of the greats as a supplier of cars, motorcycles, agricultural machinery and airplanes.

The group employs over 200,000 people worldwide (for comparison: BMW has 122,500 employees worldwide). At the same time as buying BSA, Mahindra also acquired the Indian license rights for the Czech brand Jawa. The first new Jawa models can already be bought. The motorcycle and scooter division of Peugeot is also part of the Indian portfolio.

In the photo show we look back on the BSA model Gold Star DBD 34.

Conclusion

The Indian Mahindra Group wants to bring back the cult brand BSA in 2021. With models around a new 650 twin-cylinder, BSA is to compete directly against competitor Royal Enfield.
