Used retro bargain?

BMW can also be pretty and for the heart: Since 2014, the BMW R nineT has been enticing fans of puristic pleasure driving. Tips and tips for buying a used retro bike.

Klaus Herder

Word games, preferably in combination with foreign languages and the playful use of upper and lower case, rarely work. Sometimes they even go really wrong: nineT – “no, tea”; “Never nice”? It’s good that that was pretty much the only real mistake that the BMW managers allowed themselves to design their 90th anniversary present. The rest went really well. Rumor has it that in preparation for the festivities, the design department, which had been orphaned for many decades, was revived. Before, you had the impression that since the legendary Hans A. Muth (R 90 S, R 100 RS) left in the early 80s, the design job had to be done by the mechanical engineers in person. Either way: The BMW R nineT popped through the ceiling from the presentation

Retro doesn’t work on its own

Blind orders, paying the full list price, miserably long delivery times – when was that last at BMW? The recipe for success was probably that the BMW R nineT makers did not confuse purism with retro. Retro doesn’t work on its own. Pretty, but somewhat tired and bloodless quotes like the Kawasaki W 650 or the Triumph Thruxton are commercially frightening examples of this.

Prices are still quite steep

BMW was so clever not only to quote for the BMW R nineT, but to combine a mix of styles from the best of different motorcycle epochs with a powerful engine and to make the whole thing as straightforward as possible. Fat upside-down fork, lush 320 mm brake discs with Brembo monoblock calipers, plus the last expansion stage of the air-cooled and divinely sounding dohc boxer engine as well as lots of lovingly made details – the BMW R nineT is just not retro, it just is wonderfully pure. A good three years after its market launch, the first copies of the bestseller are now changing hands as used ones. And that at still quite hefty prices – and despite the rather strange name.

Market situation BMW R nineT

High demand, stable prices, short downtimes – used BMW R nineTs are the seller’s favorites. Demonstrators and former rental machines can also quickly find interested parties.

BMW R nineT from 11,500 euros

Low price level

The term “low” is of course very relative in this context, but with a bit of luck a 2014 BMW R nineT that is far away from the metropolitan areas and with many kilometers (all over 10,000 km) can be had for less than 12,000 euros.

BMW R nineT from 12,500 euros

Medium price level

Less than 10,000, sometimes even less than 5,000 kilometers are common in this price league, and almost all of them are first-time owners. Smaller conversions (indicators, mirrors, humps) can certainly be found, but corresponding offers are usually over 13,000 euros.

BMW R nineT from 14,000 euros

High price level

There are a lot of demonstrators with low mileage and extensive conversions, who rarely have more than 5,000 kilometers on the clock. From 15,000 euros, the air for sellers becomes very thin, realistic only for well-made extreme conversions.

Dealer interview with Helge Schroder

Helge Schroder (42), Service Manager at BMW Original Studemann in Hamburg, about customers, conversions and tires.

MOTORCYCLE: What distinguishes your R nineT customers from the rest of the BMW customer base?

Helge Schroder: Those are those who really want to convert their motorcycle and customize it beyond the in-house range of accessories. This has never been seen before at BMW to this extent. And when the rest of our customers mostly want motorcycles for the big tour, R nineT riders are simply looking for something nice for their hearts and for the Sunday evening lap.

MOTORCYCLE: What have your R nineT customers ridden before??

Helge Schroder: Many are classic boxer enthusiasts with plenty of BMW experience. The rest of them are mostly cafe racer fans who come from third-party brands and, conspicuously, often from Triumph.

MOTORCYCLE: What clothes are required when the boys are at your counter??

Helge Schroder: Sure thing: jeans, leather jacket and half-shell.

MOTORCYCLE: Keyword conversions: Do R nineT drivers do the work, or are they do-it-yourself? And what is the most popular thing to do??

Helge Schroder: Half / half. And rear conversions are by far the most popular. Either just the aluminum hump or more elaborate from Schnitzer, Wunderlich and whatever they are called. The painting of parts – of course in black – is also popular: for example, powdering the valve cover black and making the final drive black, which is initially gray.

MOTORCYCLE: Which conversions are technically sensible?

Helge Schroder: The chassis is now rather mixed for dedicated vaporizing – well -. If you really want to know, the Touratech chassis, for example, is something really nice. Costs around 3200 euros completely, but is also really really tasty.

MOTORCYCLE: Speaking of the chassis: What does the service manager say about tires?

Helge Schroder: Most customers are satisfied with the Metzeler Roadtec Z8. But I recommend the Pirelli Angel GT, which means that the R nineT has significantly improved cornering stability.

MOTORCYCLE: Your sightseeing tip?

Helge Schroder: Watch out for scratches on the front frame. It is almost impossible to dismantle the tank without scratches, for example. B. to get to the battery. We always do this in the workshop in pairs and mask off the frame beforehand. And make sure that the electrical system works when converting the rear end, there are sometimes problems.

Literature:

Model-specific literature is still in short supply, but the close relationship to the R 1200 GS and R 1200 R makes the 304-page tome by Delius Klasing about the dohc four-valve boxer, published in 2013, recommendable (ISBN 978-3768853521, 29.90 euros) . Also okay: the special technical volume 6012 by Bucheli for 34.90 euros (ISBN 978-3716821480).
