Second hand advice Yamaha Vmax (1985 – 2010)
The Yamaha muscle bike as a used one

The rare cross between chopper and muscle bike has been a fetish object for over a quarter of a century. Splurging on this wonderfully unreasonable motorcycle is not an offense.

Bridge races “,” bridge races “are the names of competitions in the USA in which two machines compete for a 400-meter sprint. Yamaha was so impressed by the spectacle in the early 1980s that the Japanese built a motorcycle especially for it: the Vmax. Brute 145 HP, over 100 Nm at 3000 rpm – the Vau-Vier outshone everything in series production when it debuted in 1985. This murder device was admired and became a cult object. Although only a few drivers have really seen and experienced the motorcycle. the Vmax is actually only good for a short straight attack. From 160 km / h the load commutes frighteningly (doughy frame, unstable fork), stands and pegs set up in tight bends, and it drinks improperly (up to ten liters per 100 kilometers). It was not until 1996 that Yamaha dared to officially offer the Vmax to German admirers – there were and are many – (around 7,000 sales by 2002). Previously, only dedicated dealers had brought the muscle bike into the country as a gray import, but the motorcycle is still a rarity on the used market.

The new Vmax has been around since 2009 (see model upgrade). It’s faster, tougher, better, but so badly priced as a second-hand bike that it will probably remain an exotic one.

Inspection / market situation

In contrast to the old Vmax, in which the intake manifold was only a dummy, the 2009 model breathes greedily through the two extremely eye-catching, hand-polished aluminum snorkels.

sightseeing

The first type 2EL officially imported to Germany does not have a V-Booster (servomotor that releases a larger intake cross-section from 6000 rpm). A retrofit kit (which was more than 1000 euros expensive at the time) is not available today.

more available, so that this type is the least popular in the used range. Take this into account when negotiating prices! Conversion measures such as new precision bearings or stabilizers from Emil Schwarz, phone 0 71 81/99 52 90, www.emilschwarz.de, make sense (in the original condition often too much bearing play and wheel alignment with a difference of up to 15 millimeters). Conversions to 17-inch wheels (at least wider rim rings) are also a tip in order to be able to fall back on the latest tires. In any case, standard chassis weaknesses can be significantly reduced, which increases the value of the machine. On the other hand, be careful with dubious exhaust systems and decorative parts – everything properly entered? Otherwise the Vmax is considered robust. In general: The cardan, clutch and gearbox suffer during heavy acceleration orgies. During the test drive, pay close attention to the corresponding noises.

Market situation

Real pig prices are called for a Japanese motorcycle. It’s because of its cult status. Example: 15 years old, more than 50,000 kilometers down, 5,000 euros are required. Even if you only pay just over 4,000 euros in real terms, that is still an astonishing value retention. However, offers of 4000 euros or less are very rare, and the search for cheap bargains is a real challenge. From 5000 euros, however, you can find neatly maintained specimens in their original condition with a few kilometers (less than 20,000 kilometers), which are comparatively easy to sell again. Tinkered machines and sporty conversions, which offer technical advantages, but whose appearance is rarely well received, find it difficult. Second-hand buyers usually still find the “new” Vmax from year of construction 2009 to be too expensive (starting at 14,000 euros), the supply is small, but so is the demand.
