Radial brake calipers, upside-down fork, 125 hp – is it really a cruiser? Cruiser, you know that these are imposingly heavy and expansive machines with which older gentlemen in particular take a leisurely coffee trip. For a long time it didn’t matter how the 60 hp were slowed down and how far away the front wheel was positioned. In 2006, the up to then rather conservative big cruiser scene did very well, which the Suzuki M 1800 R presented in a sporty way. The brakes of a super sports car and such brute force broke with many traditions (and demanded an experienced hand!), But lo and behold: There were younger enthusiasts (30+) who were suddenly very fond of cruising. Although the 1800s co-founded the relatively new power cruiser segment, it was still not a bestseller machine. To date, the annual sales figures are on average at a manageable three-digit level. Slightly modified, somewhat livelier special models also only occupied niches.

Nevertheless, one can state with a clear conscience: The Suzuki Intruder M 1800 R, like its forerunner VS 1400 Intruder, has found a loyal and very broad fan base over the years. The twin cam V2, which is quite modern for the segment, pushes a whopping 160 Newton meters – which is pleasing, just like the easy-care cardan. The mix of attack and leaning back polarized from the start. The Japanese therefore brought a very pleasing normal cruiser with 114 hp with the C variant in 2008. The classic model was only in the range for four years, but has also found its fans: said older men who like to pull the cable on a coffee trip.

Facelift

2006 Launch. The Suzuki Intruder M 1800 R runs under the model code VZR 1800. Price: 12,990 euros.

2007 The plastic engine covers are replaced by metal ones. Empty weight increases from 341 to 345 kg. Price: 13,325 euros.

2008 Small facelift: changes to silencers, valves, air filter box, throttle valve unit and catalytic converter as well as to indicators and tail lights. Market launch of the model variant Suzuki Intruder M 1800 R2 with a new headlight unit. Simultaneously the market launch of the new Suzuki Intruder C 1800 R model (model code: VLR 1800) with only 114 instead of 125 hp, but more flywheel mass, wider front tires (150/80 R 16), flatter steering head angle (58 instead of 58.8 degrees) and a longer wheelbase (1755 instead of 1710 mm). The empty weight of the C model is significantly higher: 380 kg. Price for all models and variants: 13,490 euros.

2009 M 1800 R2 for the last time in the range, market launch of the new model variant Suzuki Intruder M 1800 RZ with two-tone paintwork and black wheels. Price: 13,690 euros. Market launch of a model variant of the classic model Suzuki Intruder C 1800 RT. Differences to standard C: two-tone paintwork, bench with riveted cover. Price: 13,690 euros.

2010 Modified cylinder head, clutch, gearbox, fuel pump, rear brake disc and cockpit. Prices: from 14,290 euros.

2012 Last model year Suzuki Intruder C 1800 R in Germany.

2014 Model variant Suzuki Intruder M 1800 RZ is not available on the German market.

2015 The “RZ” is again being offered in Germany for 15,440 euros. Price standard M 1800 R: 14,840 euros.

Market situation

The range is thin up to 10,000 euros, and even very thin for the C models. Demonstrators and bikes as new make up almost 50 percent of the offers.

  • from 7000 euros:

Example display: 21,900 km, EZ 07/2008, HU / AU 06/2017. Since I am expecting offspring, I am selling my Suzuki Intruder M 1800 R Special Edition, color yellow, perfect condition, accident-free, was only kept in garages and has many extras, 8000 euros (private seller from the Palatinate).

Low price level. Occasionally, you can find M 1800 R for 6500 euros, but then sometimes through private remodeling z. B. defaced by airbrush decoration and with many kilometers. Used C models are available from 8,000 euros.

  • from 8500 euros:

Example ad: 4571 km, EZ 11/2009, new HU, 114 PS, German model, full service history with all documents and keys, sissy bar, window, tires in front approx. 55%, rear approx. 80%, 9690 euros (independent dealer from Lower Saxony ).

Medium price level. Well-kept specimens of M and C models with a checkbook, less than 20,000 kilometers and extras such as windows and pockets as well as chrome parts can be easily identified for less than 10,000 euros. Dealer and private offers are balanced.

  • from 10,000 euros:

Example display: 5200 km, EZ 10/2013, 1st hand, parts worth 20.00 euros were installed: Sissybar, handlebar end indicators, crash bars (flown in from America), Hyperforce, open K&N filter, 10,500 euros (private provider from Berlin).

High price level. Since these used prices are already close to the list prices for new vehicles or discount campaigns attract customers, second-hand Suzuki Intruder 1800s only go away if they have been professionally redesigned and upgraded.

There’s an “M” next to the “C” in the shop. who wins?

As for the customer’s attention? Then probably the Suzuki Intruder M 1800 R. The shape of the machine is more aggressive and conspicuous, so it attracts more looks. You can also see immediately that there are very different people who are interested in the respective model. 

What kind of people are they?

I would describe those interested in a Suzuki Intruder C 1800 R as somewhat more cautious. They are of advanced age and knowledgeable. In contrast, “M” prospects are more extroverted and younger. Younger, that means between 35 and 45 years of age. They like to circling the motorcycle and then rave: “Wow, what a fat box!” But that doesn’t mean that they’ll sign a sales contract right away.

The Suzuki Intruder M 1800 R is therefore more popular as a used one?

I don’t want to say that. The “M” is certainly the more common model. Because it is much more represented in the stock and because the owners change more frequently. “C” drivers tend to stay loyal to their machine, which means that the classic cruiser is rarely available. But regardless of whether it’s a normal or a muscular cruiser, both machines are not exactly torn out of my hand.

Why is that?

Well, let’s be honest, these are really heavy suitcases. If they fall out of your hand and you have to jump after them, then that’s not exactly for the frail pensioners. Buyers of a Suzuki Intruder 1800 should already have some experience and not stumble while maneuvering. But once everything starts rolling, you quickly notice how well the machine can be moved. And we haven’t had any technical problems with any of them, even with higher mileage.

Tip from the used uncles

Technically great and reliable, reasonably priced, but a Suzuki Intruder 1800 should only be bought carefully – and despondent women prefer to keep their hands off it. Heavy, unwieldy, brutal – a mix more for advanced drivers.
