Second-hand advice: Suzuki GSX-R 1000
The super sports car from Suzuki as a used one
Anyone who wanted to be way ahead in race training or at the regulars’ table from 2001 onwards couldn’t get past the Kilo-Gixxer. But that didn’t always stay that way, GSX-R is not always GSX-R.
Klaus Herder
05/01/2012
The recipe is actually quite simple: Take the largest displacement, the highest output, the most modern fuel supply, the most stable chassis, the sharpest design and as little weight as possible and sell the thing at an attractive price – and the bestseller is ready. This happened in 2001 with the GSX-R 1000, when Suzuki’s super sports opponents were still called the Honda CBR 900 RR Fireblade and Kawasaki ZX-9R and even the Yamaha R1 had to make do with 150 hp. The (almost) full liter displacement, a whopping 160 hp and impressive driving stability ensured that the large GSX-R became the absolute favorite of the very fast guys. In addition to the splendid technology, the Suzuki team also delivered brilliant timing, because the next super sports car came every two years GSX-R 1000 exactly when the three competitors, updated at the same time, had a year of tough distribution battles behind them – and they were better. But as early as 2004, the air became significantly thinner and the GSX-R had to accept several defeats in the comparison test.

The new generation of competitors, ultra-compact racers with their short tanks with very narrow knees, was inferior to the now comparatively long and almost massive looking GSX-R, especially in handling, while its powerful engine was still first class in terms of responsiveness and power delivery. But with the K5, the 2005 model, Suzuki managed another great success. Significantly lighter, more graceful and with 178 hp also much more powerful than before, it made the competition look mighty old. And not only on the racetrack, but also in everyday life. The absolutely neutral driving behavior, the predictable, homogeneous power delivery and a relatively comfortable seating position made it possible. The exhaust (“Die Keule”) might look strange, but even so, the GSX-R became the best-selling super sports car of the 2005 season. After that, performance went up a bit, but in terms of “performance” it only went downhill. Maybe Euro 3 was to blame. Or maybe just the competition that had learned to win from Suzuki.
Inspection / market situation
Suzuki
Model year 2007: New face: The headlight has no side tips because the parking light has been integrated into the windshield.
The biggest problem for Kilo-Gixxer are their drivers and their destructive leisure behavior. The agile 1000 is the favorite of many hobby racers who like to take off their sports equipment during racetrack training sessions, which can lead to hidden frame damage. Mysterious suspension problems are usually caused by this. The consequence for used buyers: never buy a racing GSX-R without a frame measurement. As an alternative, have the seller confirm in writing that the past has not been crashed. After 10,000 kilometers of the racetrack at the latest, the four-cylinder needs a major overhaul. However, precisely because of its proverbial stability, some Suzuki drivers neglect maintenance. First hand, checkbook, no racetrack – this is what the desired Suzi looks like. If the popular modifications (exhaust!) Are approved or registered, nothing can go wrong. Typical quirks? In short supply, occasionally 2001 models had to struggle with a defective throttle valve sensor. In the case of the K1, the thin titanium nitride coating on the fork tends to wear off, but this does not affect its function. Callbacks? K5 / K6: Framework assessment and assembly of a reinforcement; K7: Replacement of generator rotor, idle control valve and control unit.
Market situation
The K5 and K6 are the most popular used ones. The astonishingly price-stable 2005/2006 model years – not only for Suzuki standards – are practically impossible to get for less than 6000 euros. Well over 7000 are sometimes asked for – and paid for, because with these models the package of brute motor, low mass, great sound and good reliability is just right. The situation is significantly different with the very early and very late Kilo-Gixxers: The first model years (K1 / K2) now not only look old in terms of design, their sales are rather sluggish. Not to mention the fact that quite a few of them suffered badly on the racetrack. With the relatively fresh GSX-R 1000, a completely different problem complicates the sale: The difference between the required used price and the discount rates that are currently being called for models from the previous year and / or daily registrations is simply too small. Practically new machines are already on offer for less than 11,000 euros, while new 2009 models are traded from 9,000 euros. This situation will probably not get any better (for sellers), because meanwhile the GSX-R is also in competition with the Honda Fireblade on the used market – and it has simply been better since 2008.

Suzuki GSX-R 1000 K1.
The Suzuki GSX-R 1000 K1 is the first edition. The 2002 model, which is almost identical except for a few minor details, bears the abbreviation K2. The most important technical data: 988 cm³, 160 HP at 10 800 rpm, 110 Nm at 8400 rpm, empty weight 194 kg. Of the K1 3114 units were registered in Germany, the K2 brought it to 2640 units. Color palette K1: blue / white, black / red, black / silver; K2: blue / white, black / red, blue / black. The K1 cost 12,388.60 euros, the K2 12,510 euros. K1 and K2 established the good reputation of the GSX-R 1000, but are now considered a bit stubborn and stiff at the hips. Handling them – and that wasn’t always a matter of course for power bikes in this category at the time – is unproblematic, but not overly agile. The six-piston stoppers could be a little snappier.

Suzuki GSX-R 1000 K3.
The Suzuki GSX-R 1000 K3 and its 2004 sister with the abbreviation K4 are the result of an extensive and all-round successful model upgrade. The most important technical data: 988 cm³, 164 HP at 10,800 rpm, 111 Nm at 8,400 rpm, empty weight 193 kg. Of the K3, 2,839 units were registered in Germany, the K4 only had 1,496 units – the increased competition was clearly noticeable in 2004. Color palette K3: blue / white, silver, black / orange; K4: blue / white, black / gray, yellow / gray. K3 and K4 each cost 12,510 euros. In order to reduce the stocks (around 300 pieces) that had built up until October 2004, Suzuki lowered the price to 9990 euros. The GSX-R was still the first choice for the racetrack, but it has now also impressed in everyday life.

Suzuki GSX-R 1000 K7.
The Suzuki GSX-R 1000 K7 and the completely identical 2008 model named K8 entered a difficult legacy, because the K5 / K6 had set the bar pretty high. The most important technical data: 999 cm³, 185 hp at 12,000 rpm, 117 Nm at 10,000 rpm, empty weight 212 kg. Of the K7, 3,032 units were registered in Germany, the K8 brought it to 1,578 units. Color palette K7: matte black, blue / white, black / orange, red / silver; K8: matte black, blue / white, white / silver, black / gold. K7 and K8 each cost 13,490 euros. The adjustment to Euro 3 (including a regulated catalytic converter) was at the expense of the performance characteristics. Between 4000 and 9000 rpm – and thus in the entire area relevant to country roads – the K5 / K6 engine has a significantly better pressure. The higher weight doesn’t make it any easier.

Suzuki GSX-R 1000 K9.
The Suzuki GSX-R 1000 K9 was intended as a counterpart to the Honda Fireblade, which has been stirring up the Superbike class vigorously since 2008. Above all, the clearer design with calmer lines (exhaust!) Distinguishes it from its predecessors. There was also fine work on the engine and chassis. It remained unchanged for three instead of the usual two years: 2010 (L0) and 2011 (L1). The most important technical data: 999 cm³, 185 hp at 12,000 rpm, 117 Nm at 10,000 rpm, empty weight only 208 kg. 1080 units of the K9 were registered in Germany, the L0 brought it to 1028 units, the L1 until October 2011 to 264 units. Colors K9: matt black, white / silver, white / blue, red / black; L0 and L1: white / blue, black / silver. Prices: The K9 cost 13,890 euros, L0: 13,990 euros, L1: 14,490 euros.
