The “R” as a shirt-sleeved naked bike, the “S” as a highly technical sports tourer and the “GT” as an extremely dynamic travel steamer – as different as the motorcycles are, they all have one thing in common: the claim to be best in class. And the engine, the four-cylinder power plant, albeit differently tuned for the respective area of ​​application. This also applies to the chassis: the same, yet slightly different. Now these three machines are not revolutionary new inventions, but first and foremost successful further developments of the previous 1200 series. So what can the K 1300 R, S and GT do better to attract potential second-hand buyers? One after the other, in this case the 1300 series.

The naked one K 1300 R can do everything better than its predecessor. Basta. That should be enough as a purchase argument. Not enough? Okay, here are the details: Pretty much all the performance-enhancing parts have been renovated, especially with the intake ducts, the technicians lend a hand and improved the flow. With 173 hp and a fat 140 Nm torque, the Bavarians have put a really brutal country road hammer on the wheels, but it can be tamed much better than the predecessor K 1200 R, which had to struggle with chassis weaknesses. The 1300 introduced in 2009, with its longer wheelbase and shorter caster, is very agile and harmonious around corners. Since the model change, the in-house front wheel suspension, called Duolever, has had a lower trailing arm made of aluminum instead of steel, and overall the suspension elements are tighter.

The ESA electronic chassis, which was previously optionally available, is called ESA II on the 1300s, and as usual, nine different settings can be selected from the handlebars at the push of a button, depending on the condition of the road surface, driving style and load, through which the spring base, rebound and compression levels are adjusted accordingly on the shock absorber become. The rebound can be varied at the front. A new feature of ESA II is a variable spring rate. More than just a nice gimmick for drivers, and since the different chassis settings can be called up spontaneously for everyone, it can be quickly determined on every test drive how important this (comparatively expensive) feature is. The following applies not only to the “R”, but to all K 1300s in general: Without ESA, vinegar can be resold. Hardly any other motorcycle can be brought to a standstill so easily and efficiently.

But now to the “S” and “GT”: In terms of the engine and the chassis, improvements that are largely similar to those of the “R” have been made. Compared to the 1200s, everything works a noticeably better, faster, harder. The increase in displacement brings more pressure, but that was also to be expected and does not need to be praised as a constructive masterpiece. The ABS is now standard on sports tourers and motorhomes, which is commendable. And on all three models, the cardan drive has been optimized with a new, two-stage cardan shaft, which is good too. The previously somewhat hooked gearbox can be shifted smoothly on the 1300s, and the already very effective cladding has also been improved on the GT. Almost a revolution: the turn signal. Contrary to the old BMW traditions, it is operated conventionally with just one switch. Previous skeptics of Bavaria should at least take a test drive and then check the used prices (for example at www.markt.motorradonline.de). One or the other could then be infected by the K virus – “K” for “no error”.

Too bad. At this point, with all the praise for the driving characteristics of the K-1300 models, a little BMW bashing would have done well. And the air filter should be changed every 10,000 kilometers, because with a large-volume engine, breathing as easily as possible is considered to prolong life. A look at the ESA shock absorber doesn’t hurt either, as it can start to sweat and replacement is expensive. “Expensive” topic: The equipment variants are a bit complicated, but immensely important for the value of the used vehicle. No ABS (only not standard in the R variant) is considered a no-go, no ESA should have a noticeable impact on the price. In contrast to heated grips, the on-board computer is difficult to retrofit and is a popular feature with K fans. This also applies to the safety package, consisting of the ASC anti-slip control and RDC tire pressure control. When buying a new one, the extras usually drove up the price by a few thousand euros, so you should take a closer look to see whether comparatively spartan cheap offers actually offer good value. Third-party accessories only count as price-increasing if they are branded goods such as Akrapovic and AC-Schnitzer for silencers or LSL and Rizoma for handlebar conversions, levers and notches. With the GT, which is well-equipped by default, accessories are hardly an issue.

As a rule, the prices for used vehicles drop when a successor model enters the market. But the K 1600 GT as a monstrous six-cylinder tourer has so far only been able to convince a few 1300 Grand Tourists to change saddles.
