The ancestor: In 1985, Suzuki brought the GSX-R 750 onto the market. Never before has there been a machine from Japan designed so radically for racing technology. Thanks to special oil cooling and lightweight aluminum chassis, it weighed only 201 kilograms with a full tank, a good 40 kilograms less than the competition.

Suzuki’s GSX-R 750 is very popular with fans of super athletes, for whom a six hundred is not strong enough and a thousand bites too brutally. There is also a lot to be said for the Suzuki as a second-hand bike. PS examined the models from 2002 to 2010.

Days of research yielded zero indications of major reliability problems with the GSX-R 750. What turned out to be extremely tough for the author due to a lack of clues, is more used for buyers “Seven fives” great news of course. Scope of this advice: the years 2000 to 2010. “Starting with the 2000 models, Suzuki has made huge strides in terms of reliability and quality control”, enthuses Martin Keller, workshop manager at the Swabian dealer Speer (www.motorrad-speer.de). Nevertheless, there are a few things to keep in mind when buying a used vehicle.

Suzuki GSX-R 750: 2000-2003 and 2004-2005 models
From 2000, Suzuki made a giant leap in quality and reliability. The GSX-R 750, which has no significant weaknesses, also benefited from this. If you are looking for and find a neat Gixxe from this year of construction, you can access it without hesitation.
With the first machines, the timing chain sometimes rattled because the mechanics of the tensioning device were not yet fully developed. “Usually that’s not a problem. Only in extreme cases can the chain skip a tooth, which would result in engine damage”, knows Denis Hertrampf, junior boss of the Lower Saxony motorcycle company Suzukiplus (www.suzukiplus.de).
“But that has only happened once or twice in Germany, and exclusively on racetracks.” To be on the safe side, Hertrampf modified the jig of rattling 750s from this year. Replacing the chain tensioner can also help. Cost: around 170 euros. In an endurance test over 50,000 kilometers by our colleagues from MOTORRAD, all of the innards were in exemplary condition.
Only the bearing shells of the crankshaft and connecting rods as well as the oil pump showed heavy scoring, but the parts were dimensionally accurate. The endurance test Suzi also had scorch marks on the exhaust valves and pitting (breakouts) on the sixth gear pair. According to scene experts, these signs of wear are rather untypical for the 750s. GSX-R drivers are happy to equip their machines with retrofit silencers. With a little luck, the bike of your choice will have a slip-on exhaust from BOS (model “Titan oval”) or SR Racing (“Sports silencer”).
Both systems convinced in a horsepower exhaust test with around five horsepower more power and still kept the prescribed limit of the stationary noise. Be careful with bikes with jumping gears or nasty rasp noises that occur when the gear wheels do not mesh properly. Both of these indicate bent shift forks caused by excessive pressure on the shift lever.
Repairing the transmission is expensive. Depending on the effort, between 800 and 1200 euros are due. In theory, this applies to all models. Just like a hooked ignition lock, which, in contrast to the gearbox, is a typical weakness in the Gixxen. “In this case, brush off the ignition key well and lubricate the lock with graphite powder”, advises Keller. Hertrampf also recommends using the ignition key without a key ring or tag. Replacing the lock is really expensive: in addition to the ignition lock, a new control unit is also required due to the immobilizer.
The GSX-R 750 has always been a popular conversion object. In the picture: the variant of Motorrad Speer from 2004: 174.6 kilos, 146 hp.
Another shortcoming concerns the brake pistons of all years of construction. When the machine is heavily used, such as driving on the mountain pass with a heavily loaded machine or when working on the race, the light metal pistons of the brake calipers overheat, whereupon the effect decreases significantly (fading).
Stainless steel pistons, for example from Speer (from 189 euros), keep the system powerful at all times. From a mileage of 20,000 kilometers, buyers should also watch out for rubbing brake discs during the test drive. Another common feature of all years of construction concerns the optimistic performance. Deviations of 15 hp or more below nominal power are not uncommon.
“If you want more power, you need different camshafts, an accessory exhaust and a coordinated programming of the control unit”, knows Rainer Tschauder from the tuning company TTSL. “The reliable engine withstands outputs of up to 150 hp on the rear wheel, even over a longer period of time, without any problems.” The only sticking point: With these measures, the operating permit expires, so they are only useful as a tip for cordoned off routes.

Suzuki GSX-R 750: 2006-2007 model
Suzuki
New cylinder head that allows higher speeds, increased power by eight to 148 hp, increased cooling power: Suzuki turned the drive upside down. That didn’t damage its reliability.
In principle, however, the servomotor for the second throttle valve of the injection system on some bikes of this year also strikes very reliably. Repair is not possible. A new throttle body costs 800 euros. Chatter-like noises indicate the defect, and the lights up “FI”-Lamp in the cockpit.
Tip: Always have error codes read out by specialists. Their diagnostic devices localize defects much more precisely than the display in the instruments. Sometimes the exhaust throttle also makes noises. However, the squeaking is absolutely harmless and does not damage the system.

This series is a completely new design. This affects the chassis as well as the drive. Like its predecessors, this engine also impresses with its high level of reliability. Only the servomotor of the double throttle valve sometimes causes problems. A repair is not possible, an exchange of the entire throttle valve body is necessary. Cost: around 800 euros.
The only recall of the entire period affects only these models. The battery is not charged due to a defective alternator regulator, after a few kilometers the battery sucks – out of the mouse! Unfortunately, Suzuki cannot name the affected frame numbers and advises you to contact a dealer about this.
Buyers of this series should also watch out for fogged headlights. If that is the case, a completely new unit has to be on the bike. If you take the above tips into account, you can strike without hesitation in any year of construction. The only downer: used 750 Suzis are popular, rare and correspondingly expensive.

Fantastic handling, great gearbox, great slipper clutch for hobby racers, good compromise between six hundred and thousand, adjustable footrests.
