Kidney belts mostly lead a shadowy existence. MOTORRAD gives an overview of the colorful variety of warming suspenders.

The belt grouch belongs to a species that is dying out in road traffic? provided that the means of transport has four wheels. On the other hand, things are different on two-wheelers: especially on hot summer days, many bikers do without the kidney belt. No problem if you are out and about in a leather suit or textile suit, despite the heat. However, there is trouble if the driver drives in jeans and a jacket or even just a T-shirt. Then the kidney area is fully in the airstream; However, hypothermic organs are poorly supplied with blood and are more prone to infections. For example, hypothermia can trigger a painful and protracted kidney inflammation that can only be got rid of with the help of a doctor and the use of medication.
So if you don’t care about sweaty safety clothing in summer, you should at least think about protecting your vital blood purification organs. And get yourself a kidney belt, which is available in stores for five marks. Even these cheap homes do their job, keeping warm, satisfactorily. By the way, kidney belts don’t have to be able to do more. The opinion that is often expressed that they should also protect against vibrations is completely unfounded (see also the interview on page 133). Kidney belts can at best provide some support to the muscles and in this way contribute to subjective well-being. In any case, kidney belts only offer real protection if they are integrated into a back protector.
Kidney warmers should always be worn as close to the body as possible in order to create an insulating air cushion. However, sweating is counterproductive, because water is a good conductor of heat and can quickly shiver. In this respect, belts made from waterproof and windproof neoprene are only suitable for shorter distances; On longer tours, specimens made of breathable materials are better. Those who are in the mood for the classic can still find good, old leather belts in stores, often with a fur insert for the cold season.
Everyone is sure to find the right kidney belt from the almost unmanageable range. For an overview, MOTORRAD presents a few examples. Whether leather or stretch, cheap or smart, universal or special, the only decisive factor for the health of lightly clad bikers is that they never ride “down without” again. And thus contributes to the fact that the seat belt grumpy belongs to the dying genus among motorcyclists.

The balancer

Kidney belts made from ComforTemp from Schoeller complement the passive insulation with an active system. The so-called phase change materials (PCM) react to changes in ambient and body temperature and compensate for fluctuations within a defined range. The pictured neoprene ComforTemp kidney belt from Hein Gericke (phone 0211/98989) costs 89.90 marks, has a Velcro fastener and is available in sizes S, M and L..

The classic one

The classic par excellence are kidney warmers made of black leather. Generations of bikers have already strapped such a black belt around their stomachs. Instead of modern Velcro fasteners, the 3306 from Held, phone 08321/66460, has stylish hook fasteners on adjustable metal buckles. For 79 marks only in black, but available for waist sizes from 70 to 120 centimeters.

The handy one

Anyone who occasionally drives their offspring for a walk on a motorcycle knows the problems the little ones have: their arms are simply too short to hold on to the rider properly. The stretch kidney belt 3314 from Held (phone 08321/66460) solves this problem with its four integrated handles. However, to be on the safe side, the clasp should always be worn on the back. Available for 55 marks in sizes 80 to 120 centimeters.

The special one

For bikers who mainly stay off the beaten track, there are special cross-kidney belts such as the Blackbelt from Fox, phone 02735/1600. Special features are the fit, which does not restrict the pilot’s freedom of movement, good ventilation and protective and at the same time stabilizing shields made of plastic. The Fox Blackbelt is available in four colors for 79 marks.

The functional

As is now common with motorcycle textile clothing, there are also kidney belts with a removable thermal lining. For example the Bikers Top Belt Two in One, sold by JF Motorsport, phone 06002/910391. Progressively stretchable support bands should also support the back muscles. The price for the belt, available in sizes M to XXL, is 59.95 marks.

The supporter

Belts like the model Sport from Bikers (79.95 Marks) are not designed to keep you warm, but rather to provide support for the muscles when you are driving in a sporty manner. For this purpose, the air-permeable Bikers Sport is equipped with support straps in full length. By compressing the abdomen, the internal organs are also better protected. Available in sizes M to XXL from JF Motorsport, phone 06002/910391.

The inexpensive one

Kidney warmers made of neoprene are available in stores for as little as five marks. Neoprene is a synthetic rubber that is usually covered with textile fabric for this purpose. It is waterproof and windproof and can be stretched without additional stretch. The main disadvantage, however, is the lack of breathability. To avoid a build-up of heat in summer, neoprene belts are often perforated, as is the case with the Louis Sponsor (9.95 Marks).

The heatable one

The Probiker Duo by Louis, phone 040/73419360, available in several colors, has two pockets for holding special gel heat cushions. These heaters, which can also be used outdoors and can be reused practically without limits, ensure a pleasant climate even in icy temperatures. The price for the Probiker Duo is 29.95 Marks, the heat pads in a set of two cost an additional 9.95 Marks.

Interview: Dr. med. Helmut Hermann

Racing and emergency doctor Dr. med. Helmut Hermann, specialist in general medicine, on the kidney belt

? Many bikers do without a kidney belt. Are there any damage to health inevitable ?! If you wear a leather suit or a waterproof and breathable textile suit, you don’t have to worry. However, the overlap in the back area must ensure that no cold bridge can arise at the transition between jacket and pants. In principle, the onion skin principle applies when choosing the right clothing. So in winter there should still be space for a warm sweater between functional underwear and protective clothing. Then who needs a kidney belt ?! All motorcyclists who believe they can do without appropriate protective clothing due to the supposedly high outside temperatures in summer and are only out and about in jeans and a T-shirt. The danger lies in the so-called wind chill effect: the kidneys on the side of the back are exposed to violent air turbulence, which makes the temperature on the body feel much colder than it actually is. What are the consequences of hypothermia ?! The consequences range from tension in the back muscles, also popularly known as lumbago, to inflammation of the sciatic nerve and protracted and very painful kidney pelvic inflammation.? Do kidney belts also protect against vibrations ?! No; the kidneys, which are housed in excellent dampening fat pads, do not need such protection at all. However, the compression of the abdominal cavity offers additional protection against damage to internal organs such as the spleen, liver, kidneys and bladder.

The protective one

Among the huge range of kidney belts, safety-conscious pilots will find those that not only keep you warm, but also protect you in the event of an accident. Dainese (phone 089/27370808), for example, closes a gap with the BAP 2000/3 that gapes in many leather and textile suits with built-in but too short back protectors. The price for the BAP 2000/3 is 77 marks.
