Due to the hardly foreseeable further development of the corona pandemic and its effects, BMW will not participate in the two leading motorcycle trade fairs Intermot in Cologne in October and EICMA in Milan in November in 2020. The motorcycle manufacturer announced this on Wednesday (April 1st, 2020) in Munich.

The background to this decision is to counter the current planning uncertainty at an early stage for all partners involved in BMW’s trade fair appearances in the sense of the greatest possible security, predictability and transparency.

In autumn 2020, BMW will present the world premieres and product highlights planned for these trade fairs via alternative platforms. In doing so, there is increasing emphasis on own formats and digital communication channels.

KTM at any fair in 2020

On Thursday (April 2nd), the Austrian motorcycle manufacturer KTM announced that it would not take part in any trade fair in 2020. The cancellation also applies to the Husqvarna subsidiary. This also includes Intermot and EICMA. Due to the global COVID-19 pandemic, you are proactively taking responsibility for the safety of customers and employees, explains KTM. “We are taking this path with great caution and as a company we would be delighted if the trade fair organizers – especially the EICMA trade fair – would consider postponing the trade fair dates to 2021, because we hope and expect that the situation will normalize again by then”, quotes the press release from KTM CMO Hubert Trunkenpolz.

It remains to be seen whether these cancellations by two major industry players will have a signal effect for other manufacturers.

IVM statement on trade fair cancellations

As a co-organizer of Intermot in Cologne, the IVM can understand the decisions made by BMW and KTM to stay away from the autumn trade fairs and thus also from Intermot this year. The IVM now wants to evaluate and analyze the situation together with Koelnmesse and find solutions. The plans for Intermot 2020 are already well advanced. It will not be easy to make decisions.
