How it all started: With a standard Suzuki GSX-S 1000. Technically first class, the naked bike with its superbike genes looks a bit too good. She tries to please as many as possible…

Rest: Which one should it be? In a Facebook vote, the ABS restraint system won by ten votes. Presumably because it offers an additional eccentric adjustment of the footrest position. The LSL system is a little more delicate.

While the assembly of the footrest system is a mere routine matter, dealing with carbon wheels can easily make you nervous – how quickly the rim catches a flaw when assembling tires. Everything worked out here, the bike shines in clear-cut perfection.

Ready for now. Of course, there is still this and that to perfect, such as the chassis and engine electronics. This happens in the second tune-up stage. Until then, we wish you joyful amazement.

This TuneUp aims in a different direction than the previous ones. For now it’s not about using better parts to cut tenths of a second off the lap time. Rather, the goal is the ultimate optical performance.

Build a real show bike in just four weeks? Actually impossible. But we have a drawer in which there are some ideas for project bikes that we have always wanted to build. As luck would have it, one of these drawer plans fits perfectly with the idea of PS, a Suzuki for the Essen Motor Show GSX-S 1000 to re-knit. Supported by a network of project-enthusiastic manufacturers of the finest motorcycle accessories, we face the challenge and tackle the EMS bike.

Courage to make a big entrance, edge, charisma
We’re kids of the eighties and we’re into the early superbikes and the scary power nakeds of that time. The Suzuki Katana was an absolute milestone back then and not only rocked technically, but also shocked optically. “Hate it or love it” was then as it is today and has helped the katana to achieve absolute cult status. Technically, the new Suzuki GSX-S 1000 marks a similar highlight a good 30 years later – a fat superbike engine from the Gixxer, ABS, traction control and much more in a naked bike – that has something.
Visually, however, the Suzuki GSX-S 1000 lacks – in our opinion – the courage to make a grand entrance, the edge, the charisma. This is of course okay for large-scale production and mass compatibility, but we do not have to submit to any of these specifications in this project and can freely manage and design. Anyone who knows our conversion bikes knows that they are not “Everybody’s Darling” and neither do they want to be. They are allowed to divide, hyperspace, but also the people who ride a motorcycle. It is okay for people to turn around at the sight of the bikes and walk away shaking their heads, as long as people are still standing on their knees with pippies in their eyes and saying: “I need something like that, even if my neighbor hates me for it.” We love the katana because it’s cult, and we admire the Suzuki GSX-S 1000 as a base. So the plan is clear – old school meets new technology.
Tsurugi is the counterpart to the katana
There is no project bike without a proper name, and it’s easy to find: Tsurugi. No, this is not about the combination of Triplespeed and Suzuki that resulted from consuming too much barley juice, but rather the result of intensive research. Katana is the single-edged sword in Japanese and is also widely known as a generic term for sword. Tsurugi is the counterpart to the katana, namely the double-edged sword. That fits perfectly, let’s bring the old and the new together here – the two lines of development of our Big Block sword.
The implementation
triplespeed headquarters / Ines Mannl
Jens Hebisch from Triplespeed Headquarters doing the preparatory work.
First of all, there is tinkering with the computer and photoshooting, what the computing power has to offer, in order to see whether the idea has a chance of survival in reality. Because as much as we like bikes that polarize, we should like them ourselves. And it pleases, it works, it stimulates.
The next step is to order an original (!) Suzuki Katana fairing. Yes, that’s how the Japanese are, after more than 30 years you can still order more plastic. Luckily. In addition, the telephone wire is made to glow and the computer keyboard is forcefully driven into the limiter while writing e-mails. Material has to be brought in, and not only within a very short time, but also for a bike that has only recently been on the market. Fortunately, as part of our PS-TuneUps, we can now access a multi-meshed industrial network, made up of companies and people who not only see motorcycles as the basis of their daily business, but also see them as their passion. This makes the impossible possible – because everyone involved gives full throttle.
Rear fairing of an 1100 Gixxer from 1988
Obi, the flex, the file and the marker are what the phone and the computer are to me. Millimeter by millimeter, material is removed, frames are welded and brackets are manufactured. It may seem like craft autism to many, but for Obi, it’s the self-imposed commitment to perfection. After the front has been adjusted, the master two-wheel mechanic and detail fetishist attaches the rear of the Suzuki GSX-S 1000. For this purpose, countless GRP replicas of former Suzuki racing humps are tried out, none of which is awarded the contract. All too bulky, all too misshapen. In the end, fate helps and plays the original rear fairing of an 1100 Gixxer from 1988 into our hands – it fits so perfectly into the overall picture of our Tsurugi, like Kevin Schwantz behind the windshield of his RGV 500. That’s it, it has to be. Two days later that too is done.
Now the overall picture is rounded off. Carbon parts are manufactured, adapted and installed. We are supported by HF Carbon, who offer an incredible portfolio of dark baked goods for almost every common model, also optionally in a matt look. With each of these freshly baked pieces, old school and current technology merge more and the overall picture becomes more coherent. After ten days, the basic concept for the Suzuki GSX-S 1000 Tsurugi finally stands before us in all its glory. Admittedly, still quite colorful, with exposed milled edges and temporary holders, but complete. The grin is broad, the duty done. Now comes the freestyle.
The design
triplespeed headquarters / Ines Mannl
Comic print in high-gloss black with dark gray areas.
First of all, all parts are unscrewed again, loaded and we go to Mainstockheim, the home of Starpaint. Together we are developing a design for the Suzuki GSX-S 1000 Tsurugi that gives the greatest pleasure in monochrome. The guys from Starpaint are the reference in the field of water transfer printing and are also passionate painters. They wrap the Tsurugi dress in high-gloss black piano lacquer, paired with dark gray anthracite surfaces that are provided with an adult comic – applied as a water transfer print. In addition, golden outlines à la John Player Special and yeah, we are permanently flashed.
The comic print gives us a particularly wide grin: a well-formed, lightly clad beauty with a skull in one hand and the swinging Tsurugi sword in the other wraps us around her little finger. You are already looking forward to rainy days when you sit with coffee or beer in the garage at home and enjoy the comic. The prospect of the next regulars’ table meeting is even better if you have to admonish the boys to drool around the bike with an appropriate safety margin.
The parts
Here we start directly with an absolute board, the RBX2 carbon wheel set from Rotobox. Beautifully made in the finest glossy carbon (optionally available in matt) and blessed with the fighting weight of an anorexic carrier pigeon. The fat five-spoke look comes around the corner so old school, as if the noble forge from Slovenia had invented it especially for our ultra-modern retro racer. When ordering, you can also choose the color of the valve, the lettering and the inner part of the rim, and for very creative minds there is the possibility of having your own design applied. We are blown away and doubt for a long time whether we should even incorporate such fine material or give it to the “Museum of Modern Arts”. In the end, however, the greed for driving pleasure wins, and the dark baked goods should increase this again due to the significantly lower rotating and unsprung masses. The works of art are soled with the finest all-terrain sports rubbers from Breuberg. A set of Metzeler M7RRs will provide the Suzuki GSX-S 1000 Tsurugi with secure support in all situations, whether relaxed through the urban night, with steam from the boilers over the house route or, if challenged, on every track on this planet.
We continue one floor higher, on the bridge of the Suzuki GSX-S 1000 Tsurugi. There no part remains on the other. The original handlebar is taken out of service and exchanged for a classy LSL X00 carbon handlebar (optionally also available in matt). A little wider for even better handling and with a look that makes you kneel down, the light part turns us on hard. If you are worried about the stability of the mesh, you can relax and take it courageously, because the X00 is provided with an aluminum core and therefore has an ABE, and rightly so.
Everything is e-approved and legal
When it comes to “Access”, we welcome the Motogadget part on board. The rubber grips are slightly thicker than the original ones on the Suzuki GSX-S 1000 and convey a good grip and cool style. The extremely stylish direction indicators also come from Motogadget. For the front, the m-Blaze discs on the handlebars show the way, while the spacey m-Blaze Ice at the rear. They are painted in black chrome and go with the Tsurugi like black lace with a well-formed Latina. At the same time, the parts are still brake and taillights. Everything is E-approved and “street legal”.
And already he twitches again, the want-I, no MUST-I-have reflex: The HC3 brake and clutch pump from Magura enter the project bike stage and pull us completely under their spell. Of course, they cost real money and with regard to the clutch pump one would have to say that the cable worked too. But the sensible cells under the skull have long since been gagged and tied up in the same dark broom closet as the synapses that wanted to rise to the position of savings commissioner. Nah, we’re having fun now. And this is ensured by the CNC-milled aluminum housing, the three-way adjustable lever bearing point, the folding lever function, the remote adjuster for the brake lever and a pressure point, like on a PS4 joypad. This is also significantly reinforced by the new brake line steel braided kit from ABM.
The engine is optically inflated
As for the storage tanks for the brake and clutch fluid, we call our design-loving friends in Italy to order the full load of Rizoma-Style. The containers of the Wave series are unrivaled noble and in connection with the in-house holders are small works of art that one always likes to see. The Elisse mirrors also come from Rizoma, an absolute classic in terms of form and function. All done here. We quickly take a look at the beautifully painted tank and enjoy the new cap from Italy – this makes refueling fun.
Off to the engine, which due to its proven potency remains technically untouched, but optically appears pumped up by at least 500 cubic meters. This is not due to anabolic steroids containing octane, but above all to the now bold series manifold, which has been refined by powder coating North in the finest black velvet. The guys from the north are the number one when it comes to ceramic coating and, with their Cerakote process, not only offer the opportunity to catch up with the protective shield of a space shuttle in terms of heat resistance, but also offer free color design of the manifold network – a huge coating cinema. The entire range of aluminum screws in the finest black from Lightech is responsible for the bold style. Very cool, as the Italians offer ready-made screw kits for the engine, frame and fairing, and that in different colors. Aesthetes, that’s why we take the oil filler neck and the TuneUp-ennobled license plate holder from the same company. The Italians offer significantly more fine material for the Suzuki GSX-S 1000 and should be visited once online by anyone who is willing to convert.
So that the noble screws and the engine block that they hold together adorn the home garage or the show stage for a long time without scratches, we still mount the engine protection blocks from GSG – massive, but quite inconspicuous, they are a useful tool on the big block of the Suzuki GSX-S 1000 Add on.
Facebook community decided on rest
We continue towards the rear wheel, and here the black and gold overall picture is rounded off with milled material from Gilles Tooling. The CNC-milled chain tensioners AXB are available in different colors and just damn beautiful. It goes without saying that in the future the disdainful series chain will not be allowed to rotate around it, and so the simple drive train gives way to a high-quality ZRP chain from Regina – in gold, of course. In order not to shred any ugly flaws in the swing arm when jacking up, we also mount the TuneUp-tested stand mounts from LSL with a large plate to protect the material.
Finished? Nothing. We still have the rest theme and here two top running board variants at the start. On the one hand the system from ABM, on the other hand the extremely appealing one from LSL. Both are CNC-milled, have a parts certificate for registration and offer a sporty seating position. The ABM system can also be adjusted within a certain radius of the notch. So which one should it be? We are undecided and let the PS Facebook community decide. Here, too, it can be seen that both products meet at eye level. At the end of the voting, the ABM system wins by just ten votes and thus makes its way to the project bike. The LSL is definitely a worthy alternative.
Remus or Akrapovic?
triplespeed headquarters / Ines Mannl
The PS Facebook community opted for the featherweight Akrapovic muffler. However, the spectacular shape and high black content speak for the Remus damper.
And another vote is on the project plan. It’s about the sound system, and here the titanium slip-on from Akrapovic competes against the beautiful black stainless steel muffler from Remus. Both pots have stylish carbon end caps and are of extremely high quality. ABE is included, and both supply covers for the front silencer. With Remus this comes from black steel, whereas Akrapovic uses light carbon here. But the part of the Austrians shines with its distinctive “Hypercone Shape”. Although the vote ends in favor of the favorite from Slovenia, we are sure that the Remus part will also find a home on many Suzuki GSX-S 1000s. We assemble the Akrapovic and let the monster roar.
Almost finished. That leaves the face, and that’s sacred to us, because it’s the trademark of a bike after all. Here we are pulling another really compact style out of the lucky bag. The katana was considered extravagant at the time. This predicate will be valid again at the latest when you look in the face of the Suzuki GSX-S 1000 Tsurugi. Two supernova bright LED headlights from 4X LED turn night into day and the flasher switch requires a gun license. A Rollei Actioncam 420 sits enthroned between the two light sources to document the ride towards the apocalypse, sound barrier or time jump in 4K. That is literally great cinema – stylistically on the bike and later on the flat at home for home route analysis. Finally, a self-made windshield in the style of a Starfighter pilot’s cockpit on top and that’s it. We rummage in the clothes closet for Maverick’s aviator helmet.
Continuation with chassis, electronics and automatic switch
Now it should be good for now. There are still some open points on our wish list, such as the chassis, the engine electronics including the automatic gearshift, and one or two technical goodies. We are in the best of things to have processed these details by the first driving report. We will be able to offer you these in the next issue, but now it is time to set the stage for the rebirth of a legend, the return of the katana, the appearance of the PS Triple Speed Tsurugi. Love it or hate it.
