The Dakar Rally has its roots in Africa. In 1978 the first edition started in Paris with the goal in Dakar, the capital of Senegal. After numerous terrorist attacks and threats, including against the Dakar itself, the French organizer Amaury Sport Organization (A.S.O.) changed continent for the 2009 Dakar. The rally entourage moved from Africa to South America. After more and more South American countries canceled their participation in the Dakar due to cost reasons, the 2019 rally took place exclusively in one country (Peru) for the first time. Before the next time, it’s time to reorient again. Accordingly, A.S.O. a possible return to Africa.

A move to Saudi Arabia has now been confirmed. According to media reports, A.S.O. entered into a five-year contract with the kingdom. The country pays up to $ 15 million in entry fees. The 2020 edition of the Dakar will be limited exclusively to Saudi Arabia. In the following years, the rally could then be extended to neighboring countries such as Oman, Egypt or Jordan. With an area of around 2.15 million square kilometers and mountains up to 3,000 meters high and temperatures from below zero to 30 degrees in January, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia offers enough space and extremes for a Dakar.
The start of the Dakar 2020 will take place on January 5th in the very west of Saudi Arabia in Jeddah, directly on the Red Sea. Then it goes in twelve stages and one rest day in Riyadh (January 11th) through the Asir Mountains and the desert criss-crossing Saudi Arabia. The destination is in Al Qiddiya – an artificially created amusement park around 40 kilometers south of the capital Riyadh – and will be reached on January 17th. The total route will be around 9,000 kilometers. A.S.O. get in now.
