After years of KTM dominance, Honda clinched victory in the 2020 edition of the Dakar Rally eight years after the Japanese brand’s Dakar comeback.

The American Ricky Brabec was able to take the overall victory for the Japanese. The 28-year-old Californian clinched victory for the Honda team for the first time in over 30 years on a CRF450 rally. The last overall Honda victory was in 1989. With Brabec, who clinched two stage victories on the Dakar, an American motorcycle rider also dominated for the first time. It was Brabec’s fifth participation in the Dakar.

Brabec finished the Dakar in 40 hours, two minutes and 36 seconds. He secured victory with a lead of 16 minutes and 26 seconds over Husqvarna driver Pablo Quintanilla, who finished second. The first KTM with driver Toby Price and almost 24 minutes behind is only in third place overall. KTM has won the Dakar Rally without a break since 2001 – until now. Fourth was the second Honda driver Jose Ignacio Cornejo.

Brabec’s win represents Honda’s sixth overall Dakar win. The five previous victories were all long ago and were all won in Africa. Ciryl Neveu won in 1982, 1986 and 1987). Edi Orioli took victory for Honda in 1988. Gilles Lalay clinched the last Dakar victory for the Japanese in 1989. After 23 years of abstinence, Honda did not return to the Dakar until 2013 at the factory. In the past eight years, Honda achieved only two podium finishes with Paulo Gonçalves (2015) and Kevin Benavides (2018).
