Driving report Bimota mantra
Climax
So far, Bimota has not really been trusted – in the face of the super monsters YB6 or SB 6, which used to kill sensuality with sheer motor power. But a mystical formula to conjure up customers – combined with a radical change in the previous model policy – seemed to Bimota to be appropriate in the light of a changed zeitgeist and tighter budgets.
So the Bimota Mantra finally found its way out of the exhibition halls of the world, where it had tested the reactions of customers as a design study last year, into the assembly hall in Rimini. It wants to show that a Bimota can do more than just drive straight ahead with 280 things – namely, that it is fun.
As usual, the engine of the Mantra is a third-party product, here from the Ducati 900 Monster. The Riminese surrounded this almost 80 hp two-cylinder heart with a lattice frame made of oval aluminum tubes that were welded to form triangular assemblies.
Bimota attached great importance to the shortest possible wheelbase: At 1375 mm, it is a full 55 mm shorter than on Ducati’s Monster.
When fully fueled, the pleasure object, which weighs only around 190 kilograms, ends up in a corner due to the shape of the carbon-based paneling and the 2-in-4 exhaust system, where you might suspect the Terminator or Mad Max. In fact, the mantra’s pegs, seat and handlebars offer a fun bike-like driving experience for the first time on a Bimota. Rapid lean changes are the world of the mantra driver, and bad asphalt and winding country roads are ridden down in a supermoto style.
The Bimota Matra therefore represents an evolutionary advance for the manufacturer "form follows function" the extreme sports bimota sets the pleasure principle for the first time "fun follows function" opposite. And if that’s not fun …
